To not go straight "back to normal"

loppylop · 28/05/2020 15:24

This is not a scaremongering thread, I'm low risk so not overly scared of Covid.
However I will be restricting leisure activities in terms of going out to eat (will do takeaway), flying abroad, shopping (stick to online). Id rather I could do all these things however I want some normality back & am desperate to see family & friends. By avoiding certain activities & prioritising others, taking it slower will I limit how many times I have self isolate!

I don’t feel any pressure to do any of those things to keep the economy going though. I reckon I’ve done my bit for the economy in lockdown with all the stuff I’ve been buying to keep us all amused!

loppylop · 28/05/2020 16:06

May I ask who has made you feel you should fly abroad?

I've been listening to the radio & all the people who are at risk of losing their jobs & feel bad. Plus I've seen lots of posts on here with people saying they will fly as soon as able so Im not sure if i'm overreacting. Don't get me wrong I would love to fly for a holiday but if that means I'm risking the chance of having to self isolate I would rather not & stick to my small bubble.

I’d be happy to self isolate for 2 weeks after visiting the in laws in Spain for 2 weeks. It would be worth the risk for me.

1990shopefulftm · 28/05/2020 16:12

I won't be going back to normal for a while , I m pregnant and asthmatic so I ll carry on buying things online and getting deliveries.
I don't fancy queuing outside shops for a while anyway with my joints and certainly not wanting to be anywhere with a lot of people for a while.

loppylop · 28/05/2020 16:17

I can't afford unpaid time off work so will be keeping my social circle small.

This is a very good point as I'm sure if I'm ill it will be stat sick pay.

OP posts:
Fluffybutter · 28/05/2020 16:18

Do whatever you like .
If you feel that’s the best way for you then yanbu.
I will be trying to get back to normal and will eat out etc.. and I’m still planning on going on my holiday in August if it’s not cancelled

loppylop · 28/05/2020 16:19

Plus what happens to people who can't wfh but need to self isolate but are not ill? Unpaid leave?

OP posts:
ILickSoap · 28/05/2020 16:23

Dunno, its a nightmare. Luckily I gave up work (NHS) just before this pandemic, bloody lucky move there for me. I just thank my lucky stars every day that I have been able to stay safe at home all this time.

loppylop · 28/05/2020 16:23

@Fluffybutter so will you self isolate before your holiday?

OP posts:
Khione · 28/05/2020 16:25

Apart from flying back from abroad you will only have to self isolate if you spend around 15 minutes or more closer than 2 m to someone. Many of us don't know anyone who has definitely had it already (I know many do). The current infection rate is so low that you are unlikely to be at any risk unless you travel on public transport or are in close contact with a frontline covid health worker.

Following your own restrictions I am sure you will be pretty safe.

Personally, I'll be on the first plane to some holiday place that I can but it is no issue for me isolating for 2 weeks on my return, although I doubt they will keep that restriction long.

MarshaBradyo · 28/05/2020 16:27

You don’t have to do any of those things. Up to you.

I don’t think many / any people are flying abroad yet are they? Don’t they have to quarantine on return if not there.

Nearlyalmost50 · 28/05/2020 16:27

I know what you mean, 'normality' doesn't look as much fun as it used to, for a start.

I will be shopping online, hated shopping anyway, the only losers will be the charity shops I used to frequent, as I'm now ordering lots of clothes online and really enjoying that way of shopping (and with two children who like clothes, it's a lot of shopping).Hopefully that does support the economy even if not the face to face retail sector.

Abroad- you couldn't pay me good money to go at the moment. My main fear is getting corona on the way out there and being ill in a foreign country. I don't want to be ill anywhere, but definitely not away from home, knowing how to access emergency help/hospital here is important to me. I have a couple of friends who have had corona quite severely, as well as their family who were much more mild, so I just don't want to take that chance.]

I'm a single parent though so it's important to me to be able to keep earning, I am working extra hard at work so I won't be the first in line for redundancies, and I don't want to get corona for that reason, work disruption.

Khione · 28/05/2020 16:29

@loppylop

Plus what happens to people who can't wfh but need to self isolate but are not ill? Unpaid leave?
Eligible for sick pay Matt Hancock said - but I suspect, for most people, that will be just statutory sick pay
Waxonwaxoff0 · 28/05/2020 16:29

YANBU, it's up to you. I expect you won't be alone. I'll be straight back to normal though!

Fluffybutter · 28/05/2020 16:30
@Fluffybutter so will you self isolate before your holiday?
Before ? No , not unless I have symptoms .
If the farcical quarantine is in place by the time we get back (which I highly doubt ) then we will but we can all comfortably work from home anyway which is what I’ve always done so no different for me .
Dh is very senior and likely not to be back in the office till early September so no problem there either

loppylop · 28/05/2020 16:31

@khione
My fear over flying are less of the self isolating after my return. The issue is what happens if I get told on Aug 1st I need to self isolate but I'm due to fly on Aug 5th, Im assuming I can't go & won't get a refund?

I live in London & have lost a relative & family friend to Covid so maybe that's why it seems so real.

OP posts:
loppylop · 28/05/2020 16:32

@Fluffybutter but what happens if you get a call 6 days before you due to go on holiday?

OP posts:
marmitegirl01 · 28/05/2020 16:35

I won’t be rushing back to restaurants anytime soon if there are going to be plastic screens everywhere and staff in masks & gloves. Not really the experience I want 🤷‍♀️

Fluffybutter · 28/05/2020 16:35

@loppylop a call ? Do you mean the track and trace ?
I highly doubt I’ll be in contact with someone for 15 mins who has it .
I don’t spend that much time in shops and if you mean restaurants then I’d have to be extremely unlucky to get it from a table that is apart from mine the appropriate amount .
I don’t use public transport either .

Fluffybutter · 28/05/2020 16:37

I live in London & have lost a relative & family friend to Covid so maybe that's why it seems so real.
We also lost a family member to it in April but I am still able to weigh up the risks

rookiemere · 28/05/2020 16:39

It's a worry for sure OP, but having spent 10 weeks in lockdown I'm already arranging meet ups as soon as it was announced ( am in Scotland) I feel like I've lived a half life for too long and am desperate to start seeing friends and family again. Our holidays are low key over the summer - original plans cancelled due to Covid - if they happen, they happen. If I have to self isolate I will although I'll be pretty annoyed as we're almost sure we've already had it, but not allowed to buy the antibody test to find out. I'm able to wfh though so self isolation wouldn't make a huge difference to what we do now.

MarshaBradyo · 28/05/2020 16:41

People can do what they want obviously, I don’t fancy going on a plane crammed in with others atm. Wonder if they’ll put the divider up in the middle.

Anyway there’s no point in angering over it op. Just do what you enjoy as per usual and if that is scaled back then it’s no big deal.

MarshaBradyo · 28/05/2020 16:41

Angst not angering

loppylop · 28/05/2020 16:44

@Fluffybutter yes I thought the track & trace initially involved calls as the app is still glitchy.

The restaurants I used to visit all tend to be very small & people are quite close etc.

I'm wfh & don't use public transport anyway & DHs city firm is keeping them off for a long time so the risk there is low.

However if my dc return to school & mix & then we are mixing with friends & family that will increase my risk of having to self isolate regardless if I myself stay away from restaurants & shopping.

Everyone had different circumstances & priorities though.

OP posts:
BarbedBloom · 28/05/2020 16:50

I never shopped much anyway. I was shielded but loads were kicked off the shielding list yesterday by the government via text so am expecting I will get one once we come out of lockdown here.

I don't trust the government to keep me safe. I will be going out as little as possible and won't be going to shops, cinemas, restaurants etc. Most people I know are the same. My mum is going to continue shielding so won't see her for a while.

Good job I am not working now as I would have to get public transport to work. I was looking into going back but that may be delayed now
