Police officers kneeling with protesters over George floyd

Have seen the pictures, they make me feel quite uncomfortable. I understand they are kneeling in forgiveness but it seems quite distasteful given how the poor man died. Aibu?

I think they are kneeling in solidarity. I am not 100% sure but a lot of sports stars kneel on one knee when The American national anthem is played before a game. It's in a protest at police brutality and began in around 2016 so I think it's in reference to that.

MrDarcysMa · 31/05/2020 23:10

You should do some research on what kneeling in the black power movement means

StepAwayFromGoogle · 31/05/2020 23:11

They are trying to show respect and solidarity. Why would you think it's distasteful?

iklboo · 31/05/2020 23:12

You are WAY overthinking this.

SachaStark · 31/05/2020 23:14

They are kneeling in solidarity, not forgiveness. Why on earth would it be in forgiveness? Confused

Agree with a PP, maybe research what kneeling symbolises regarding black power.

makingmiracles · 31/05/2020 23:14

Ok I accept that I don’t know the connotations of the kneeling in America. Just seemed a bit grim considering George died whilst a police officer knelt on his neck.

That's some reach OP.

CinnabarRed · 31/05/2020 23:15

Of course they’re not kneeling in “forgiveness” FFS. It’s solidarity for the Black Lives Matter movement. Pathetic.

howlatthetrees · 31/05/2020 23:16

You’re really overthinking this

CinnabarRed · 31/05/2020 23:26

I mean, how can you take something so human and important, and interpret it in such a small and mean-minded way?

Jellycatspyjamas · 31/05/2020 23:35

Who did you think was forgiving who?

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 31/05/2020 23:41

OP it is quite surprising that you started a thread about this when you clearly have no understanding of the subject at all.

saraclara · 31/05/2020 23:48

The whole 'taking a knee' thing was all over our own news for months back when it was happening in US sport and Trump was losing his rag. Where the hell were you, OP?

Ginkypig · 31/05/2020 23:57

Well almost anything can seem grim if you don't understand the meaning of something and then don't do any research to educate yourself before forming an opinion.

It's especially important if you are forming and then sharing an uneducated opinion about an emotive and important subject such as this making

I'm not trying to make you feel bad and I'm honestly not having a go but it is important to try to educate yourself or at least ask before condemning someone's behaviour.

AgeLikeWine · 01/06/2020 00:04

So the decent, humane non-racist police can’t win, whatever they do?

If they don’t express publicly their concerns over the murder of Mr Floyd, they are assumed to be complicit and if they do, it’s ‘distasteful’?

Bridecilla · 01/06/2020 00:13

The op clearly doesn't understand the meaning behind kneeling. I'll admit that I don't fully understand either but instead of berating wouldn't it be better to explain and educate?

Thelnebriati · 01/06/2020 00:17

Forgiveness? What is it you think they need to forgive?

HmmLetsSee · 01/06/2020 00:30

Tbf I can see how @OP would think the police were perhaps being funny kneeling, considering how George was killed.

OP clearly didn't realise it may have been them kneeling in solidarity with protesters.

HmmLetsSee · 01/06/2020 00:30
  • Or kneeling in a sense of asking for forgiveness for the crime one of their own committed.
Durgasarrow · 01/06/2020 00:32

They are taking a knee the way football players like Colin Kaepernick did. It was a beautiful and respectful thing to do.

MorganKitten · 01/06/2020 00:43

If OP finds it disrespectful they need to educate themselves. I watch American Football so know about it but it’s been reported on all over the world.

Thepigeonsarecoming · 01/06/2020 00:47

OP you are absolutely being unreasonable, hopefully you have learned now and won’t post threads about areas you have no knowledge of

MintyMabel · 01/06/2020 00:50

This is possibly the most ridiculous thing I have read in quite some time.

Taking a knee is a pretty well publicised thing. Perhaps try reading something.

Mummyshark2019 · 01/06/2020 00:53

And another thread where the OP asks a question and gets lambasted instead of corrected. Be kind people.

Disabrie22 · 01/06/2020 00:54

I keep seeing this lately with race matters - someone is slammed down hard for their lack of knowledge. Only one person here actually told her what the kneeling meant. You tell her to educate herself - if you have the knowledge why don’t you educate her? - educate not shame people for Gods sake - or they will never ask and never learn. We would never expect our teachers to behave this way with our children.
