To ask about take away food at this time

Is there a risk with take away food? Ie if someone preparing or packing it had the virus and didn’t have symptoms then coughed or sneezed or hadn’t washed their hands thoroughly, can it be passed on?
Probably worrying about nothing as no one really seems concerned re food in this aspect. Thanks

Yes, the virus can be passed by touching something that has the virus on it. Everything you do is a risk in reality - walking past someone, going to the shop, going to work, living with someone who goes out, putting petrol in the car, meeting up with people - social distancing minimises the risk but doesn’t eliminate it. Washing your hands or using sanitiser after touching something and not touching your face minimises the risk but doesn’t eliminate it. Everyone has to make their own decisions about how they manage the risks (within the guidelines) and how they live their lives.

There was an item re this on the BBC website. Generally if the place your takeaway has a good hygiene rating then the preparation of food isn’t a problem. What they did say is that it’s advisable to decant everything into your own bowls/plates, then wash your hands before you eat.
When I thought I’d lose it if I had to cook one more meal we did order from our usual restaurant. We followed the above suggestion, & instead of having a serving spoon in the rice, a spoon in the dhal etc we each had a spoon that was used for taking stuff but not eating from.
Probably still not entirely risk-free, but it gave the restaurant some income & saved my sanity (for a while).

The risk is minuscule, but not zero. If there was any evidence that people were regularly getting ill from takeaways I think we would have heard about it by now.
