Weird title I know. Apologies.
But myself and OH were just discussing my legs. Or more specifically my foot.
I was stretching my leg/foot out (as one does) and he jumped in horror saying 'Ew, that's disgusting?' After much questioning it transpires that I can bend my foot down enough with an outstretched leg so that it's just one straight line (hard to explain).
He tried it and his ankles won't go halfway near to a straight line with his leg.
Is it men? Is it me (dancer all my youth) or can everybody but him do it and I'm not a freak?

I can, definitely not a dancer, got kicked out of ballet for not knowing left from right at about 3 😂

bubblev · 02/06/2020 22:06

DH can definitely not sit comfortably cross legged & when he does his legs are miles from the floor so maybe @mumwon

canigooutyet · 02/06/2020 22:07

I have to be careful how I place my hands @bubblev when resting on them. One way wrong and I get the weird elbow thing that I thought was normal lol, or I dislocated something. Even carrying bags can be problematic.

When I was younger I used to ignore and just brave it through a lot of stuff. Now, when I do something wrong my joints quickly let me know and I have to pay more attention to wrist placement.

.
. I don’t have hypermobility. Just over decades I’ve had to learn some weird poses to stretch something out.

PhoneLock · 02/06/2020 22:07

I can do it. My big lump of a DH had no problems doing too. Perhaps he should take up ballet.

Prettybubblesintheair · 02/06/2020 22:07

I can do it and I’m very much not a dancer! Dh can’t.

Mytimetogo · 02/06/2020 22:09

I can. Not danced since I was about 12 though.

bubblev · 02/06/2020 22:09

@shredme

I don't know how common it is, the yoga teacher used me as an example of what not to do in the class & I have to actively remember to turn them as their natural position is wrong.

Bluntness100 · 02/06/2020 22:09

Christmas, that’s interesting, I’m not Asian though, I’m Scottish, with no Asian descent..😊

Bubble no my bum doesn’t actually hit the floor, it’s an inch or so off.

BalloonSlayer · 02/06/2020 22:09

Isn't this just pointing your toes, that completely ordinary thing that everyone can do?

ChanklyBore · 02/06/2020 22:10

I can do it. I do it all night every night when I sleep (on my front)

How do other front sleepers who can’t flatten their feet manage? Ankles at right angles? I can’t imagine !

Mytimetogo · 02/06/2020 22:12

DH and DS1 can't. DS 2 and I can!

LynetteScavo · 02/06/2020 22:14

Yes I can. I've just given myself cramp seeing if I can.

I can also do the Asian squat.

emwithme · 02/06/2020 22:15

Yes, I can. Did ballet from age 3 - 13. In fact, I'm sitting in bed doing "good toes, naughty toes". Will check with DH once he's out of the bath.

Also hypermobile, and could still put my palms flat on the floor at 9 months pregnant.

ClientQ · 02/06/2020 22:15

Yes but mine (if I'm sitting with legs up) sit at about a 45 angle anyway. I have a calcaneonavicular coalition in both feet and have shattered both feet and ankles Grin
My feet look very odd Confused

steppemum · 02/06/2020 22:16

though he is three and can also squat with feet flat on the ground

Now this has thrown me, so can I, can’t everyone? I’m fifty one.

I actually learnt to do this when I lived in Asia. I had to do stretches every evening and practice until I could, because if I visited a local person's house, we often squatted to do stuff (eg cook together) and it was embarrassing not to be able to, and the floor wasn't great for sitting on (hence the squat)

You need to stretch your calf muscles enough that your weight can balance further over your feet when squatting.
(but I still can't point my toes like in the Op)

After I came back, I remained able to do it for years, but no longer, since I broke my ankle and it was pinned

Nottherealslimshady · 02/06/2020 22:17

@ElectricTonight ahhh I see, I was picturing soles of feet down 🤦‍♀️

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 02/06/2020 22:17

I can do it (& further) but I do have hypemobility syndrome Grin

lljkk · 02/06/2020 22:17

Thanks @McPie

PintOfGin · 02/06/2020 22:17

Yes I can but I was a dancer too Grin
My husband can't do it either but my 2 year old son can do who knows lol

bubblev · 02/06/2020 22:18

@bluntness100 whenever I did a yoga class lots of people would struggle with the asian squat, including myself.

SoberCurious · 02/06/2020 22:19

So just pointing your toe?

Holothane · 02/06/2020 22:19

If you mean foot on bed or floor virtually then no I can’t.

BertieBotts · 02/06/2020 22:20

I can do it. I used to do ballet as a small child but not any more. I am pretty flexible - possibly slightly hypermobile actually, if that's a thing.

I do squat. I read a few years ago that it was helpful for childbirth so I started doing it every time I had to bend down in case I ever had another baby in the hope it would make the birth easier :o Didn't work but DS2 was back to back so probably that was why. I did actually squat a bit at the end to help him descend! To be honest though I'm not sure I squat properly, I sort of sit on my ankles whereas I think you're meant to more hover. Also whenever I see myself squatting next to small DC in photos I think I look bloody weird TBH Blush

ShredMeJillianIWantToBeNatalie · 02/06/2020 22:21

bubblev I honestly don’t know, I guess all my family can do it...although thinking about it, when I had a personal trainer years ago he was constantly telling me to straighten my arms doing press ups and couldn’t understand why they would bend past straight (if that makes sense?)

BertieBotts · 02/06/2020 22:22

OK no never mind, I have just googled and apparently I do Asian squat. Woohoo! A skill I never knew I had!
