Attending BLM protests?

ALifeDesign · 06/06/2020 14:28

I am wondering if anyone has attended today or planning to go to any of the protests being organised around the country this weekend.

I am debating going tomorrow. I would maintain social distancing and wear a mask. In ordinary times I would be there without a second's thought but these aren't ordinary times.

Some photos from today on Twitter look well organised, distanced etc.

I wfh and live with one other person - currently furloughed - who would also be at the protest, so I feel we are low risk of spreading.

I'm still a bit torn. So I suppose AIBU to attend?

It's not ironic. It's very self aware. Do you think that all those young black men at the protests aren't aware that they are likely to be targeted by the police if anything happens? They're very aware, but they're still taking the risk because it's too important.

People are very aware of the dangers of spreading the virus, but have taken a calculated risk because lives are more at risk from racism. As I say, mostly young people wearing masks.

I've just watched the news and was amazed and worried about the size of huge crowds in London and Manchester with no social distancing, and not many masks.
Congregating in large crowds is one of the last things that is likely to be reinstated as lockdown eases because if the risk of transition. And crowds in big cities will have put pressure on police and public transport.
I didnt go because it us not the only way to support BLM.

Everyone in my area who went to the Local protests has been advised to quarantine for 14 days because there are now confirmed Covid cases among those who attended the local event

Good luck with that; if they're not prepared to follow guidance to stay away from mass events, they're hardly likely to follow quarantine requirements either ... especially if another protest calls

Absolute madness makes a total mockery of all the sacrifice people have made since lockdown

atilathehut · 06/06/2020 18:08

This is ridiculous I've spend 11 weeks not going out to try not to spread or catch a virus, and now thousands are meetjng en masse. The virus hasn't gone away

GimmeAy · 06/06/2020 18:12

Outside Whitehall is pure mayhem right now.

atilathehut · 06/06/2020 18:12

Lives in Britain are not more at risk from racism than covid. In fact black lives are more at risk from Covid. Let's not be silly

AKissAndASmile · 06/06/2020 18:13

The Australian protests probably had the biggest crowds I've ever seen

I’m watching it on Sky News and seeing how out of hand it’s getting.

I feel embarrassed for our Country to be honest.

Obviously. It’s a public health disaster. The protests are well-warranted and I support the cause, but the timing could not be worse. I do fear that this is going to make the Pandemic situation even harder for minority and low-income communities.

recycledteenager24 · 06/06/2020 18:17

no way would i be going, it won't achieve anything and i being vunerable i value what reasonable health i have.
but everyone else feel free to spread the virus. as for social distancing at a protest with potentially 10's of 1000s ? you will, if you say so.

ConkerGame · 06/06/2020 18:17

I went to a big one today and it was fine. Everyone I saw was wearing a mask, lots of people also had gloves. I just stayed near the back where it wasn’t so crowded and always had space around me. Nobody touched me or breathed in my face or anything. If I was in any higher risk category due to pregnancy, age, health conditions etc then I wouldn’t have gone.

I don’t think anyone should be judged for going or not going, it completely depends on personal circumstances and both COVID and BLM are obviously hugely important issues.

GimmeAy · 06/06/2020 18:17

I take it you're white?

Livingoffcoffee · 06/06/2020 18:19

In fact black lives are more at risk from Covid.

Yes...because of systemic racism...

Everyone keeps spurting out the fact that the BAME community is more at risk from covid. Have any of you thought about why that actually is?

Those attending the protests are assessing the risks and making a decision for themselves. The same way I keep seeing people that it's okay to take your newborn to meet their grandparents if you've been following the advice till now. Why's that any different? (I know why...but no one will admit it)

GimmeAy · 06/06/2020 18:19

Poor horses!

Smileyaxolotl1 · 06/06/2020 18:20

conkergame
Why shouldn’t they be judged for completely ignoring lockdown rules? And risking thousands of lives in the process.

ConkerGame · 06/06/2020 18:21

Also white people who are condemning the protests without doing anything else tangible to support the BLM movement - check your privilege. Lucky you that you and your loved ones are not at risk of death at the hands of police due to the colour of your skin and therefore don’t feel the desperate need to do something visible.

(I’m white BTW)

AKissAndASmile · 06/06/2020 18:21

THIS

recycledteenager24 · 06/06/2020 18:21

doesn't matter what colour queen she's entitled to her opinion just like you are gimme there's no need to be so pa.

ConkerGame · 06/06/2020 18:22

@Smileyaxolotl1 for many people racism has a much worse impact on their lives than COVID. If we didn’t want people to protest during a global pandemic then shame on us for not stopping racism before said pandemic arrived!

Smileyaxolotl1 · 06/06/2020 18:22

livingofcoffee complete rubbish.
It’s different because one is a small group and one is thousands of people together.
That’s the reason not manufactured bollocks to prove your nonexistent point.
