I'm so sick of repeating myself today.
AIBU or is ignorance just bliss?

"So OP, lemme get this straight are you saying that "all white people have never experienced racism"

Yes. That's right

redbigbananafeet · 04/06/2020 00:58

And your second link (most recent reply) doesn't work do you're still at one source.

Porcupineinwaiting · 04/06/2020 00:59

I understand the difference between racism and racial prejudice OP it's the difference between anti-semitism and racism I'm not understanding. I am pretty sure it is possible to be a white Jew and to be persecuted for your race, if not the colour of your skin. And the same for the Roma.

Teensandfuture · 04/06/2020 00:59

Ygritt
It is not op's job to educate the population. Population should be educated on the subject already. The fact that people question what op means shows they have never experienced racism and have no qlue.
Go educate yourself online.

LisaLops · 04/06/2020 00:59

Prejudice = Believing preconceptions about race or religion. Having an opinion based on said preconceptions.
Racism = a belief that one race is superior to another or are less equal.

PatricksRum · 04/06/2020 01:00

@redbigbananafeet White slave masters took us from Africa and enslaved us. Even where white people are not the ethnic majority you are still in a position of power.

You don't have to fear being shot at for your skin colour, being stopped and searched for your skin colour, being pulled over for your skin colour.

You are in a powerful position.

The same way men are compared to women.

You're white. You haven't experienced racism

I'm educated thanks just not sure what the point of this thread is. Is it just a rant?

ItsInTheShed · 04/06/2020 01:00

Maybe I haven’t experienced racism but I refuse to feel guilty for being white

SharonasCorona · 04/06/2020 01:00

You're white. You haven't experienced racism

Yes. I'm an Asian immigrant and I don't care about my own experiences in the current climate. Nothing I've experienced can compare with what's happening to black people today.

Let's set aside 'I've experienced racism too' and just focus on the calamity facing black people.

ItsInTheShed · 04/06/2020 01:01

@YgritteSnow I’m not sure either

KingSheathBelle · 04/06/2020 01:01

@AvranaKernsBestSpider

To the person experiencing it, it is what is TO THEM.

You are not the judge.

NameChange2PostThis · 04/06/2020 01:02

I get it
It’s the same as men having not experienced misogyny- even if some men have faced sexism sometimes. It’s about cultural power within a system rather than individual experience.

I hope you find some peace, OP.

Coyoacan · 04/06/2020 01:02

Shame you aren't up for the discussion OP. It could have been interesting.

I don't blame anyone for rioting, it's quite a natural reaction under the circumstances. But we could have an interesting discussion about the chances of riots achieving anything worthwhile.

PatricksRum · 04/06/2020 01:02

@7Days No I totally agree with you. They still experience it.
I guess my point was they are not at the top of the hierarchy and so, the power element wouldn't be added therefore they could show prejudice but not racism.

Avran Spat on, groped, sexually assaulted, called a whore, threatened with rape, called fat white, charged different prices, been followed by groups of men, been spat on and shouted at by groups of women, had police refuse to take statements and physically remove me from police stations. That's off the top of my head.

rosiejaune · 04/06/2020 01:04

The OP's point is that racism is a form of systemic discrimination (like sexism and the other types) that affects members of the social minority.
I.e. anyone who isn't white, and in combination with colorism, the darker your skin tone, the worse it can be. Which is one reason (though not the only one) black people are at particular risk.

If you are a member of the social majority (i.e. white), which is not the same thing as the numerical majority (there are more people of colour than white people in the world, but they still don't hold the social power, as a group), then you may experience racial bigotry from individuals of other races, but you are not a victim of racism. Because it is still your racial group who has always held the social power in the world, and oppressed others via that lens.

To draw parallels with sexism, a man calling a woman a cunt, is worse than a woman calling a man a dick. They are both sex-based insults potentially based in that person's bigotry, but only one is systemically sexist, because men hold the social power.

@YgritteSnow

"I'm educated thanks just not sure what the point of this thread is. Is it just a rant?"

Yet you typed this...on this thread Confused what exactly are you "educated" in?

TakeMeToTheDarkSideOfTheMoon · 04/06/2020 01:05

I beg to differ... I was racially harassed by someone who basically said that I was scum because I had "raw skin"(pale) white women are go's and non whites are superior which is why white people try to bring them down. I went through hell living at that hostel being bullied because I was white, being called racial slurs and saying white people should die. Please don't tell me that because I'm white I haven't experienced racism. I haven't experienced it as much as a black person and my skin colour hasn't had a negative affect for me other than that but it's still racism.

And I do believe Black Lives Matter by the way, but saying other people can experience racism doesn't take that away. It just creates more separation and tension. Let's focus on the current issue rather than excuse a whole race of not experiencing racism.

PatricksRum · 04/06/2020 01:05

@Mybrowneyedgal I had a cuppa, I'm better now Wink
Apologies I don't usually conduct myself in such a way.
All day I have people saying to me, "you're oppressing yourselves. You are racist. We aren't racist. We aren't privileged" and it got me.
Calm and collected!

To expand on my previous post...

Yes white peoples can and do experience racism however now is not the time for them to bring it up, especially not, as you say, in response to black people sharing their stories of experiencing racism.

The movement right now is about systematic entrenched racism in the west, something white people have never experienced.

Them responding to the current movement by piping up with 'ooh I've experienced racism too, some black man shoved me and called me a white cunt' is not necessary right now. Individual racism is entirely different to systematic racism in which a country essentially condones the killing of one race by not prosecuting those who do the killing to the full extent of the law.

CandyLeBonBon · 04/06/2020 01:06

Bloody hell op that's a tough pill to swallow no wonder it wound you up.
