@GrandTheftWalrus good for you, I'd rather none of them.

@TazSyd if we’re being realistic a fan would do noting but increase the OP’s electric bill 😂

I would swap bedrooms based on the drawing, they are in their garden, so can’t prevent them smoking there. Once the weather goes bad you won’t notice it anyhow

You could try putting a fowl ameelling plant in your garden at that end.... To deter them to smoke elsewhere.

Report
Milkshake54 · 06/06/2020 08:08

@TazSyd it was through the walls unfortunately 😢. Much worse when the windows were closed! We just kept the windows open throughout the year and it diluted it. When we would walk in, the smell would be more concentrated, but I guess we got used to it.

Obviouspretzel · 06/06/2020 08:14

Why would you solve the issue by putting a foul smelling plant in your own garden 😂?

OP - you have my sympathy and you are not being unreasonable.

On holiday once, our room was 4 floors up, above where the smokers tended to congregate. The smoke came into our (non smoking) room. We moved rooms.

OP you have my sympathies. My downstairs neighbours smoke just outside their back door which is right under my kitchen window, or outside the front under my lounge. They smoke outside to stop their flat stinking, and instead mine does! I have kids, plus frequent migraines with nausea so the faintest whiff can set me off.
I've explained it to them and asked them to be a bit more considerate but they couldn't care less.

Am frequently reminded of the line from the IT Crowd.....

"People.....what a bunch of bastards...."

Are you in the UK?

Outside smoking, in this wind and rain and you’re bedroom and you’re child’s bedroom “reeks”. Ok Hmm

I really feel fo you, just one whiff of cigarette smoke makes me feels sick, so if they're doing it a lot it must be awful. I would ask them politely to stop based on your daughter's health, then if they carry on pop your head out every single time they light up and remind them. If I was them I'd put a little smoking hut at the end of the garden for bad weather - presumably they're near the house for shelter.

I think a lot of people don’t think about wind direction, it isn’t case of smoking in x area, it’s about moving to where the wind won’t carry it in certain directions.

If there is no wind or its an easterly wind I smoke on my balcony as it stops it going in my flat or the flats in our block (upstairs is empty). If it’s in another direction I go outside and stand where the wind will carry it away from the building. It really isn’t difficult.

Op I had this for three years with the most selfish stream of bastards I've ever come across.

We tried everything... Kindness, beer for smoking slightly away as a thank you..
Appealed to their better nature... I looked into it with smoke charity and air will be filled with thousands of smoke particles.

I would definitely get air purifier.

Ask them again and say your daughter is suffering and yes absolutely tell white lie and say she's coughing etc or asthmatic.

You don't smoke why the hell should your dd have to breathe in other people's bloody smoke or you Shock

If they don't then I would start to fight back.
Ask docs for a letter as well on smoke impact. Contact one of the charities... Get stats on impact on children.

Go to eh at council...

We have large groups of men doing it crammed into unofficial HMO so for me it was suddenly after considerate neighbours who smoked but maybe 1 at a time and wandering up and down garden to 10 or more all chatting under window.

Look at other avenues too...

Put loads of bird feeders on a pole on your side in front of dds room then the smelly bastards will get shat on.
Fucking inconsiderate 💐

Sheldon same, smoke can give me a migraine and yes it's absurd they have the cheek to keep their own environment clear and pollute ours.
I stopped smoking for my dc.. I'm not having serval times a day smoke affecting them!

Actually that's an excellent idea!!

Create a problem they want you to resolve, but.. Bird feeder etc is so innocent!!

Doesn't seem like obvious retaliation and then.... You have something to negotiate with... I think that's brilliant idea!!!

I would close DDs window and put a fan in there if it gets too hot. Much better than sticking the fan out the window.

I don't think There's much you can do if they are on their own property unfortunately

@Milkshake54

Just wondering, as it seemed to seep into my flat, even with the windows closed. I couldn’t figure out how, as they were new build flats with no fireplaces etc. I’m guessing there must have been some ventilation built into the flooring, or something and that was letting it in.

@PissedOff27 calling me a cunt? Aren't you a delight.. No, I have children and I don't smoke. I just have an aversion to complete drama queen's.

Your attitude to people who disagree with you says it all. As a pp pointed out, in this weather, I find it highly unlikely that its that bad you have to decamp and your whole house is stinking. Your windows wouldn't even be open on this weather!

@Swiftsseason

Aren’t HMOs supposed to have licences now? Plus different tax regs. You could report to both HMRC and the council.
