To feel I can't be bothered anymore.

This home schooling is just too much. My secondary school children just can't be bothered anymore and I can't really blame them. They get work set but any problems never get answers and the work is never marked. But it's not about that.
It just feels like so much effort. I think the heat and my pregnancy aren't helping but after 11 weeks of nagging them to work I just can't be bothered anymore. They work at school and they will do some bits and pieces now but nothing consistent. I just feel like giving up but is,that really bad? Do I run the risk of them being really behind in September? My husband isn't interested and doesn't help.
Need some motivation for myself and them

What year groups are they in?

Rosebel · 02/06/2020 22:54

Didn't mean to enable voting but I guess YABU keep going with the home schooling
YANBU stop the home schooling.

As a bare minimum they should do some maths and science - catching up on those will be really hard. Also, at least do some reading for English.

Y7 and Y9.

Yr 9 son here. Im wfh. Feel your pain. He has a maths tutor so does that. Also doing French. Trying to get him to do a few other bits but it's hard going

Need some motivation for myself and them

Is it motivation you need or structure and routine?

I think it would bother me more that my kids weren't doing what I told them to. What's the consequence? I mean what else are they doing instead of schoolwork . Are they just allowed to get away with it?

I get that it's tough for both them and you but if they're allowed to not do what you ask in this instance, where will that end?

NuffSaidSam · 02/06/2020 23:08

I'd let the year 9 stop anything that isn't being carried on for GCSE next year. Focus on Maths, Science and English. Try and encourage an interest in the subjects they've chosen for GCSE.

Year 7 I'd just focus on English, Maths and Science and let the rest go. Even if they can just get an hour a day done.

I would encourage and explain why they should be doing it, but I wouldn't stress too much about it. We're only half a term from the summer holidays now.

I'd also encourage them to work on getting better at something they're interested in (music/art/a language/baking/DIY etc) so at least they're in the habit of working at something/putting their mind to something.

I did hear from a teacher in an email to me today that the submission rate for year 10 is now below 50%. DD was working hard and keeping up with her schoolwork but got the impression from her peers that many were not. She has lost interest, motivation and I am sure she is depressed so since the end of April she has fallen behind but by the sounds of it many kids are even more behind. I will encourage her schoolwork but will try and help her find some happiness in life.

Disquieted1 · 02/06/2020 23:15

I hear you. I am not a trained educator and am not up to the job.
What we've been given is online learning and a weekly call asking how we're getting on. There's absolutely no way that a teacher would be able to do my job with online learning and a weekly phone call, so why do people think that I can do theirs?

millymollymoomoo · 02/06/2020 23:16

Completely feel your pain
Mine are smart but lazy
It’s a constant battle
And learning at home from text books and PowerPoint is no where comparable to an engaging teacher who can bring a topic to life face to face
I feel mine will have really regressed and it’s causing a lot of stress ( we both wfh full time )
They need to go back to school

IceBearRocks · 02/06/2020 23:23

I've got a year 8 DS with ASD .....and if he understands that he needs to work ...this is not a holiday but a different normal.....the yep you should carry on !!!

lily2403 · 02/06/2020 23:24

Why won’t your husband help?

Rosebel · 02/06/2020 23:45

Thanks for the replies. My husband thinks school is a waste of time, by some miracle he does, have a job that pays okay and just thinks it should be up to them if they work or not. I'm not too concerned about my Y9 she is clever and will probably do well but my Y7 was behind before lockdown so no doubt has fallen further behind.
I've already let them drop art and music as neither of them are interested but I would like them to do other subjects. My eldest is only interested in health and social care which she is doing for GCSE so I think if I can get her to do that with English and maths we'll be doing well.
Youngest has ASD and desperately needs,a routine which we have tried and seemed to work until Easter but now she's just not interested. I'm sorry but glad others are struggling too. It's a horrible time. Until they go back there's only so much school can do and most parents aren't qualified teachers.
Think I'll try and get them focused on their core subjects but I'm not going to let it get to us too much. It's a rubbish time for all children but teens, need their friends and hobbies at the moment they don't have either.

As teenagers, independent study is going to become more and more important. It's a good skill for them to learn now. It's also good for them to not just give up on stuff when it gets hard. I get that it's difficult to be motivated but you have to keep going because who knows how long this will last?

Aquamarine1029 · 03/06/2020 00:06

I can't give any words of wisdom at all, but I am so happy I don't have to deal with this shit. My children are adults now, and I can't imagine how horrible lockdown has been for those with young children. You have my sympathy.
