To ask you what this cupboard is?

Posting shamelessly for traffic
This fitted cupboard is in the house am moving in to, haven't been able to see the house in person due to covid.
What is the bit Ive circled? Space for a bed? A dresser ? Shelving ?
My bed has a headboard that would never fit in there but also looks too high for a shelf. Too low for a bed, too high for a shelf . Cannot figure it out . I have the Ikea hemnes bed.

It’s the headboard and it’s the space a divan bed will slide into.

Bellyfullofbiscuits · 01/06/2020 09:20

That would be for your bed to go on there. It has bedside tables either side.

daisychicken · 01/06/2020 09:21

Looks like space for a divan bed with bedside cupboards either side. Could you put a chest of drawers there and your bed elsewhere?

thatgingergirl · 01/06/2020 09:23

Its to put a bed without a headboard into, so just the base and mattress.

AlCalavicci · 01/06/2020 09:23

It looks like space for a bed that doesn't had a proper head board.
How high is the shelf ?

imnotyourmum · 01/06/2020 11:21

I don't know how high the shelf is yet , won't enter the property till Thursday . My bed isn't a divan . Will it look silly to just have the bed somewhere else?

If there is room for the bed elsewhere then fill that space with a dressing table and over mirror, looks like you get good light there and looks like a socket for your hairdryer.

Ifailed · 01/06/2020 11:35

put your bed in the other way round.

raspberryk · 01/06/2020 11:38

If you're buying the house rip it out it's hideous. But yes it's space for a divan.

Seeline · 01/06/2020 11:38

That looks as though it would be really uncomfortable unless you were lying down. You couldn't sit up in bed to read with that shelf digging in the back of your neck/head.

RogueV · 01/06/2020 11:42

Have to agree with @raspberryk it’s pretty ugly

MitziK · 01/06/2020 12:00

I've often wondered how people can tolerate sleeping with a cupboard looming over their heads and boxed in at the sides - it just doesn't seem right to me.

I'd be looking at getting the thing taken out - IIRC, the overbed unit, etc, is all separate pieces - and replacing with normal furniture. Might mean replacing the laminate.

And exercise a bit of cynicism regarding the weird camera angle/lens, as it's probably not as long or wide as that photo makes it appear.

imnotyourmum · 01/06/2020 13:24

Don't need comments about it being hideous and ugly , I'm renting and this is one of the few properties that were ok with me being a single mum (working ) on benefits. Very much doubt the landlord will be happy with me ripping it out and don't have the funds to .Do people not think before they post ?
I like the idea of the dressing table . Will have to see measurements to gauge whether the bed can go the other way also.

Fine. Sorry for people not having psychic powers to know that you aren't buying it, even though they said 'if you're buying it'.

The photo is still dodgy. You might end up having to buy a new bed, especially if yours is a Kingsize (lots of those solid fitments are based upon a 4'6" divan).
