To not go straight "back to normal"

loppylop · 28/05/2020 15:24

This is not a scaremongering thread, I'm low risk so not overly scared of Covid.
However I will be restricting leisure activities in terms of going out to eat (will do takeaway), flying abroad, shopping (stick to online). Id rather I could do all these things however I want some normality back & am desperate to see family & friends. By avoiding certain activities & prioritising others, taking it slower will I limit how many times I have self isolate!

I will be keeping my distance as much as possible going forward when places start opening. I have asthma which puts me at increased risk.

EnlightenedOwl · 28/05/2020 15:27

Well you'll have to sometime

Drivingdownthe101 · 28/05/2020 15:27

Why would that be unreasonable? You’re free to do as you wish in terms of leisure activities.

loppylop · 28/05/2020 15:31

Well I feel like I should be doing those things to help the economy.

It's the fear of repeatingly having to wfh, take the kids out of school, etc & self isolate for 14 days as opposed to a fear of Covid.

I feel the same. I won't be rushing to the shops when they open and will not be flying for the foreseeable. I might ask my hairdresser to come at the beginning of July but will see what happens in the meantime. Won't be rushing to the gym or crowded events either.

Strugglingtodomybest · 28/05/2020 15:32

YANBU, take as long as you need.

Redwren · 28/05/2020 15:32

I'll visit the garden centre this week and will get my hair cut as soon as I can but that will be it for a long time. I was never a huge shopper but would go to our local shopping centre maybe 6 times a year. I'll avoid it for ages. I'd like to do park run again but again I'll be waiting a while after it restarts. I miss going for lunch with my friends but hopefully we can take turns in providing lunch at each others houses instead of a cafe. I haven't stopped having a monthly takeaway during lockdown and while I'd love a pub dinner I'll be waiting a while

AnnaNimmity · 28/05/2020 15:33

You can do what's right for you. For me, I'll be queuing up outside that hairdresser, can't wait to browse in shops, sit in cafes and have a drink in a pub with a friend. and I will be booking a flight to go on holiday asap.

safariboot · 28/05/2020 15:35

YANBU.

Covid-19 hasn't gone away and there haven't been any headline breakthroughs in treatment. It can be a very nasty disease.

With the upcoming advice to isolate if you've had close contact with someone who tests positive, it makes sense to try and reduce close contact.

blue25 · 28/05/2020 15:35

Same. Shops/airports/restaurants/crowded beaches hold no attraction for me at the moment. Planning a summer in the garden (weather permitting)

Redwren · 28/05/2020 15:36

In fact I'm hoping this will be a new normal for us, weve loved it so far and will definitely be cutting down on how often we are out and about

loppylop · 28/05/2020 15:37

@annanimmity are you not bothered about having to self isolate if you happen to have contact with someone else?

Dondevastu · 28/05/2020 15:38

I feel the same but tbh it's more because I've found I dont actually miss doing any of that stuff..its nice to be able to go out to dinner and everything, sure. But am I dying to get back to it? Nope.
One thing to come out of this is that it's made me realise I dont NEED to do any of it like I thought I did.
I do miss the gym very badly however and i will be going back asap..I've gained 5kg already despite working out at home 5 days a week.

loppylop · 28/05/2020 15:40

I won't go back to the gym, now have a cross trainer & online stuff.

Desperate for a cut & colour though.

I can wait to go back to the office & would like the kids to be back in school.

This sounds very strategic, good thinking.
I am very high risk so my summer will be spent in the garden with a few people visiting at a time and social distancing while they do.
But if I could be meeting up for walks, picnics, bbqs etc with larger groups of my family and friends I would definitely be willing to avoid prolonged periods of time indoors with strangers so that I could keep seeing the people who matter.

3cats · 28/05/2020 15:45

I was just discussing this with my parents who are both high risk. I don't feel that coronavirus is totally under control yet in the UK, so a second wave seems likely. I think it's better to take things slowly.

hardboiledeggs · 28/05/2020 15:46

I honestly wont go 100% back to normal. I will likely avoid certain places for a while longer just to be on the safe side.

BissueTox · 28/05/2020 15:47

My friends and I are pretty much of the same mind that we won't be rushing out to shops and restaurants immediately. I've missed seeing my friends in person (more than mooching around shops) popping round for a cuppa, dropping a book off etc.

Drivingdownthe101 · 28/05/2020 15:50

Well I can’t be arsed with the aggro of queueing 2m apart etc for shopping so I won’t be bothering with non essential shops for the foreseeable. Too much hassle. Same with bars and restaurants really... if it’s a crap experience due to social distancing I won’t bother. I go to restaurants for a relaxed experience, not to stress about inadvertently getting closer than 2m to someone. So I’m happy to wait until social distancing is dropped.

AnnaNimmity · 28/05/2020 15:51

I'm willing to take that risk @loppylop - I'm not going to be stupid, but I think the risk to me is miniscule and it's easy (in practical terms) for me to self isolate if I have to. I'm happy to self isolate if I go on holiday.

ILickSoap · 28/05/2020 15:52

I will be carrying on as I am, isolating really. I do not go out shopping or to restaurants. I will not be ordering takeaways or anything online. I do not work due to ill health. I never go out really, just to drs appointments, etc which are not going ahead anyway, even had to resort to buying a syringe off the internet and doing my own B12 injection Hmm

The only major change for me is that I will not be going abroad this year, not until there is a vaccine.

CocoR · 28/05/2020 15:55

I will be straight in the beer garden as soon as our local opens!

BogRollBOGOF · 28/05/2020 15:56

I'm not going to be the first in the queue for anything, but I don't love queues and crowds and like the freedom to do things spontaneously.

There's nothing I desperately need from town, I can cut my own hair. DC and pubs don't mix brilliantly (although in this sunshine, beer gardens do appeal)

Services do need to reopen to support business and meet people's needs, but I'll let more enthusiastic people go first.

TakemetoGreeceplease · 28/05/2020 15:58

Well you'll have to sometime

No one has to fly, eat out or go to the gym though do they? Like a lot of people my normal doesn't really include holidays, gyms and restaraunts so I'll be going to back to my normal which isn't too different from lockdown! Just start seeing friends and family again in gardens instead of houses. I won't be rushing to the shops and will continue to shop online. I can't afford unpaid time off work so will be keeping my social circle small.

MorrisZapp · 28/05/2020 15:59

It's not possible to go back to normal, nor will it be for quite some time. Social distancing will make loads of ordinary things far from normal.

May I ask who has made you feel you should fly abroad?
