Beach or museum?

Pickles89 · 02/06/2020 18:45

Settle an argument for me please Mumsnet. If you take children out of the equation, would you rather spend a day at the beach or in a museum? My mother reckons adults rarely choose to go to the beach unless to satisfy their kids. Personally I think that's nonsense - I for one would much rather hit the beach!

YANBU = Beach
YABU = Museum

Which would you choose?

Depends on the weather - bright and dry even if it's chilly beach any day. Ours are beautiful, vast and make for amazing walking but on a grey, damp, cold day I'd rather be indoors

Happymum12345 · 02/06/2020 19:30

A warm sunny beach!

poozel · 02/06/2020 19:32

Beach. For me, absolutely nothing beats a walk with my dog on the beach.

Reader1984 · 02/06/2020 19:42

Museum for me, shade, learning something, mooching about, coffee shop, gift shop..

ErrolTheDragon · 02/06/2020 19:43

It would depend which museum and which beach. But it's not really an either/or - we enjoy both, in different ways. Why compare apples and oranges when you can have fruit salad?Grin

Beach every time. Even if it’s cold & windy I love a walk along the beach.

It’s such a shame I live about as far from a beach as it’s possible to be in the U.K.!

AriettyHomily · 02/06/2020 20:34

Beach

BarbedBloom · 02/06/2020 20:52

Museum. I hate lying on the beach. Whenever we go on holiday we always make sure there are lots of places to visit like museums as we couldn't stand lying on a beach or by the pool all day.

I also hated the beach as a child

BendingSpoons · 02/06/2020 20:54

The voting is 50/50 right now! Definitely beach for me. I love the water, being outdoors. I find museums boring Blush

IncrediblySadToo · 02/06/2020 21:00

Beach - anytime! I far prefer being outside somewhere natural than in a museum. I prefer natural beaches than 'the seaside' but sand & water and I'm happy

Disclaimer - not English beaches in bank holidays, that's hell, I'll head for the Forrest instead.

SecretNutellaFix · 02/06/2020 21:05

Museum, hands down.
The beach is too hot, too sandy, the ground to get there is too uneven and I'm fed up of twisting my ankle needlessly, there are usually lots of people around and the accompanying noise and rubbish.

PickyourselfupNow · 02/06/2020 21:19

Both.

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 02/06/2020 21:24

Museum every time. DH too. My sister would almost certainly say beach.
(Can't vote as I'm on the app).

museumum · 02/06/2020 21:31

Nothing beats walking on a quiet beach when the weather is warm.
But lying or sitting on a crowded beach when it’s hot Is my idea of hell.
Museum visit sits in between.

FlyAwayLikeABird · 02/06/2020 21:55

Love strolling into town museum hopping.

heartsonacake · 02/06/2020 22:21

Beach! If the weathers good, obviously.

BogRollBOGOF · 02/06/2020 22:27

Depends on how good the sand is for sandcastles.

I love a beach with a stream so you can play at damming it up and forming meanders and oxbow lakes. Grin

Beach if I'm with DH because he rockets through and doesn't loiter and absorb the details.

Museum if it's just a flop on a lounger type beach.

RoseMartha · 02/06/2020 22:31

Well it would depend on the museum, the beach and the weather.

One of my favourite things is walking on a sandy shoreline on a wide beach in the west country. However, I do not live down there so this is a rare treat every couple years.

My nearest beach is stony with sand at low tide if it goes out far enough.

I also like history and would go to a museum, but probably not on a very nice sunny day.

bookmum08 · 02/06/2020 22:55

I enjoy both.
But going to a beach isn't just sitting on a beach. Usually a bit of that plus walking along the pier (I think it's Bournemouth pier that has historic photos you can look at), usually some stalls with artwork you can admire, interesting architecture, gift shops, loads of food variety. When I go the beach I don't go to the beach - I go to The Seaside. I reckon the seaside is different to beach.

Saracen · 02/06/2020 23:10

I like both equally. Prefer beach when it's good weather and museum when it isn't.
