Hedge trimming

We have a hedge that goes all the way around the garden. It’s not been trimmed for a couple of years and going to bite the bullet and get some hedge trimmers.

One set of neighbours are shielding and the other set are not very friendly.

Should I knock their doors and ask if they want me to trim their sides or just do my side and the top and leave it their responsibility?

Also never trimmed a hedge before, so might make a pigs ear of it.

just do your side & the top.

I find that a lightweight cordless hedge trimmer is easiest.

Just to mention you should check for nesting birds. I saw in france they were recommending people don't trim hedges/bushes til the end of July for this reason as even cutting a bit can make them vulnerable to predators eg. Magpies.. I found a nesting thrush in my bay tree last year.
You could offer to the neighbours if there's no nests

i just cut myside and the top on my half of the hedge, the neighbours either cut their top half or leave it, not my problem, our neighbours let it grow about 2 foot higher then make a pigs ear of cutting it, but as long as my side is tidy i'm not bothered how theirs looks.
selfish moo i am Smile

pepper birds can still be nesting and fledging through august too. best to leave trimming until the end of the month, as it is illegal to disturb nesting birds, remove eggs or harm them in anyway.

Yes, this really isn't the time of year to be trimming hedges unfortunately because of nesting birds. Needs to be done earlier or later in the year.

Ah ok recycled. In france they said not til the end of july so i thought there must be a good reason for that. Maybe they nest earlier there

I thought this was going to be a question about when beauty salons will be re-opening.
