Is the clapping still going on in anybody else’s neighbourhood?

Seems we are the only house on the terrace that hasn’t done it tonight. We did it the first couple of times but have stopped as it seems to be all about who can make the loudest noise.

Some bloke and his child shouting at everybody to clap louder, some woman brought a bloody stereo out and was playing disco music. It’s still going on now. A tram track runs next to our road and a tram came down and the driver pressed the horn, I assume as an attempt to join in (we’re right at the end of the route where there is only one tram around at any given time, the horn is never usually used).

AIBU to think people have forgotten what it was for and now it’s all gone a bit fucking daft?

Hardly anyone came out tonight - 3 households rather than 30 odd. They carried on for about 5 minutes though,

PiggyPlumPie · 28/05/2020 21:23

@ScarfLadysBag yep!!!

ScarfLadysBag · 28/05/2020 21:25

Small world!

Redcrayons · 28/05/2020 21:28

Last one for us tonight. It’s been quite nice is all being out at the same time having a chat. I’ll miss that bit.

Destroyedpeople · 28/05/2020 21:32

No just a bit of light clapping from one house opposite. I peeped out at them while I was watering my plants.

Mummyshark2019 · 28/05/2020 21:37

Wetting myself at the "come on, let's have you". What a nutter. Yes, they are still clapping and making noise and people are singing too now as well.

SparklingLime · 28/05/2020 21:40

Think this is much more effective now... Doctors Not Martyrs - standing at the gates of Downing Street for 237 minutes to mark the deaths of 237 healthcare workers:

We have bagpipers where we are, but i didnt clap, haven't since the first time and tonight I was sitting in the garden with my wee cat and didn't want to give her a fright.

Destroyedpeople · 28/05/2020 21:40

If anyone shouted 'let's have you ' outside my house I would be sorely tempted to chuck a wet tea bag at them.

Destroyedpeople · 28/05/2020 21:42

You know what we should do is stand outside parliament and rattle our keys like they did in Prague in 89. Wouldn't work though you would get rent a mob show up.

Raaaa · 28/05/2020 21:45

Yes and fireworks so cringey

Squirrelblanket · 28/05/2020 21:47

Yes but hopefully tonight we've seen (and heard) the last of it.

creativecringe · 28/05/2020 21:49

My area gets louder and louder including the church bell. I hope it continues. It has been really fun

Hysteriawhenyourenear · 28/05/2020 21:54

@MadameMarie

There's a woman every week a few doors down who walks up and down the street shouting "Come on let's have you!" over and over. It actually puts people off going out and clapping. I wish she'd stop.
Is it Delia smith?
HazelBite · 28/05/2020 21:55

The first week as I was the only one in my road clapping, and consequently felt a bit of an idiot, I've not done it since!

PorpentiaScamander · 28/05/2020 21:55

Ours was the loudest they've ever been but I assume because its the last one thank fuck

Cinderella66 · 28/05/2020 22:00

Not one person in our road.

slipperywhensparticus · 28/05/2020 22:15

Ours was a bit quiet tonight huge explosion about ten minutes before took the edge off judging by the screams and yells someone set a firework off in their garden

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 28/05/2020 22:20

Still going on here. Remains quite fun on our street - developed a more carnival atmosphere as opposed to the original quite somber clapping. The neighbours have bonded quite a bit through this experience though.

I do like it when people refer to it as “the clap” rather than “clapping” though. Adds an element of class I feel Grin

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 28/05/2020 22:24

Absolutely loads.

Clapping, fireworks, cars beeping their horns, doggos barking...

(Local doggos love the NHS, apparently.)

Now you mention it I didn't hear any clapping tonight. We had the windows open so I think I would have done.

OverTheRainbowLiesOz · 28/05/2020 22:54

We happened to half way through our walk tonight when the clapping started. Water bottle in one hand, other stuff in the other hand, happily walking and minding our own business. A man shouted from his doorstep that we should clap as we may need help one day.

I'm getting pretty fed up with the holier than thou judgy stuff.

crosstalk · 28/05/2020 22:59

Clapping and saucepan banging here in the East for NHS and carers. There's a carer here who appreciates it. I'm sure the local frontline staff in hospitals and homes aren't too worried if it stops. I was also clapping for all the supermarket staff, lorry drivers and everyone who's kept on working - including farmers - so we can keep going.

Hagisonthehill · 28/05/2020 23:04

According to DD it did again tonight.I missed it again as I was driving home.(and thankfully missed the intensely embarrassing ambulances with blue flashing lights and them and police clapping.

Precovid those ambulances would have been queued up outside A&E.
