Is the clapping still going on in anybody else’s neighbourhood?

Seems we are the only house on the terrace that hasn’t done it tonight. We did it the first couple of times but have stopped as it seems to be all about who can make the loudest noise.

Some bloke and his child shouting at everybody to clap louder, some woman brought a bloody stereo out and was playing disco music. It’s still going on now. A tram track runs next to our road and a tram came down and the driver pressed the horn, I assume as an attempt to join in (we’re right at the end of the route where there is only one tram around at any given time, the horn is never usually used).

AIBU to think people have forgotten what it was for and now it’s all gone a bit fucking daft?

Urgh.
Louder here tonight than normal

lachy · 28/05/2020 20:17

DH left for work just as it started. DD thought they were clapping for him so we hung out of the window and clapped. Its only the second time I've done it.

letmethinkaboutitfornow · 28/05/2020 20:18

NOOO!!! Finally they finished with it! Grin

BirdieFriendReturns · 28/05/2020 20:19

I live on a military base and nobody claps. The armed forces personnel you see on the news are forced to clap. DH had to do one week and they all looked very miserable and half-hearted.

tigerbear · 28/05/2020 20:20

Just realised that it’s Thursday!
Nobody at all clapped here tonight, first time that’s happened!

Crispsnatcher · 28/05/2020 20:20

They clapped on my street tonight.

LakieLady · 28/05/2020 20:21

@Puddlesplasher, so you have pavement sitters too!

What is this strange trend?

Darbs76 · 28/05/2020 20:23

I’ve been clapping all along and heard tonight was the final one. We have a really good turnout and a trumpet player, but my daughter and I said that’s the last.

Jayaywhynot · 28/05/2020 20:24

We clapped but only because my elderly neighbours come out every week and they look for us and wave and clap. I would be happy to stop but dont want to let my neighbours down

MrAlyhakinsMassiveYacht · 28/05/2020 20:24

Clapping, pan banging and some idiot let off a firework. Is this it now?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 28/05/2020 20:25

Loads here, plus fireworks which I haven’t heard before.

NutellaOnButteryToast · 28/05/2020 20:25

" let's have you " ?! Bit aggressive isn't it?..

Over the past 2 weeks it's definitely got quieter on our road. Only 3 houses out, instead of the usual 7 or 8 and I have to say, the clapping is a lot less enthusiastic. To the point it almost felt sarcastic Confused

Idododoidadada · 28/05/2020 20:26

This is the last clap.
This is the only one where I have heard anyone in the neighbourhood.
Clapping, banging, clanking and looooooong horn blasts from people driving down the road at the end of the street.

Puddlesplasher · 28/05/2020 20:27

@LakieLady - today it was just the children who were quite literally sat on the pavement - no chairs. However since lockdown started all the lower end of our street are out with their chairs and shouting across the road at each other at least once a week. One of them even had his barbecue out on the drive at the weekend.

Ellmau · 28/05/2020 20:27

We don't have it every week, but we did tonight.

My dad does it, apparently, but my mum stopped when they started the repeats of Pride and Prejudice at the same time.

Needamanicure · 28/05/2020 20:27

Not in our area. It tailed off.

Thankfully the local hospital had very few cases and so very little to do.

CatsOfSummer · 28/05/2020 20:27

Clapping and pan banging round here - we did get one neighbour patrolling the street for a while to see if people were out but we stopped after the first couple so I don’t know if she still does

vodkaredbullgirl · 28/05/2020 20:28

yes, sets the dogs off barking

BobbinThreadbare123 · 28/05/2020 20:28

Yep, still clapping - including my hypocrite neighbours who haven't stopped having people round during lockdown

clackymules · 28/05/2020 20:32

The women across the road who like banging saucepans were absent this week. However, still people clapping, and a new entry - someone ringing a bell, like they were trying to get kids in from the playground at the end of break. Then it went quiet, and my next door neighbour rushed out and started frantically hitting a saucepan because clearly they'd forgotten but wanted to participate even though everyone else had finished and gone back in.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 28/05/2020 20:32

What a bunch of fucking miseries

verybritishproblems · 28/05/2020 20:32

Probably because they put their lives on the line everyday too but who is clapping for them?

clackymules · 28/05/2020 20:33

Oh yes, the frantic saucepan-hitting neighbour has also regularly been having their children and grandchildren round... Hmm

HereComesSimon · 28/05/2020 20:33

Very quiet here

verybritishproblems · 28/05/2020 20:34

The only people out clapping every week around here are the ones who are already a step ahead of Monday’s new rules. Been doing it since the start the have Angry
