To think there's going to need to be a grace period on any Mot changes?

My car was due last week but is technically okay due to the extension. However my trusted garage is still closed, as are most where I live.

Just read that the government are thinking about stopping the six month extension which means many cars will be out of a valid MOT.

What are people meant to do though if the garages aren't open? There is going to a huge rush for the garages that are open... Surely the government is going to have to give warning of the scheme stopping so people can arrange something?

(my car will be booked in ASAP but it honestly depends on when the garage opens.)

I had no trouble getting mine in. They’re less busy than usual. Plus most business will start relaxing from June 1st and reopen.

Mine was due mid june. Got it done yesterday after booking it in last week.
They can rescind the new rules with no notice so i wasnt going to take the risk. Also we have another car that gets done in november so i cant afford them to be due at the same time!!

My Mot is due now and so decided I wasn't going to risk the government rescinding the extension and got it done today. Word of warning for everyone! The usual places I would have used aren't open so I booked a service and Mot on an offer rate at a garage I had never used before thinking I just wanted it done. My very low mileage 4 year old car failed and now I have to pay £250 to fix the 'fault' and then pay for a re-test.

Yep, most garages are open. After all, if bike shops are essential, necessary repairs to cars (especially those belonging to key workers) most definitely are.

I got the impression that the idea of the MoT extensions was partly to help people who were self-isolating or shielding, and so couldn't get out to the garage, and also to avoid key workers struggling to get their cars in for emergency repairs because the garages were booked up with people having routine non-urgent checks done - and to enable them to prioritise getting to and from work if they found themselves working lots of extra shifts over having to get their own cars in for tests and then not having them available for use.

I agree that the principle of MoTs is important, but going on the way some people seem to think, you'd expect that an MoT'd car was guaranteed to be in perfect roadworthy condition for twelve months, regardless of what might have happened to it in the meantime, but then would automatically turn into a guaranteed death trap the moment the 13th month arrives.

Mine was extended to December so I've rebooked the MOT for mid-july.

They'd better not change the date back again. I'm avoiding people for a few more weeks yet.

The garage we use has been open throughout- DS had to get new brake discs a few weeks ago (he's a keyworker). They recommended leaving the MOT though (was due last week) to game the system and get more months - so I suspect if the rules are rescinded they will be really busy with people they had advised to delay. We are booked in for Tuesday.

Am I missing something, or is this going to have the knock-on effect that a disproportionately large amount of cars will be needing MoTs in the Winter months (obviously including the Christmas period) every year, rather than spread evenly throughout the year, and thus causing peaks and troughs for garages for years to come?

I presume your next full MoT year will reset after the new extended due date and they won't be expecting you to have another test again in six months' time?

Probably. Unless they bring the dates back in line again. Mine was due this month, has been extended to December but I'm doing it in July.

Mine was due in March, extended to October but was done on Tuesday and is now valid until next May. I'm thinking of it as 2 months free rather than 4 months lost!

I work for a dealership and peak times are March and September
We are reopening and snowed under. Best time is to leave it for maybe a couple of months and book for July or start of August

Hi, it's an extension of your current date and it won't be "taken back" so to speak. If u our mot date has passed you MOT expiry date is now 6 months from the original date. You can check this for sure on the gov website www.gov.uk/check-mot-status

As above. They aren't going to take the extension back from cars that already have it.
