Have seen the pictures, they make me feel quite uncomfortable. I understand they are kneeling in forgiveness but it seems quite distasteful given how the poor man died. Aibu?

Christ.

BlackBucketOfCheese · 01/06/2020 00:58

Maybe black people are a bit exhausted with having to explain our existence and cause for the entirety of our lives?

Ginkypig · 01/06/2020 01:54

Maybe people are sick and tired of repeatedly and unrelentingly educating and being expected to educate capable even intelligent grown ups who haven't as much as googled something.

It is not the job of the minority to teach the privileged.

Why is it so hard for an adult to take responsibility for themselves and the ramifications they and their (in lots of cases ignorant opinions) have on the world and the people around them.

That being said if the op had started this thread with an open and interested question about why (in this example) police were kneeling and expressed they were worried that it may be negative or worse more acts of abuse etc then I'm sure lots of people would have willingly engaged in conversation and have been happy to pass on their knowledge and experiences.

Op I'm not aiming all of this at you personally.

Oh god OP. Bless you but this is a complete reach. They are kneeling to show solidarity with the Black Live Matter movement. The image is so powerful because it’s officers saying that all these awful things that have happened shouldn’t have. If you’re going to get offended please do a basic google search before hand.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 01/06/2020 03:41

NFL players knelt during the National anthem before their games last year in to bring people’s attention to Racial inequality in the US. (Peaceful protesting)
They were reprimanded and fined by their league.

Colin Kaepernick continued to do it and was ultimately fired from his team and given crap from Trump and his minions for being disrespectful

Mypathtriedtokillme · 01/06/2020 03:49

Don’t you think them kneeling was a way to show solidarity with the protestors.
To try and ease the tension with understanding and agreement rather than making it worse by continually meeting it with aggression, inflaming an already tense situation?

Coyoacan · 01/06/2020 04:18

I sympathise OP. I don't follow US sports either and the image of that vile man kneeling on George Floyd's neck would have been the first thing that came to my mind too.

JackiFazaki · 01/06/2020 05:41

The Minneapolis Police Chief went to the memorial flowers.
He knelt and prayed.
He spoke to the family. He said that the other officers who failed to intervene were complicit in their silence.
It's on CNN.

It went well beyond sports. It was a political matter.

Here's a link about the New York Police Officers kneeling.

CovidicusRex · 01/06/2020 05:50

I think it’s absolutely fantastic that police officers are showing solidarity with protestors. It sends the message that both parties are there peacefully and is a good example of how protestors and police can work together to ensure that protests are an effective and peaceful method of political participation. Fantastic piece of policing there.

You should do some research on what kneeling in the black power movement means

This. Many times over. Educate yourself.

SimonJT · 01/06/2020 08:03

It’s up to white people to educate themselves, us people of colour are sick of having to justify our existence and explain our fight to the privileged who exist in their safe little bubbles.

Sparklfairy · 01/06/2020 08:06

Maybe black people are a bit exhausted with having to explain our existence and cause for the entirety of our lives?

Well you either want people to be educated or not. I swear sometimes other people's ignorance is an excuse to feel even more victimised.

Etinox · 01/06/2020 08:11

They’re talking about the kneeling in radio 4 now

peopleherearerightcunts · 01/06/2020 08:12

When has kneeling ever meant giving someone forgiveness?

It usually means; asking forgiveness, showing solidarity or showing submission.

gobbynorthernbird · 01/06/2020 08:16

@Sparklfairy

Well you either want people to be educated or not. I swear sometimes other people's ignorance is an excuse to feel even more victimised.

Or, you know, people (who quite obviously already have Internet access) could Google.

As a white person I fully support the notion that we should educate ourselves.
In fact, we just need to pay attention and listen when black people talk. Or just to the news when black issues are involved.
This is true for most issues.
It's true for men in relation to women. For rich in relation to poor. For healthy in relation to ill. For able in relation to disabled. And so on.

More importantly, we should not pass judgement on a situation or behaviour without seeking more information about it first.
This is valid for everyone.

africansassenach · 01/06/2020 08:21

The entitlement of white people to want blacks people to continually teach them. Please.

JackiFazaki · 01/06/2020 10:46

AnyFucker It was quite emotional watching that. Thanks for posting it.

BlackBucketOfCheese · 01/06/2020 10:47

The entitlement of white people to want blacks people to continually teach them. Please.

It never ends. And the spitting rage when we dare challenge their bullshit.

ITonyah · 01/06/2020 10:49

Blimey. The OP came from a good place.

ITonyah · 01/06/2020 10:51

Maybe black people are a bit exhausted with having to explain our existence and cause for the entirety of our lives?

Tbf it's mainly a US thing and I'm not surprised OP didn't realise. I'm sure she does now? Maybe be a bit more tolerant of people who get things wrong but wamt to learn?

JackiFazaki · 01/06/2020 10:59

And the spitting rage when we dare challenge their bullshit.
Institutional racism, is still rife even decades after what happened around, and after, Stephen Lawrence's death.
Paper policies need to be lived policies, not given lip service, nor used to prop up a c.v., and then hidden in the HR handbook.
