Is the clapping still going on in anybody else’s neighbourhood?

Seems we are the only house on the terrace that hasn’t done it tonight. We did it the first couple of times but have stopped as it seems to be all about who can make the loudest noise.

Some bloke and his child shouting at everybody to clap louder, some woman brought a bloody stereo out and was playing disco music. It’s still going on now. A tram track runs next to our road and a tram came down and the driver pressed the horn, I assume as an attempt to join in (we’re right at the end of the route where there is only one tram around at any given time, the horn is never usually used).

AIBU to think people have forgotten what it was for and now it’s all gone a bit fucking daft?

No although the twazzocks next door are having their weekly, garden party where they invite a load of friends and family round to set off fireworks and cheer and clap at 8pm then continue the party till late.

PolkaDotsPolka · 28/05/2020 20:39

People opposite us were keeping off industrial sized fireworks in the middle of the road.
Pretty much all the neighbors have been having multiple visitors so seems very hypocritical.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 28/05/2020 20:39

I saw the role call on fb which always asks people to post which streets have been making a noise with the clapping and pot banging and car horns.

I don't know who might have been here, but when I put my head out the front door at 4 minutes past it was already quiet, whereas other weeks it's seemes to go on for ages!

DH has been going to work throughout, but not a key worker (except in his boss's eyes).

Of our NHS friends, some like it, some dislike it and one is happy to receive the free flowers and the designated hours at the supermarket, feel we are clapping for them and yet put their foot right down about being redeployed back to the wards - and they've come through Covid easily and can't (probably) now get it.

DominaShantotto · 28/05/2020 20:45

Hasn't been a clap for weeks here - it was fireworks till the light nights kicked in (and they ran out) and now it's just bloody car horns either blaring continuously for a good 2 minutes+ or doing a call and response thing with other car horns beeping rhythms.

I've never done it - been upstairs trying to comfort distressed kids who aren't sleeping well with the whole way their world's changed - and then the neighbours started slagging us off outside (windows open cos of the heat so of course I heard) for not joining in and now it's personal as fuck and I won't do it.

ScarfLadysBag · 28/05/2020 20:47

We are watching the convoy of lorries and emergency service vehicles going through our village tonight. It's quite nice, lovely weather and all the kids and neighbours are out. It's a nice atmosphere.

Kept DD up specially and she loved it. Nice ending to it all!

Chicchicchicchiclana · 28/05/2020 20:48

Yes, perhaps a bit noisier and more enthusiastic here in our London suburb to mark the last one for now.

PiggyPlumPie · 28/05/2020 20:48

Not many clappers but for the second week running a convoy of lorries, tractors, delivery drivers, ambulance, fire engine and random cars drove around the village beeping. It's just finished.

And a lone woman wandering around with her bagpipes. Poor cat was terrified!

MarkBrendanawicz · 28/05/2020 20:49

Yes and some fucking twat let off massive fireworks this evening whilst I was out walking my dog who subsequently nearly pooped himself.

It was stupid to start with and it's just fucking annoying now.

19lottie82 · 28/05/2020 20:49

To me it just seems a bit hypocritical if those clapping haven’t made the effort to actually improve the working conditions / wages of NHS workers.

Or if they have been “popping round to see their sister” Etc during lockdown!

PilatesPeach · 28/05/2020 20:51

yep still going here including the weekly saxophone concert, not just one song together with clapping & pots & pans (I'm inside appreciating the care workers myself)

joystir59 · 28/05/2020 20:52

Never did it and can't stand the clapping pot banging and effing fireworks. Glad it's over. Absolutely love the NHS and think it deserves to be properly funded and that people should have way more respect for it than they do. Clapping is so patronising

Comefromaway · 28/05/2020 20:52

Tonight was the last. We played and sang a song (ds set up the most complicated two keyboard set up ever but our next doo neighbour decided that as tonight was the last one our amp wasn't big enough and brought out a massive one (he works for a musical instrument manufacturer)!

It was a good turnout but I feel the time is right to stop now.

Alsohuman · 28/05/2020 20:53

Last time tonight. We’re a bit sad, it’s brought all our neighbours out for a quick chat. Now we probably won’t see each other as much. It was lovely to start with but it got out of hand in some places.

LizzieLoafer · 28/05/2020 20:53

Noisier than ever here tonight. Usual lots of fireworks and pan banging. But additional car horns going like madAngry.

ScarfLadysBag · 28/05/2020 20:53

@PiggyPlumPie I wonder if we live in the same village!

caperberries · 28/05/2020 20:54

Yes, all our neighbours have been doing it, it's sad that tonight is the last one

BackInTime · 28/05/2020 20:55

More of a party in our street, clapping, fireworks, drum banging, loud music. Didn't sit right with me that people are celebrating given the the numbers that have died and continue to die, the highest number of deaths in Europe and a government in chaos. I have family that are in the health and emergency services and they feel the same way. We have just sleepwalked in social compliance and the government are loving it. It was a nice gesture of support at first but it shouldn't be a reason to party it's just wrong.

PiggyPlumPie · 28/05/2020 20:56

NE Scotland @ScarfLadysBag

ScarfLadysBag · 28/05/2020 20:56

@PiggyPlumPie Yep. Begins with L?

PearsMorgan · 28/05/2020 20:59

Yes. I went for a walk and got caught in the open. I don’t know what fucking day it is any more.

SecretSpAD · 28/05/2020 20:59

Yes last one tonight so maybe people are making a final show of support

Is it? Thank fuck for that. We've had notes through our door each week telling us how unneighbourly we were and then shamed on the local Facebook pages.

We just don't want to do this, never wanted too and out teenage niece and nephew who we have custody of are particularly angry as their mother died due to the neglect of the NHS so it's been a massive slap in their faces.

Dylaninthemovies1 · 28/05/2020 21:01

Yes, but everyone mentioned it was the last week of it. My 4 year old will be gutted: it’s the highlight of his week (probably as he gets to stay up “late” for it)

MulberryPeony · 28/05/2020 21:11

Yes but I think tonight’s our last one and a neighbour mentioned it was their last one too.

DateLoaf · 28/05/2020 21:13

Yes, all our neighbours have been doing it, all the kids want to carry it on. it’s been a lovely thing and has led to them thanking all kinds of workers- delivery drivers, rubbish collectors and our post woman.

Another one here whose been failed by the NHS...never has sat right with me.

It’s in the name, national health service ffs. It’s not a charity. It’s not run by hero’s, it needs a bloody good overhaul and the staff need a bloody good pay rise
