15 years ago when I was 20 I stupidly agreed to an interview with a newspaper, not a well known one, about something in my life I’d rather my D.C. never knew about, it’s nothing silly, actually quite sad, personal and serious. I again stupidly gave my real name and town.

I now go by my married name but my maiden name was unusual and one search and this comes up. I’ve contacted the editor several times over the years to ask him to change my name and he point blanks refuses.

My kids are becoming more internet savvy and the idea of them finding the article is something that keeps me awake at night.

Aibu? What can I do?

Think you need to use this. The right to be forgotten

Isn't there a right to be forgotten now so that ones name/story doesn't turn up in search results?

This one explains how to do it

There are people you can hire to help get it further buried down the search engine results.

Thanks guys. I’m just so upset that the editor doesn’t care at all. I’m sure it would be really easy just to change my name.

Google right to be forgotten is likely to be far quicker.

Bibijayne · 28/05/2020 20:16

@lljkk isn't that what Cummings did for BoJo?

RuffleCrow · 28/05/2020 20:19

I'm pleased there's hopefully a solution for you op, but also slightly concerned about all the criminals and unsavoury characters who could abuse this right. And probably already have.

You used to easily be able to find Melania Trump's soft porn images, and now they are quite buried on Google. Buried but not gone...

Not advocating the above company
