Are you doing anything to prepare for a second wave?

Historically we are going to get one. Seeing pictures of places rammed is scary.

So if so, what are you doing to prepare? If only to make another potential lockdown a bit easier.

I've been picking up a couple of extra tins a week and some UHT milk. I've also put some bits aside for the kids to keep them entertained.

Well my husband and I accidentally bought 40 toilet rolls between us the other day so we will be eating that till Christmas. At least we won't starve.

Ghostlyglow · 31/05/2020 20:18

Well @NaNaNaNaNaNaBaNaNa at least you'll have currency to barter with when the second wave hits Grin

SheldonSaysSo1 · 31/05/2020 20:40

I've been getting a few extra tins of things we already use plus making sure I have extra toilet rolls, pain killers and dry food stocks for allergies. I am focusing on things that have been hard to get during this lockdown such as baked beans, flour, sugar, other baking supplies and lots of the free from items. All these products have dates of 18 month to 3 years and we will use them regardless of if there is a further lockdown. I don't want to feel stressed about not being able to get some paracetamol when my arthritis flares or feel anxious when we run out of toilet rolls.

SheldonSaysSo1 · 31/05/2020 21:17

Can I add that the shortages first time round were not supposed to be due to people panic buying loads of each item. Due to our supply chain working on the just in time principle, it couldn't cope with people each buying a bit more than usual in order to prepare for a likely lockdown. There were some people who purchased trolley loads of toilet rolls but most people added a bit more to their trollies and the system couldn't cope.

Truthpact · 31/05/2020 21:55

The shelves here aren't full either. I'm screwed during the week because I start work at 8 and finish at 4. By the time I finish work, most stuff is gone, like flour, pasta, any kind of baking stuff, yoghurts, etc. I have only just now started seeing flour back on the shelves in Tesco, I could only get it from independent shops before. Don't think I'll manage to get any chocolate chips for a while now, everyone is buying them. Can only go on weekends and then I have to go in early to get what I need.

It's still survival of the quickest here. Sod anyone else basically. Grin

ITonyah · 31/05/2020 21:56

Waitrose and Sainsbury's near me have plenty of flour of all kinds. Tesco still doesn't.

newmumwithquestions · 31/05/2020 22:04

I’m expecting to have to isolate again soon. Probably not with actual covid but the DC are back at school /nursery and they’re little germ magnets so if they run any temperatures that’s us in for 2 weeks again. One of them picked up a bug during the last lockdown. I don’t know how as they hadn’t been anywhere. But she had a high temperature so we locked in for 2 weeks to make sure.

So I’m keeping milk in the freezer as getting it was a right pain last time we isolated.
We have 2 weeks food in the house at all times anyway, even if the combinations will get very strange! (Boiled rice with baked beans anyone?)

Lucyccfc68 · 31/05/2020 22:42

Shelves were bare the first time round because so many people were buying 'a few extra tins and packets'. That's thousands of people who think buying 'extra' doesn't make them part of the problem. You are the problem and you created the shortages.

You are as selfish as the arseholes that go to the beach in their thousands.

SoupDragon · 31/05/2020 22:55

Don't think I'll manage to get any chocolate chips for a while now, everyone is buying them.

I just buy bars of chocolate and cut them into small chunks with a knife. I've not bought chocolate chips for years.

@frazzledfatty

How do people find the time for all the planning, stock rotating, booking slots, etc?

What with working p/t, homeschooling, more cleaning, more cooking, exercise, zoom social events I've never had less time. Barely even watch tv anymore.

Are lots on this thread retired, unemployed, children grown up/childless etc?

I wrote out a list of most eaten foods (we meal plan so this was easy) I took a quick look at what what was in my pantry, saw what I needed to fill out two weeks worth of food with Bought groceries Put newest pasta at the back of the pasta shelf Repeat

It honestly didn’t take much more time than normal shopping for me.

But I also add to the list as I open a box/jar/tin whatnot.

When things have been on offer we have always bought extra so as to not have to buy full price.

We do the same with meat.

I am in a privileged position to do this. I know this.

Is corona prepping going to be a new hobby for middle class SAHMs?

ArriettyJones · 01/06/2020 01:18

@ChilliCheese123

Is corona prepping going to be a new hobby for middle class SAHMs?
Yep. They’re the only ones who need to eat and/or avoid crowds, so it will definitely be MC SAHMs Confused
Bluewarbler27 · 01/06/2020 02:14

No because we don’t know there will be a “second wave”.

LucaFritz · 01/06/2020 02:29

Freezer and cupboards are stocked up well and I've avoided going anywhere apart from the odd walk to get some sun and air. Can't believe the amount of idiots out and about im in Yorkshire and they are breaking into parks and ripping down the police tape and signs and the litter and drug paraphernalia left at beauty spots is disgusting Angry i hope they all catch it and rid us of their stupidity and selfishness! Me and DS are staying indoors until at least August its not worth the risk

NudgeUnit · 01/06/2020 02:50

I was on the prepping threads in January/February, for the chat as much as the prepping advice tbh. But the prepping advice was invaluable as it turned out, because I ended up with a houseful of hungry growing lads wanting 3 square meals a day, as one by one their school, college and uni closed. I also turned out to have one who has needed to be shielded, but as we had a phone call instead of a letter originally, we didn't get any preferential treatment for supermarket deliveries until last week (finally!). As more understanding of the virus has emerged, it turns out that I'm also in a high risk category, so it was good that we hunkered down early on.

If it hadn't been for the prepping threads, we would really have struggled. As it was, we were well prepared and well stocked, despite being on a tight budget generally and a very, very tight budget at the time. We were able to sit tight without worrying about pasta or loo roll or paracetamol or prescription drugs or soap or any of those other things that people ended up panic buying or having to cope without.

I don't get the denial on these threads. It was strange enough in February, when the writing was pretty plainly on the wall, but now...? Why does anyone in their right mind still think it can't/won't happen to them? Why are people insisting we won't have another lockdown? What's the relevance of that if you personally have to self-isolate because you're ill or have been contacted by the TTI team? Particularly now the talk is of localised mini-lockdowns, what are you going to eat if your local area has been sealed off and you can't get to your usual supermarket or its stocks are dwindling?

But more than that, I don't get the hate. Even if you don't think it's a big deal or you think preppers are 'middle class SAHMs with pantries' Hmm ...well, what's it to you? Don't join in with the prepping then, and don't join in with the thread. You seem to think your sneering makes you cleverer or more knowledgeable than the OP and those of us who agree with her, but in reality this rabid desire to argue and ridicule says more about your fears. It's as though you daren't acknowledge risk, danger or fear, as then it will be real and might feel overwhelming. It's like the social media equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears and your tongue out, while humming loudly to block out anything a bit bad. I mean, grow the fuck up.

And don't even get me started on the ignorance. Anyone asserting stridently, like a pp, that 'China was the worst affected country and hasn't had a second wave or second lockdown' needs to do a bit more reading before they slag off anyone else's opinion. China is not even in the top ten and hasn't been for some time. The UK is second for deaths and fourth for infections. You don't have to be panicking to think a bit of planning ahead might be a good idea next time round.

understandmenow · 01/06/2020 02:58

Nope

Lucyccfc68 · 01/06/2020 08:01

I don't feel the need to join in with the 'preppers' but I joined the thread because it impacts on me and my family, as it means I struggled to buy any eggs, toilet roll, pasta, flour, milk and tinned goods. I may not have to self isolate, but I do need to eat and wipe my backside.

countrygirl99 · 01/06/2020 08:15

Most chimney sweeps are older and might get badly hit. Best get your chimney swept now while they are still around

ITonyah · 01/06/2020 08:28

Particularly now the talk is of localised mini-lockdowns, what are you going to eat if your local area has been sealed off and you can't get to your usual supermarket or its stocks are dwindling?
A localised lockdown won't mean they literally cut off villages with no access to food Confused

SoupDragon · 01/06/2020 08:38

I have a video of my cat stalking a fly. He could have been wearing a full set of Morris dancer bells and you still wouldn't have heard him. He was moving so slowly.

SoupDragon · 01/06/2020 08:38

🤣🤣🤣 clearly the wrong thread.

ITonyah · 01/06/2020 08:41

Maybe you could train your ninja cat to slip through any local lockdown dome and head straight for Budgens.

SoupDragon · 01/06/2020 08:45

They were meant to be bringing us fresh pigeon to make pie with but have been utterly useless throughout lockdown.

nutellafortea · 01/06/2020 08:50

As soon as I can I plan to move countries, couldn't face another lockdown in Spain - this first one has been awful enough for us. Never seen my usually very cheerful husband so depressed. I'm not sure if we willl move back to the UK... or perhaps to developing country in S. America (where husband is from), where the lockdown has not been so draconian. Spanish politics are giving me the fear atm.

Drivingdownthe101 · 01/06/2020 08:56

nutellafortea I do wonder when people call for ‘stricter lockdowns like Spain’, they realise quite how horrific that was for a lot of Spanish people? Especially the children.
My MIL is only 65 but has lost a huge amount of her fitness being stuck inside for 9 weeks bar a weekly trip to the shop. She used to go to the gym 5 days a week and now cant do very much at all. FIL is similar. Used to play golf 3 or 4 times a week which kept him fit and healthy, but wasn’t allowed to even walk down the road for 9 weeks so has lost his fitness too. Both now at much higher risk of complications from coronavirus than they were before I imagine!
If theyd been allowed to leave the apartment they could have walked to keep their fitness.
