To not go straight "back to normal"

loppylop · 28/05/2020 15:24

This is not a scaremongering thread, I'm low risk so not overly scared of Covid.
However I will be restricting leisure activities in terms of going out to eat (will do takeaway), flying abroad, shopping (stick to online). Id rather I could do all these things however I want some normality back & am desperate to see family & friends. By avoiding certain activities & prioritising others, taking it slower will I limit how many times I have self isolate!

I don't trust the government to keep me safe

I don’t trust (or expect) anyone to keep me safe, except myself. I can look at the information and risk assess for myself. I’d think it weird if anyone just blindly said ‘oh the government says I can do x, y and z so I will’.

user1471500037 · 28/05/2020 16:56

My new normal will include more restaurants, travel and going out! I need to catch up...

Fluffybutter · 28/05/2020 16:57

@loppylop I haven’t really looked into the app thing as I know it’s a massive mess right now .
Dd probably won’t go back till September as she is year 4 and most restaurants we visit locally are chains so I’m assuming they would abide by all the regulations or otherwise they’d be shut down.
I wouldn’t go anywhere I felt unsafe though so it’s just play it by ear I suppose

ChasingRainbows19 · 28/05/2020 17:00

I really want to get back to normal. I've worked throughout. My normal
Is meals out, gigs, travel etc. However I'm not in a rush to be the first in a pub or restaurant. Maybe a beer garden once they have opened and at a quieter time but not sure about inside the pub...will evaluate while watching the cases. I'm not high risk but I also don't want to catch it or spread it! ( may have had a mild dose in March)
I would like to be able to have some kind of uk break at some point but I've written off air travel this year. Slow and steady getting back to my normal.

I think over summer my socialising will mainly consist of small groups of friends in each other's garden or houses.

BringPizza · 28/05/2020 17:17

I expect we'll all go at our own pace, and that's fine.

I'm not really interesting in hearing everyone constantly justifying why they are, or are not, doing xyz though, and I can see some competitive going out/staying in on the cards.

iVampire · 28/05/2020 17:24

When you’re in the shield group, it’s not a competition.

We are still advised against leaving the house at all (except for unavoidable F2F medical appointments). No sign of any change of restrictions for us, and our review point isn’t until end June.

It’s been trailed that we might have to continue in total isolation for many weeks to come

Spare a thought for us who are not competing. But who are avoiding clogging the NHS. Who are not defined by age, and whose condition may well not be terminal

Mnthrowaway20202 · 28/05/2020 17:25

Amongst my friends/partner/family etc, I think everyone is shocked at how much we’ve been saving and will double think certain frivolous purchases

Khione · 28/05/2020 17:30
@khione
My fear over flying are less of the self isolating after my return. The issue is what happens if I get told on Aug 1st I need to self isolate but I'm due to fly on Aug 5th, Im assuming I can't go & won't get a refund?

I live in London & have lost a relative & family friend to Covid so maybe that's why it seems so real.
If you're not spending 15 minutes within 2m of a non household member then the chances of that are probably (so long as things continue on track) less likely than some other medical, surgical or accidental emergency happening.

BringPizza · 28/05/2020 17:31

When you’re in the shield group, it’s not a competition.
I speak as someone with asthma and a heart condition, and see this every flu season. If you don't want to go out, then stay in. If you don't want to stay in, then go out.

Drivingdownthe101 · 28/05/2020 17:51

iVampire who is competing? People are just saying what they will be happy doing, or not.

Msmcc1212 · 28/05/2020 17:52

I can’t bear the thought of flying. All that recycled air used to gross me out anyway. Always ended up with some cold or other. All good for the environment though and even my pilot friend agrees whose job is at risk.
We probably won’t be able to afford restaurants any more as husbands business has taken a nose dive and will be hard to build back up. But we are enjoying learning to cook more interesting food (we couldn’t live on pasta and sauce for the whole of lockdown!). Never enjoyed shopping and won’t have much money so I think, unless I’m made to go and work rather than WFH my new normal will be this with more f2f with friends. Main worry is when I’ll see my mum again (and DC see Gran) who is shielding and lives a long way away - too long to do in a day.

BringPizza · 28/05/2020 17:54

Drivingdownthe101 I think that was aimed at my comment.

iVampire I'm genuinely sorry if I upset you. I was meaning among non-poorlies, not those under house arrest for nigh on 3 months now. There have been threads about competitive staying-in on FB, and I was meaning people like that who just have to have a damned badge all the time.

maddiemookins16mum · 28/05/2020 17:55

We’re doing exactly the same as you.

YounghillKang · 28/05/2020 17:57

I don’t trust the government to keep me safe

BarbedBloom Know exactly what you mean, essentially stayed close to home for three weeks before the government official lockdown, fortunate as able to wfh easily anyway. Did a big shop, teeth cleaned etc, cancelled social outings, got in supplies. And a number of my friends took similar action. I’m really glad I ignored the government advice at that time, basically carry on and wash your hands! Two people I know were infected in that period, one died and the other is still in hospital. I’m going to continue to shop online, avoid shopping centres/hubs, only do minimal local shops as infrequently as possible, be strict about social distancing and wear a mask when I do have to shop – I know that won’t protect me but it will help protect others. I read an article predicting a second wave by an epidemiologist today, he thinks the infection rate is still too high to ease lockdown. I’m really hoping he’s proved wrong but I don’t feel it’s worth it to take chances just to buy things I can easily have delivered anyway or eat food I can cook at home, particularly as I’m giving support to shielded/vulnerable people.

Drivingdownthe101 · 28/05/2020 18:07

I read that article too. I also read an article that quoted a Dr from the WHO as saying a second wave is ‘extremely unlikely’ and an article where the people doing the Oxford vaccination trial said they may struggle to develop a vaccination as infection levels in the community are too low.
Now I have no idea who is right or wrong, but we can’t just read one article and take it as fact.

Fluffybutter · 28/05/2020 18:11

I can’t bear the thought of flying. All that recycled air used to gross me out anyway. Always ended up with some cold or other.
You’ll probably find that was from the tray table or arm rests .
Once I started taking hand gel and antibacterial wipes I haven’t had anything like that.
I wipe down all of our trays, screens and arm rests as we sit down

HelsinkiLights · 28/05/2020 18:11

We moved cities before lockdown due to DH's job & don't really know anyone really well where we are.
So wondering when it's going to be safer to use trains to visit friends/family/stay over & vice versa as I don't drive yet.

Spodge · 28/05/2020 18:13

I'll be straight back to the gym. Sounds like their social distancing measures will be fine and there won't be any wait for equipment with many fewer allowed in.

I'll be straight back to restaurants I completely trust with their hygiene measures. In fact I've been supporting them as much as possible by getting take aways in the hope they will still be there when we are allowed to go.

I will consider staying in hotels in the UK but it depends on what their facilities are like. If they try to serve all meals in the room, I'm not interested.

I'd like to go back to the cinema if there's adequate distancing.

I won't be flying anywhere for the foreseeable. Mucking about with facemarks and gloves and whatever other precautions are necessary is too much faff.

I won't be rushing back to the shops. The restrictions are such that I might just as well buy online.

Drivingdownthe101 · 28/05/2020 18:15

I don’t think my gym will reopen. I can’t see how it’ll manage to keep afloat financially with dramatically reduced numbers.

megletthesecond · 28/05/2020 18:16

Yanbu.
I'm keeping my head down until July at least.

Wilberforce1 · 28/05/2020 18:25

I'm the same as you op. I don't want to rush back to things, I'm low risk apart from my weight (BMI 32) so that worries me but I am working on it though.

I'm not going to rush into shops, pubs etc and won't be going to peoples houses when it's allowed. I am looking forward to meeting two friends next week for a walk but nothing inside and definitely not the gym.

loppylop · 28/05/2020 18:48

@khione I'm planning on sending my dc back to school & don't expect them to be able to social distance but do expect to possibly be told to self isolate as mixing will have increased. Plus in reality once I see family we won't be able to keep all the cousins 2m apart.

I'm not really interesting in hearing everyone constantly justifying why they are, or are not, doing xyz though, and I can see some competitive going out/staying in on the cards.

It's not intended to be competitive, I'm simply trying to avoid life back to normal, self isolate, back to normal, self isolate etc. Hopefully I'm wrong & it won't happen to me.

Had my B12 jag yesterday

letmethinkaboutitfornow · 28/05/2020 20:53

I would love to be back to normal as soon as possible. This is the best time to get that herd immunity in place so when the next wave comes (around the winter months) my body will have developed the antigens.
The sooner is the better!
