When the looting starts, the shooting starts.

Can you believe that Trump has just tweeted this comment? He is talking about the protests about George Floyd's death. He has also called the protestors "thugs".

Twitter has put a warning on his twitter post, saying that it "glorifies violence". It is also racist!

The "historical context" is a reference to the late 1960s, when the phrase "when the looting starts, the shooting starts" was coined by Miami Police Chief Walter Headley, in reference to his aggressive policing policies in black neighbourhoods.

Have a think about why Black people are called looters while Hong Kong folk doing the same thing a few weeks ago were called democracy protestors. It’s fucking disgusting. What’s playing out in US cities is an organised protest targeting non-Black owned, exploitative businesses in the area, and institutions of the racist police state

Maybe because they didn’t burn down things like a public library and grocery stores. Y’all going to complain about food deserts but who’s going to open stores in their neighborhood now? Insurance doesn’t cover riot damage usually, so they’ll be at a total loss. A lot of black-owned businesses were looted too, how are they going to start over? Especially after being closed for several months.

Note they also burned down an apartment complex that was going to be an affordable housing unit. They are hurting themselves — no, they are hurting their innocent neighbors, it’s sickening.

The issue of police brutality is getting overlooked because of their awful behavior. Even Floyd’s family have asked them to stop, but they’ve gone against the family’s wishes.

Remember that Justine Damond, a white Australian woman, was shot and killed by an officer from this very same police department. It took eight months for the investigation to conclude, and the officer in question was on paid leave. It took years to get a conviction. The wheels of justice turn slowly, but he was eventually jailed. It will happen here too.

Chauvin charged with 3rd degree murder and manslaughter.

PicsInRed · 29/05/2020 19:49

Hmmmm, let's see, Hong Kong protestors occupied and trashed an enormous university, a shopping mall, the government building and the entire CBD. Granted, they did have teams of people cleaning up, but Black people have also been cleaning up afterwards.

Maybe it's really the obvious reason. They're Black and some folks just don't like that. Hmm

PlantPottingPlantPotting · 29/05/2020 19:49

Third degree murder? Wow!! When you perform an act that restricts something airway for 8 minutes. What did he think the outcome would be. This is truly disgusting

FOJN · 29/05/2020 19:53

PlantPottingPlantPotting
I agree, I was just looking up the difference. There were several minutes of premeditation as you said. They haven't arrested the other officers, he's going to get away with it, isn't he.

PlantPottingPlantPotting · 29/05/2020 19:55

If anybody isn’t aware of Derek Chauvin’s past, 10 years ago he shot another black man twice & beat him when the man was unarmed

HelloToMyKitty · 29/05/2020 19:55

Just to underscore that it was not just big corporations getting looted; this black man poured his life savings into a sports bar and it’s just destroyed. His is not the only minority-owned business that was looted and destroyed.

Fair enough. Over a period of months there were some arson incidents and broken windows. But I never saw an entire store trashed with looters taking out whatever they could carry. They don’t care about BLM, they are pure opportunists and really hurting the cause

HelloToMyKitty · 29/05/2020 20:11

Funny how it only took 8 months for a black man to be convicted of a white woman's murders whilst so many other black families still wait for any justice at all

Not convicted. He shot her in 2017 and wasn’t arrested until 2018 and not convicted until 2019. The investigation took eight months, I think. So it took several years to get a conviction.

PlantPottingPlantPotting · 29/05/2020 20:12

@FOJN I truly hope he doesn’t get away with it but, baring in mind a lot of people are offered plea deals at a lesser charge, the chances are he may come out with only manslaughter. I’ve no words left for what a disgusting human being he is.

AKissAndASmile · 29/05/2020 20:18

@HelloToMyKitty you're an apologist for a racist murderer.

MartySouth · 29/05/2020 20:20

USA. The world is laughing in horror. Your country is seen as indecent and uncivilised. Forget about how we all loved MacDonald's, Hollywood, Friends and Woody Allen. That's finished. We are recoiling now.

Yes I know you individually perhaps did not vote for him but take a minute to think about how the rest of the world sees you. Do you remember the idea that all it takes for evil to flourish is good people doing nothing? That's not history or fiction or science fiction it's now, today. It's YOU.

HelloToMyKitty · 29/05/2020 20:22

you're an apologist for a racist murderer

How? I believe he should stand trial and hope that he gets booked. Nothing I’ve said suggests otherwise. But it doesn’t happen overnight.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/05/2020 20:22

they also burned down an apartment complex that was going to be affordable housing

Actually we were told upthread that it's been proved it was a police officer who was setting fires at the housing unit. Several have asked for a link to this proof, but so far it's not been forthcoming

Like yourself I also mentioned the businesses owned by black people who've suffered so badly from the disorder, but that wasn't commented on either - which seems a bit odd, when you'd think folk would be concerned about everyone in that community

How many white policemen havd been convicted of the murder of black menHello. Why pick out this conviction?

I pick it out because it was the same MPD police department and the policeman in question did eventually get convicted, after a very long process.

Don’t forget that guy was placed on paid administrative leave and only resigned from the force upon arrest. So things have already improved in that these officers were directly fired and I believe the one who did the killing is now charged.

HorsesInTheSky · 29/05/2020 20:29

These posts are mostly ignored because it's such a complex issue and bringing it up is such a common tactic used to undermine and/or draw attention away from the underlying cause of a protest/riot.

What do you want people to say? It's awful that even more people's lives are being destroyed by systemic oppression and inequality. Of course it is.

Disenfranchised people who feel they have nothing to lose are the most dangerous to the authorities - when the authorities are engineering inequality and racism in the States for political posturing and people feel like cannon fodder I don't blame them for showing force

But they are taking out their anger on their neighbors (though tbh I don’t think it’s protestors doing this, obviously these are opportunists who don’t care).

How is justice served by looting and burning down small businesses, many of them black- and immigrant-owned? Even things like Auto Zone and Wendy’s would be a franchise owned by a local. And they’ve already had a rough few months ....

x2boys · 29/05/2020 20:35

How does it in America?whilst I think it should be more than third degree murder and manslaughter ,are they trying to secure a conviction?I assume that if it was first degree murder the prosecution would have to prove intent ,if they couldn't prove it would that mean Derek Chauvin would walk free?

HelloToMyKitty · 29/05/2020 20:37

Hello things have improved? I fail to see how your comments show that in any way. And again you picked the black on white police killing. Nice deflection/plant

Did you not read a word I wrote?

First, it was the SAME police department.

Second, the shooter of Justine was put on paid leave. The killer cops here were fired pretty immediately.

Third, it took around eight months to get Justine’s killer charged. Two years for a conviction. Chauvin just got charged within the week so already it will be faster to get a conviction.

I’d say that is a huge improvement, actually.

You don’t think the fact that this murder was available ON FILM might have influenced things a little?
