Inessential shopping AIBU?

DS2 recently graduated as a doctor and has started work as an FiY1 about 3 hours from home ( his uni placed them at their last placement hospital), in a hospital where no shops are within walking distance.
He is working a rolling rota of 3 days of 12h plus shifts on, then 3 days off. ( He is on a covid ward and has seen many deaths if relevant)
His copy of the BMJ ( a general medical journal) comes to our house, so each week on the way home from my weekly shopping trip I call into the garage ( go past it) and buy a packet of percy pigs , then call into the post office and send him the journal and the pigs ( he is tired on day 1 of rest, bored on days 2 and 3)
As the weeks go on the person in the garage has got more and more grumpy with me, and this week was full on “ is this all you are buying”
Am IBU sending my poor boy a packet of sweets each week?

These threads are getting really boring now. Nobody really gives a fuck either way.

As long as you keep 2m distance from other people, I don’t think YABU.

On Monday people can meet in gardens, groups of up to six with 2m’s distance. Surely by now it is time for the ‘shopping police’ to stop?

Also, it doesn’t really matter what we think. You’re not breaking any of the rules, it’s up to you to do as you please within them.

I had the full on “ hard “ treatment from the staff today, i felt hard done by but wanted to know general opinion.

Can he not get the magazine delivered to his own place? You could buy the Percy Pigs in bulk and send him a box full.

next time buy 6 packets of Percy pigs and then take one every week to your son. If you are going to make non essential journeys then do them with a bit of common sense.

I think it’s lovely you’re doing that. By a few months into FY1 I was too tired to keep up with the BMJ but would have loved the sweets!

You can access it online I think though if you’d rather avoid sending it. Just need to log into BMA I think.

Sparkling, my thoughts too but one doesn’t want to run the risk of being accused of withholding essential info.
No point changing addresses, he is only there till mid July, then home briefly, then off to a totally different hospital

winter i am not taking the pigs to my son, or making any inessential journeys, I am adding in extra stop offs between home and the supermarket

Why don't you just but a few bags at once and so reduce the number of times you are potentially putting someone at risk of send a pack of sweets that you get when doing your regular shop

YY I think bulk buying the sweets is the way to go.

He can access BMJ online if he wants to read it. It’s sweet (haha) of you but pretty inappropriate. Why not order things online to be delivered to him instead.

Tbh i think any shopping is ok.

Ok will bulk buy the pigs, don’t really think i am risking infection as have had covid already myself ( key worker transmission) and the garage is very quiet, but yes sensible suggestion ( theycan just think I am a piglet )

OP, I think sending your son his magazine and some making a point of stopping to buy him a treat is a sweet thing to do and it's become a routine - I actually think the shopkeeper is just getting annoyed with the fact you're not buying any fuel and probably wonders why you can't visit an M&S Foodhall instead - he's just being a grump, ignore him.
Next time, buy enough bags to last until your son moves and send him his weekly parcel without stopping at the petrol station.

Just smile at the person in the garage and thank them for their concern.
It sounds as though the garage worker has their own problems going on.
Sometimes the small things our parents do for us make a massive difference and hopefully you are brightening up your son’s week when they arrive.

If the BMJ is online then send a box of Percy Pigs and job done.

This feels like a Pretty Woman moment waiting to happen. Buy a full carrier bag of Percy Pigs from another M&S then stick your head around the corner of the garage shop and wave them at the proprietor telling him what a big, huge mistake he made in complaining about you.
