Attending BLM protests?

ALifeDesign · 06/06/2020 14:28

I am wondering if anyone has attended today or planning to go to any of the protests being organised around the country this weekend.

I am debating going tomorrow. I would maintain social distancing and wear a mask. In ordinary times I would be there without a second's thought but these aren't ordinary times.

Some photos from today on Twitter look well organised, distanced etc.

I wfh and live with one other person - currently furloughed - who would also be at the protest, so I feel we are low risk of spreading.

I'm still a bit torn. So I suppose AIBU to attend?

I hope every one of those police officers is blaming the cunt Chauvain who started all this by murdering a poor black man in cold blood in broad daylight where nobody could do anything to help (him and his comrades) and NOT the protestors who are rightly infuriated.

Flutteryb · 06/06/2020 18:24

Where were the thousands who crammed in together for VE day? Or are they on about people who sat in their front gardens? The mind fucking boggles.

Tianalia · 06/06/2020 18:24

Lives in Britain are not more at risk from racism than covid. In fact black lives are more at risk from Covid.

This.

Yes they seem to be taking about a few people Standing a bit too close together by their driveways and comparing it to thousands crammed together.

GimmeAy · 06/06/2020 18:26

Depends on what segment of BAME society you look at.

ConkerGame · 06/06/2020 18:30

@Tianalia I live in a predominantly black area and I can think of many black teenagers who would strongly disagree with you. Especially when you take into account the general trouble in their lives as well as risk of death

Smileyaxolotl1 · 06/06/2020 18:31

conkergame
Black teenagers are significantly more likely to be killed by other black teenagers than by white teenagers or police though.

QueenofmyPrinces · 06/06/2020 18:31

I feel embarrassed for our Country to be honest

I take it you're white?

Yes I am.

Would I be allowed to be embarrassed if I was black?

Tianalia · 06/06/2020 18:33

Conkergame the teens in your area may strongly disagree with me but it doesn't mean they are right.

Smileyaxolotl1 · 06/06/2020 18:36

tianalia
To be fair, they probably are right.
The risk of covid for a teenager is almost nil.
However the risk of them spreading is to an older family member is not negligible.

Well that's okay then. Give the police a pass, I mean - they only kill some unarmed black people...🙄

Flutteryb · 06/06/2020 18:37

Yep. There are plenty of ways people can support and push for actual change, what are the real aims of these? To bring it to people's attention, yep, they are listening. Now what actual actions need to happen, and how will these help that?

Tianalia · 06/06/2020 18:39

Fair point about teen risk. Although it's not just teenagers out there either.

atilathehut · 06/06/2020 18:42

Gimme - please elaborate because I can't find any stats that back up that white people kill black people in the U.K. in great numbers. Even the police stats show proportionately you ware more likely to die in custody if white but I am prepared to listen if I am wrong

RainbowGlittersandSparkles · 06/06/2020 18:44

No excuse for me @Crunchymum I don’t want to...oh and there’s this thing called a pandemic going on and we’re supposed to be social distancing.

ConkerGame · 06/06/2020 18:48

@Smileyaxolotl1 I don’t know if that’s true - do you have a source?

And if you’re talking about gang-related deaths - gangs are a direct result of systemic racism: lack of opportunity for black youth and underprivileged communities

GimmeAy · 06/06/2020 18:49

I'm white and I wasn't aware of the protest (have been avoiding media recently) or I would have gone. I'm white (not British).
If I was a young black person, hell or high water (as it has happened) wouldn't have kept me away.
Change only happens when people revolt en masse. Yes, it's fucking unfortunate timing, but this is an important issue that has been brewing worldwide among oppreI of it and we take a long hard look at ourselves. A really long hard look. What part am I playing in these people feeling so victimised? What part are you playing? Can you think for long enough to put yourself in someone else's shoes?
I'm Irish, so not immune to racism and oppression and discrimination and everything else that goes with it. So I probably am slightly more capable of understanding their point of view. That the whole world feels the need to protest should say something to you, to me, shouldn't it? Things need to change. The time has come.

GimmeAy · 06/06/2020 18:50

That's probably the Irish/Polish lol.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 06/06/2020 18:50

The protests are well-warranted and I support the cause, but the timing could not be worse

Exactly my position - though as said, it could be a handy indicator as to what's still necessary precaution-wise if we don't see a spike among the protesters

Remember we were told there'd be hell and disaster after the VE Day parties and that didn't happen either

Bargainhuntbore · 06/06/2020 18:51

I have no interest in attending any kind of protest. Lockdown or not. And people have forgotten that we are still in lockdown

GimmeAy · 06/06/2020 18:52

has been brewing worldwide among oppreI of it
What?
has been brewing worldwide among oppressed people and people are sick of it...

summerfruitssquash · 06/06/2020 18:54

I will not be attending because there is a fucking PANDEMIC everyone has forgotten about.
And given that BAME are more vulnerable to COVID it makes no fucking sense to me to do anything outside the guidelines.
Virtually yes!!! But fucking hell coronavirus hasn’t gone to make room for protests!!

GimmeAy · 06/06/2020 18:55

Nice view from up there in your ivory tower?

To everyone who keeps saying it's just the poor timing...do you realise how insulting that is? Oh come on, can't you just deal with systemic racism for a while longer? I know you're being oppressed because of the colour of your skin, but it's a bit inconvenient for me right now...
