Sexism , what would you have done?

I did some volunteering on Monday which involved a food distribution scheme visiting an estate. My role was helping out generally.

There is an older guy there....very involved with the estate and funding. I arrived and said I was a volunteer and who should I report to. Response was " jokey " comment, very slightly mocking. Bit of small talk amongst the volunteers asking where each other lives. He says " if that was a bloke they'd say I live between the Dog and Gun and the Queen Vic". Slightly cringy because I enjoy the pub too!
Further comments about his wife spending all their cash....blah blah, the usual sexist nonsense.
I withdrew into myself and hardly engaged. Is this objectionable behaviour or just regular banter?

Annoying everyday sexism, but I'd give it a bit longer before deciding how to handle it, because presumably you don't know anyone there? If you're going to be there regularly you'll find out who your allies are and if he's always this tedious - and if there's worse to come or that's as bad as it gets. If you're not going back I doubt it was worth saying anything.

He is always this tedious, I have observed. i suppose I question how this is acceptable and how weak I am for instantly shrinking into myself. That's how it continues isn't it?

It’s all a bit vague. What was this ‘jokey, very slightly mocking’ reply? I don’t really see how we’re supposed to judge if you should have been annoyed or not - but to be honest it doesn’t sound particularly earth-shattering.

randomer · 04/06/2020 19:48

It most certainly wasn't earth shattering and is of little importance in the grand scheme of things.

It made me wonder about why I am so feeble. I could have said something but I never would.

Perhaps you're a little shy.

comedycentral · 04/06/2020 21:52

Is he a volunteer too?

MereDintofPandiculation · 04/06/2020 22:40

Pretty standard everyday sexism, along with comments like "I've been given a day pass". If you tackle it now, you'll be disregarded as a joyless "women's libber", wait till you're known and respected.
