For wondering why the Daily Mail lifts stories from here - at the cost of people remaining anonymous??

Was reading a thread earlier about a woman who didn't want to share her scratch card winnings with family. Low and behold, it is then in the Daily Mail!

I assume the person wanted to remain anonymous - how would they feel about having their issues plastered in a national paper?! How do scummy "journalists" justify it?? Or am I being naive and they plant the stories in the first place??

She shared it on a public forum hate the DM but no expectation of privacy from MN, it’s why people NC.

I've wondered this many a time.

Did the article in the Daily Mail name her?

How do they know who the poster is? How can they find out their identity?

The poster is as identifiable in the DM as they are on here presumably.

If you don't want what you post being discussed elsewhere don't post it.

No I get it's not secret, nor did they name her. They screen grabbed the post and some responses. If you were one of the family members she is referring to though I would presume you would know who the person was.

If I posted something on MN and someone came across it from RL, I would think fair enough and deal with it. Feel it's a bit different to being in a national paper though which is read by far more people. Just think it's a bit of a shitty thing to do.

Yes but that's why you don't post on a public forum if you don't want your posts to be public.

I get your point about a newspaper 'taking it further afield' so to speak but even MNHQ float stories on Facebook (possibly Twitter too).

Mind you, it's not just the Daily Mail. Lots of other newspapers publish MN stories, not to mention they often end up on Jeremy Vine and This Morning.

You shouldn’t post anything anywhere that you are not happy to share with the entire population . I work on the theory that if you wouldn’t say it to someone’s face don’t post it .

If you want to remain ‘anonymous’ do not post on a public forum. For all she knew, the family members involved may have already read it on here.

The DM isn't the only company to do this.

I've seen a lot of Reddit posts recycled like that. They have AITA (Am I The Asshole?) which is their equivalent of AIBU. Yes, I said asshole rather than arsehole as it's not a British site.

I thought the post was planted by Camelot to boost scratchcard sales so I would be interested if DM can uncover a real life person behind it

You are being naive, newspapers and TV discussion programmes around the world have been using threads from here for content for years, probably over a decade.

This thread comes up about as often as a story is poached
