Weird title I know. Apologies.
But myself and OH were just discussing my legs. Or more specifically my foot.
I was stretching my leg/foot out (as one does) and he jumped in horror saying 'Ew, that's disgusting?' After much questioning it transpires that I can bend my foot down enough with an outstretched leg so that it's just one straight line (hard to explain).
He tried it and his ankles won't go halfway near to a straight line with his leg.
Is it men? Is it me (dancer all my youth) or can everybody but him do it and I'm not a freak?

What is hyper mobility?! It sounds like people who think they are hyper mobile are just normal and didn't realise!

userabcname · 03/06/2020 08:11

I can do it and I'm not super flexible or a dancer.

pinktaxi · 03/06/2020 09:34

I can do it. I think it's pretty normal. Maybe he has inflexible ankles?

PhoneLock · 03/06/2020 09:40

What is hyper mobility?!

People who just can't sit still?

Ninkanink · 03/06/2020 09:42

No...I’m sure the people who say they are hyper mobile are actually hyper mobile...

midnightstar66 · 03/06/2020 09:44

I can do that and certainly no dancer

LittleCandle · 03/06/2020 09:53

I can, but have slightly hypermobile joints and my knees also bend the wrong way when 'straight'.

MumW · 03/06/2020 09:58

Both DH & I can do it and I have very tight leg muscles and stiff ankles.
Both DDs have done pointe work so can also do it.
Your DH is the weird one. 😉😁

midnightstar66 · 03/06/2020 10:01

I have a very odd combination of very bendy joints but very tight muscles so I can do all sorts of freaky things with my fingers, wrists, arms m, pop my leg behind my head or get in to the lotus position effortlessly, my foot sits straight like that naturally when I have my leg extended and goes further if I push yet I can barely get past my knees trying to touch my toes and can't even nearly straighten my legs if sitting on the floor with my back straight. My muscles seem to get sore very easily which I assume is linked.

midnightstar66 · 03/06/2020 10:02

Hyper mobility means outside the range of normal bendiness - not being able to sit still is hyperactive.

cardibach · 03/06/2020 10:05

@Horehound

I’ll tell that to the podiatrist who made me bespoke insoles to stop my hyper mobile ankles rolling and fucking up my feet and knees, shall I? We could both have saved a lot of time and me a lot of money if we had just realised my joints were perfectly normal...
Jocasta2018 · 03/06/2020 10:21

I can do it - never danced. It's the natural position for my feet eg I'm reading this thread lying on my sofa, my legs are crossed & my feet are straight from my knees to my toes.
I put it down from sleeping on my front as a baby (in fact I still sleep on my front completely flat out!).

Ninkanink · 03/06/2020 10:59

Yes it’s my natural position too.

Bluesheep8 · 03/06/2020 11:09

Yes I can do that

TeaStory · 03/06/2020 11:32

Well my rheumatologist diagnosed me with hypermobility so yeah I'm pretty sure I am not "normal".

Camomila · 03/06/2020 11:39

You can also be hypermobile joints but not have hypermobility syndrome...thats what a dr diagnosed me with once when I managed to hurt my elbow by carrying a normal shopping bag.
Basically your joints are bendier than normal but it doesn't cause you a lot of pain/affect your life.

lesbihonest · 03/06/2020 11:43

I can put my knees flat on the floor with my legs bent - and then put my head on top of my feet .. so sort of like folded completely in half . Not sure how normal that is . I’m also dyspraxic and have hyper mobility at my feet, ankles, hips, wrists and neck .

steppemum · 03/06/2020 11:43

Your DH is the weird one.

you do realise how rude that is to those people who can't, and adding a smily face doesn't make it less so.

I know lots of people who can't. Their ankle joints just don't bend that way. I am one of them. On the other hand I have always been able to put my hands flat on the floor and can do the Asian squat (well, I used to be able to)

we are all different, which is fun and interesting, until some people go - really? Someone is different to me? They must be abnormal Hmm

lesbihonest · 03/06/2020 11:44

Diagnosed by an OT when I was 11 - I used to love OT for dyspraxia as I got to spend the whole time lying on the floor whilst the OT moved my head around !

BertieBotts · 03/06/2020 11:44

I think I am hypermobile but not enough so to cause a problem. However I am keeping an eye on DC. My sister used to sit in the W leg position as a toddler, and DS2 does the same now, I've heard you should discourage them from doing it so I'll ask his doctor at the next check up.

I did have a weird moment a few months ago where I went to press a stiff button with my thumb and instead of putting pressure on the button, my thumb just bent backwards on itself instead, was completely bizarre and a bit alarming. If anything else happens like that I might go and get the potential hypermobility checked out as I assume that means I need to do something about it.

I don't think pointing your toes is an abnormal ability to have though or a sign of being hypermobile!

emilybrontescorsett · 03/06/2020 11:47

I can do it, sounds like your dh is not very flexible.

ChilliCheese123 · 03/06/2020 11:48

My dp thinks it’s weird that when I sit with my legs in the ‘lotus’ type position with the soles of my feet pressed together, my knees touch the floor on each side. I think women have more flexible hips and pelvises for obvious reasons

Zilla1 · 03/06/2020 11:49

Teastory, most people would either understand hyper mobility, BJHS, OI, Ehlers or Marfan and similar diseases and disorders exist or at least would recognise the limits of their understanding and not dismiss the existence of something they don't understand.

I hope your condition is well managed at the moment and doesn't impact your life too much.

Ninkanink · 03/06/2020 11:49

FGS don’t tell me people are actually getting hurt and upset over not having the ‘right’ kind of ankle?? Give me strength...It’s obvious that whoever said that was being facetious!

Don’t you feel embarrassed at being so easily offended?

Nobody actually cares whether or not you can or cannot do this with your feet.

Soubriquet · 03/06/2020 11:50

Yes I can do it

I was a ballroom dancer from the age of 4-11.

What I can’t do though, is touch my toes without bending me knees.

I don’t even get close
