When the looting starts, the shooting starts.

Can you believe that Trump has just tweeted this comment? He is talking about the protests about George Floyd's death. He has also called the protestors "thugs".

Twitter has put a warning on his twitter post, saying that it "glorifies violence". It is also racist!

The "historical context" is a reference to the late 1960s, when the phrase "when the looting starts, the shooting starts" was coined by Miami Police Chief Walter Headley, in reference to his aggressive policing policies in black neighbourhoods.

'No justice, no peace -- it's not just a protest chant. It's how societies work'.

Just read this on Twitter and totally agree. If they'd arrested those fuckers, none of this would be happening. Do you think they always wait weeks for an autopsy report to charge anyone with murder? No. This is because they are cops.

People have been protesting and using non-violent resistance for years and nothing happens. You can't expect people to put up with brutality and racism forever and just sit quietly and take it, ask politely for people to change. Get real.

Krong · 29/05/2020 11:44

I don't blame the looters. They are angry and tired and nobody in power is doing anything to help them.

They did silent protests, petitions, nobody listened.
They took the knee at national events, and were called anti-patriotic.
They took to twitter to call out police, and were shut down.

How can they make people listen? Where America cares most... profits, shiny super stores, commercialisation.

Do you really think they care anymore about whether it makes them look bad? When they did the right thing, they were made to look bad.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 29/05/2020 11:44

I'll be honest and say I haven't seen the video, the photo was enough. The absolute dear in his eyes has stayed with me for days.

How anyone can look at that footage and say those cops are not guilty is beyond me. They're murderers. They should be charged with murder.

KonTikki · 29/05/2020 11:45

The historical precedent for shooting looters come from WW2, when soldiers caught looting from civilians carried the death penalty.
Looting is a more severe symptom of rioting, and does too easily lead to loss of life and property.
For POTUS to make this comment is crass, but then what's new.
For police to control extreme rioting / looting there are other non lethal methods. In London a few years ago they tried "kettling", a totally non violent peaceful means of crowd control, but that was eventually deemed unlawful by the courts.

Thepilotlightsgoneout · 29/05/2020 11:47

I’m not surprised by anything Trump tweets anymore. I literally don’t think anything he says or does would shock me now, my opinion of him is that low.

MarshaBradyo · 29/05/2020 11:48

The sad part is many will applaud him. He gets worse all the time. But it’s ceasing to be surprising.

Oth
It’s a matter of life and death atm for the persecuted and I’m not surprised they are reacting as they are.

dreamingbohemian · 29/05/2020 11:48

This is the video of the CNN reporter Oscar Jimenez getting arrested live on air:

twitter.com/Sujayanth/status/1266313710441766912

Fucking unbelievable. He's just standing there quietly not doing anything at all and they fucking arrest him. Put him in handcuffs on live TV.

HE is in jail and that murdering cop is not. THAT is why people are rioting.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 29/05/2020 11:48

And this has really made me appreciate the UK police.

They go out each day armed only with their reasoning........yes, they've made fuck ups over the years. They don't always get things right. But in the main they do a damn good job..........and they don't get away with killing people because of the colour of their skin.

Moondust001 · 29/05/2020 11:49

@astrogirl99

Seriously? You make valid points about double standards. But there is nothing conscious, rational or informed about mindless violence and destruction - whoever does it. Trying to slam down on debate by calling anyone who thinks otherwise a racist is ridiculous.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 29/05/2020 11:49

Because kettling is bloody dangerous. Have you ever been kettled?

How disgusting when property is deemed more important than lives.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/05/2020 11:52

Those doing this are not "angry at injustice" - they are thugs exploiting the situation for their own ends. They demean the real purpose of protest and contribute to the reasons why nothing changes

Very well said, Moondust. Nobody in their right mind would suggest the looters somehow deserve to die any more than George Floyd did, but their actions are helping precisely nobody

BTW at least one of the looted stores belongs to a black guy ... I wonder if they knew about that, and if so whether they cared

x2boys · 29/05/2020 11:52

@dreamingbohemian,they have made the point on CNN just now that Omar,Jimenez is not white and another reporter who has,nt been arrested is

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 29/05/2020 11:55

Have you ever been kettled?

I stopped attending protests when they brought in kettling. It achieved it's objective, which was to shut down legal protests. This might work in the short term to suppress dissent. It will eventually backfire, when people are denied the right to lawful, peaceful protest, what will happen?

CaraDune · 29/05/2020 11:57

Holy shit, dreaming, that video! That is terrifying.

Annamaria14 · 29/05/2020 11:58

Isn't it interesting that the CNN reporter that was arrested at the scene, was not white.

They really see non white people as worth less than animals.

That arrest of the CNN reporter has also highlighted the racism there.

OP posts:
TinklyLittleLaugh · 29/05/2020 11:59

Agree Scrimp No way is kettling non violent and peaceful. It's very scary.

dreamingbohemian · 29/05/2020 12:01

Right Cara? Unbelievable.

x2boys I also read that. Leaving white reporters alone, arresting the one who is a POC. Notice they also didn't arrest his white crew.

dreamingbohemian · 29/05/2020 12:03

Exactly Annamaria they are not even trying to hide it.

B1rdbra1n · 29/05/2020 12:03

Completely horrifying

x2boys · 29/05/2020 12:05

And yet the officer who killed George Floyd is still free but a reporter who was peacefully and legally doing his job has been arrested its unbelievable .

B1rdbra1n · 29/05/2020 12:06

I'm also very glad that we have policing by consent and the police not routinely armed.
I'm not saying it's perfect but in many ways we are very lucky with our police force 🙏

SonjaMorgan · 29/05/2020 12:06

Peaceful protests for black lives hasn't got Americans anywhere. You should aim your disgust at those who have made peaceful protests impossible.

"But it is not enough for me to stand before you tonight and condemn riots. It would be morally irresponsible for me to do that without, at the same time, condemning the contingent, intolerable conditions that exist in our society. These conditions are the things that cause individuals to feel that they have no other alternative than to engage in violent rebellions to get attention. And I must say tonight that a riot is the language of the unheard. And what is it America has failed to hear? It has failed to hear that the plight of the negro poor has worsened over the last twelve or fifteen years. It has failed to hear that the promises of freedom and justice have not been met. And it has failed to hear that large segments of white society are more concerned about tranquility and the status quo than about justice and humanity."
Martin Luther King Jr.

Hanamuslim · 29/05/2020 12:06

He can never be a real, professional person or president. His idea to make America great again is to get rid of people of colour. So his dream has come true. Shoot any black that loots and that's solving his horrible idea of a problem.

Yes, looting is a crime. But come on 2011, we had the riots in London, I can't recall our pm saying let's shoot them.

He is a disgusting example of a country leader. He's probably the one also arranging for all the police to stand guard of the murdering cops House as well.
Absolutely madness. So glad I don't live in America

MarshaBradyo · 29/05/2020 12:07

That CNN footage is crazy. Actually moved me to tears. So intense

B1rdbra1n · 29/05/2020 12:07

In the middle of a pandemic that vile man is stirring up chaos and violence
