I'm so sick of repeating myself today.
AIBU or is ignorance just bliss?

The only way racism will be challenged is if white people accept they are responsible for it and stand up and challenge it on a daily basis.

What the actual fuck?

SharonasCorona · 04/06/2020 08:23

@BovaryX

It's actually the opposite, you don't get it. The point isn't even nuanced, you just don't want to get it.

TheFencePainter · 04/06/2020 08:24

I'm surprised because I can easily prevent myself from rabbiting on about my own experiences as an Asian immigrant. Today, I simply don't care what Asians/white/Jewish/Chinese etc people are 'suffering'. Today, it's about the people suffering the most.

If the thread read "Asians cannot experience racism" there would be Asians, possibly including you, saying that yes you can. Because you can. This was aimed at white people. That's why white people put their experiences forward. Anyone can experience racism. But no one is denying that it is worst for black people.

If OP didn't want others to share she could have started a thread completely differently. For example by saying "I am tired of explaining how differently racism affects black people. Can black people put their experiences here so others can see and understand" then there should absolutely be no one else talking about their experience. Now THAT would be whataboutery if they did jump in.

Pinkyyy · 04/06/2020 08:24

I'm sorry I haven't read past the first few posts because I'm utterly disgusted in this thread.

OP are you really trying to say that only black people face racism? Don't be so stupid.

Have you ever been denied entry into a restaurant because you're black?

Have you ever been turned away from a soft play with your children because you're black?

I have and I'm white. I don't think you realise how hard travellers have it. Racism towards black people is nothing to what we face every single day.

SuckingDieselFella · 04/06/2020 08:24

@SoupDragon

How can a white working class person have more privilege than a black middle class person?

That is not what the quote said at all Confused

Go on then, explain it to us.

How do you audit people for the amount of privilege they have?

randomchatter · 04/06/2020 08:24

"I'm white and I have experienced racism".

and

"...I know of a white girl who experienced the most blatant racism.."

Why do we do this when debating someone else's experience of racism, especially an incident that's so brutal, blatant and egregious?

Is it designed to shut them up or the equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears?

If you can't even empathise with this thing that's happened, say out loud or quietly to yourself, that it's an inhuman level of violence, a brutality that should end, rather than dismissing it with 'I'm white and...' then your thinking is off track or you lack the very basic intelligence to debate the topic.

ScarletFever · 04/06/2020 08:25

@PatricksRum

That's racial prejudice. Not racism.
What is the difference?
SharonasCorona · 04/06/2020 08:25

@TheFencePainter

OP wasn't inviting white people to post their own experiences on 'racism'. You know this.

Widowodiw · 04/06/2020 08:26

No I haven’t .
But people who are dissing white people who are trying and help because they haven’t experienced racism, it doesn’t sit right. Surely everyone needs to come together to overcome this not push people away. There seems to be an unhealthy vibe that all white people are being tarred with being racist.

SuckingDieselFella · 04/06/2020 08:26

Umm, could it be because the thread title is You're white. You haven't experienced racism?

Just using my basic intelligence there. Smile

Dyrne · 04/06/2020 08:27

I think there has been a lot of really good discussion and debate in the last few days.

Unfortunately, there has been a lot of “gotcha” threads as well. This is a perfect example.

Why start a thread with a bold statement, then accuse posters trying to understand the context of “whataboutery”? Why make a statement without any links initially to back it up, then say you’re “tired of educating” when posters ask your source?

I understand that the “ALL white people” statements going round we’re started as a kind of “upsetting, isn’t it? How do you think it feels for us all year round?” But it’s been co-opted and now it’s being used by people just wanting to start a fight and who are disinterested in having any sort of real discussion.

SharonasCorona · 04/06/2020 08:27

I don't think you realise how hard travellers have it. Racism towards black people is nothing to what we face every single day.

This thread is becoming more and more hilarious as it goes on, in a pathetic way.

I suspect people want it deleted so they don't have to look at it.

RozHuntleysStump · 04/06/2020 08:28

I’ve been called ‘white pussy’ by Pakistanis and other similar things. I grew up in Bradford. I’ve also been treated badly and called names when I lived in Scotland for being English. Not pleasant but there are arseholes everywhere. They don’t represent all Pakistanis or all Scottish people. These isolated incidents can’t compare with what black people have to contend with but they do happen and It’s still racist/prejudice.

TooTrueToBeGood · 04/06/2020 08:29

Fuck me backwards, why can we not just listen and have empathy for our black friends, neighbours and colleagues. We need to be one society where eveyone is appreciated, valued and loved for the amazing human beings we all are.

It's depressing to see all the rebuttals from white people telling about their experiences as the targets of racism. What a load of shite. Isolated instances or limited periods of being the victim of bigotry does not mean you understand. I am white. I cannot understand what it is like to be on the wrong end of racism every waking day of my life by drawing on any of my own experiences. I can only begin to understand by opening my ears and my brain and truly listening to black people. I believe them. I weep for them. I share their outrage and anger. I support them because they are human beings and have every bit as much of a right to respect, opportunity and love as I do.

Widowodiw · 04/06/2020 08:29

Whoever said white people are responsible for it? Really? If you want to create even more issue then go ahead because as I’ve said in my post above you can’t tarr everyone with the same brush. You should be seeking help from anyone that wants to help and highlighting the racists not grouping everyone together. It’s attitudes like this that will make people stop
Listening.

Abbccc · 04/06/2020 08:29

White people were always free Do you mean in the USA? Throughout history there have definitely been times and places when white people have been enslaved.

horizontilting · 04/06/2020 08:29

It has been said, with increasing frequency over the past few years, that the racism on this site is appalling. That can't be up for debate after this. What a demonstration of the truth of it some posters have given. I know the Nightshift are likely the ones dealing with this last night but someone senior needs to take a look at what's been said, and who has said it, here. It speaks very directly to the tone and spirit of this site, and what they want it to be, going forward.

AtrociousCircumstance · 04/06/2020 08:30

This thread is host to a depressing array of racist apologists. Every gradation, it seems.

OP I hear you.

TabbyMumz · 04/06/2020 08:30

Just another thread of people being nasty to white people, saying all white people are at fault for being white.

ThighThighofthigh · 04/06/2020 08:30

Malcolm X said that white people should not insert themselves into black movements even to help. He said that the presence of white people alters the dynamic and that both sides of the fence subconsciously defer to the white person.

I'm paraphrasing and he later revised his views but it made me think about the role white allies play.

The view of the white women standing between the police and protesters was great to see. But also so wrong that it was almost a paternalistic image.

I don't know whether white people should be marching at all. White people are not used to being told they're not welcome and always assume they are.

TheFencePainter · 04/06/2020 08:31

The only way racism will be challenged is if white people accept they are responsible for it and stand up and challenge it on a daily basis

This is really ignorant. And does no one any favours.

It rings familiar... Oh yeah. This is a version of what stupid tout after every attack "The only way terrorism will be challenged is if Muslim people accept they are responsible for it and stand up and challenge it on a daily basis"

It's so wrong on so many levels to blame everyone for action of small percentage of their group. I am not responsible for policemen in US being racist anymore than my muslim husband is responsible for Manchester attacks... If we see issue we say something, but neither of us should be forced to feel guilty and accept responsibility for someone else's actions only because we share some characteristics.

WaterOffADucksCrack · 04/06/2020 08:31

I'm black and I think this thread is disgusting. There are white people in South Africa living without jobs and homes because the tide has turned. Equality is best. It's time to stop being against each other and fight together for humanity.

Pinkyyy · 04/06/2020 08:31

@SharonasCorona is love for you to tell me what's so hilarious or pathetic about it? I've travelled all up and down this country and I've seen numerous signs saying "NO TRAVELLERS ALLOWED". I've never seen a single sign saying no black people allowed.

Trevsadick · 04/06/2020 08:32

I have related my experience. Given you're not interested in the experiences of black people and are whatabouting on Asian sex gangs, your impassioned reasons for denying me my own opinion is bizarre

No i haven't.

Some said that white people always have the ability to call the police and state. I ponted out a case where thats not correct.

Its not what whataboutary. Thats someone making a factually incorrect statement.

Thats not say I am not interested in whats happening to black people. Or saying it worses. Its an example where white females....children and their families have not been able to do this

The fact that you are not trying to say i don't care about whats happening to black people because I pointed out your ridiculousness at telling someone they are wrong, about their home country.....because you went on holiday there proves you know you are in the wrong.

This is 2 separate points. You were wrong in what you said....and actually quite ridiculous.

The statement about white people always being able to call the authorities isnt quite correct. Especially if you are a woman

They are 2 separate issues. Recognising white girls received no help from anyone when they were being abused.......doesnt mean whats happening to black people is OK. Both are wrong.

The racisim black peolle are facing is on a much larger, more entrenched scale. But that doesnt mean the other didn't happen

Or should we ignore incorrect statements, because thats not as bad as something else that's happening.

JediJim · 04/06/2020 08:33

I don’t particularly like watching GMB in the morning and seeing white liberals and black celebrities, telling us how white people don't understand racism and how we don’t do enough to stop it.
I feel insulted by it.
BTW, the George Floyd death was appalling but in didn’t even happen here.
