To tell my neighbours not to smoke under my window

Just that really, the place stinks. They do it all the time 😩

Cabinfever10 · 05/06/2020 21:33

Whose garden are they in?

PissedOff27 · 05/06/2020 21:37

@Cabinfever10 they are in their own it's just they always smoke as close to my young daughter's bedroom as possible and room, and the rest of the house just fecking stinks.

Any advice or do I just put it up with it?

I wouldnt 'tell' them as that may just get their backs up. I'd just go round and nicely ask if they would mind moving further down the garden to smoke as especially with the windows open atm the smell is coming into your home, particularly dd room.

DDiva · 05/06/2020 21:48

Yes just ask them to move further down the garden....

PissedOff27 · 05/06/2020 21:48

@Parmavioletmum sorry 'tell' was wrong the word. I would ask politely and I have done so before, to which they say 'of course' and do it anyway.

PissedOff27 · 05/06/2020 21:49

@DDiva how would you ask them, though when I've asked nicely before they just have carried on 😩

TazSyd · 05/06/2020 21:54

You can ask them nicely again. I don’t think you can do anything about it if they won’t do it though. Smoking is legal and they are on their own property.

It’s annoying, I used to live in a flat and downstairs used to smoke on their balcony, which was directly under mine. I’d be sitting out there reading and wafts if smoke would come up. If I left the sliding doors open, the smell would come in to my flat.

TazSyd · 05/06/2020 21:55

Could you swap bedrooms around, so that your DD isn’t breathing in the smoke?

Lollypop4 · 05/06/2020 21:59

Ask again , If they dont maybe Local Enviromental health can advice, is it a council property, rented or owned?
If the former 2, you can approach the council and maybe private landlord, if you really get nowhere

Milkshake54 · 05/06/2020 22:03

I’d ask. I used to live in a semi-detached house and our bedroom was next to their bedroom. They smoked in it and the smell would weep into our room!
Unfortunately we didn’t have a good relationship with them, so if I had asked them to stop, they probably would have done it more to piss us off... was horrible though!

fairislecable · 05/06/2020 22:43

Get a fan and position it near to the window so that the smoke is blown away from your room.

If you can get a powerful one they might find it uncomfortable to smoke near to your property.

TazSyd · 05/06/2020 22:56

Through open windows, or did it come through the walls?

PissedOff27 · 05/06/2020 23:05

@TazSyd the rooms are next door to each other, moving furniture is not an easy task, one I couldn't do on my own. This is why I can't stand smokers, don't give a toss that they are impacting on someone else's life! I have bought her in with me for this evening but my room reeks too.

PissedOff27 · 05/06/2020 23:07

@TazSyd I remember this well, up until a few months ago I lived above smokers. Just not nice with a young child. I had the flat when I was pregnant and my daughter was newborn so that was worse... I had hoped my neighbours wouldn't be smokers 😩

@fairislecable there is one!

Try living in a building full of the stench of weed and the housing officer refuses to do anything.

I'd rather take someone smoking normal fags under a window

DipseeDaisey · 05/06/2020 23:27

I hate the smell of smoke too, I don't know what the answer is but i don't feel moving your child's room is or should be the solution. First of all ask them nicely and see what they say, they may genuinely not realise that it is going in through the window, If that doesn't work, maybe get a recording of a baby crying and leave it playing full blast by the window, it might put them off Smile

TazSyd · 05/06/2020 23:44

I like the idea of getting a really strong fan and blowing the smoke back at them (after you’ve politely asked them to stop). Especially if you put the fan on full blast and aim it at them, every time they light up.

Could you tell a white lie and say your child has asthma and the smoke is really affecting her. You’re worried about her health, maybe cry a little?

TazSyd · 05/06/2020 23:59

These are quite expensive and you would need to do some research into which ones are best. Maybe worth reading up on them and seeing if it’s worth the cost. It’s shit because, as far as I’m aware, they aren’t breaking any law.

Air purifier, 30 quid Amazon. True hepa filter. A ++ energy rating.

Felifox · 06/06/2020 00:05

Smoking wasn't permitted at work outside the doors or windows of the buildings, this was the case before the smoking ban. Could you try putting a smoke alarm by the window, there are small ones you could place on the window sill?

FloutMyArse · 06/06/2020 00:18

What about offering to buy them a reasonably nice bench for their garden if they’d agree to base their smoking station there? ;)

Kaathesnake · 06/06/2020 00:32

Try a fan by the window, pointing out? That might waft the smoke away before it gets in? You can get small ones for around a tenner? Argos, Amazon etc
