To think alcohol is overrated?

Alcoholic drink vs non-alcoholic drink.

Why is one seen as better than the other?
Why can I have 3 glasses of champagne/wine in one sitting but not 3 glasses of juice/fizzy?

Why is one seen as cool and the other as a put-off?

Why is it okay/normal to drink something that could make you lose control of your mental faculties and potentially cause you to misbehave, be sick, feel unwell, make a fool of yourself, make dangerous decisions, etc but frowned upon to drink something that will make you bloated at best?

Why should a glass of wine/champagne be topped up continuously but go to the fizzy/juice bar/ask for more non-alcoholic drinks more than once and you're looked at sideways?

Why is it okay/expected/normal to have dinner with wine/champagne but not other drinks?

Is alcohol overrated/overhyped? Why/Why not?

Just asking Grin

Where on earth are you than anyone cares if you have two glasses of juice?

Liverbird77 · 27/05/2020 14:50

I don't really like sweet drinks, so I struggle with more than one or two non alcoholic drinks.
I am pregnant, and I haven't had a drink since last November. I quite like being booze free but I am looking forward to a Martini or a glass of dry white!

Puddlejuice · 27/05/2020 14:53

I get what you mean, because I get irrationaly annoyed with people who are constantly drinking pop or sickly drinks.
I don't know why, it makes absolutely no sense, but I couldn't for example date someone who never drank water, just cola or suchlike.
I'm odd, I know.

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/05/2020 14:58

I have a friend who drinks those awful sports drinks with breakfast and I judge him. I'd judge him if it was beer as well though.

Crystal87 · 27/05/2020 14:58

It's not overrated but both are used for different things. Things like wine because I enjoy the effects of the alcohol and I like the taste. Soft drinks are mainly just as a thirst quencher. So I would only drink a soft drink till I was no longer thirsty.

x2boys · 27/05/2020 14:59

I.drink both,I don't like tea and coffee so drink mainly fizzy flavoured water during the day ,I also like wine ,no one else's. Buissness really .

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 27/05/2020 15:01

I always have plenty of non alcohol options Grin

Trying to be a good role model to teens re drinking😅

But yes, some people cannot bear tee totalers. In my experience it’s people with a bit of alcohol dependency going on who feel judged by others abstinence

My MIL calls me a “social worker” whenever I don’t join in 😁, I’m seen as a party pooper

That’s how it is...

InDubiousBattle · 27/05/2020 15:04

You can have 3 glasses of pop or juice in one sitting. No one is turned off. Drinking a glass of juice is not frowned upon. No one is looking a at you sideways is you order a non alcoholic drink and no one thinks you're 'uncool'. No one cares.

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 27/05/2020 15:14

People do care and feel judged imo!

Itsbeforepartb · 27/05/2020 15:28

There must be an actual story here - who has said something to you about your lemonade? Tell them to bugger off!

Why is it okay/normal to drink something that could make you lose control of your mental faculties and potentially cause you to misbehave, be sick, feel unwell, make a fool of yourself, make dangerous decisions, etc

Well, it only does that if you drink too much of it, which is generally frowned upon (unless you're a university fresher I suppose).

LunaNorth · 27/05/2020 15:30

Bloody hell, OP, how much alcohol do you drink to get in that state? Grin

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 27/05/2020 15:43

I used to love a good drink. I loved getting drunk with friends, even just with dp. Then hangovers started to get worse l, then I started to have terrible anxiety after drinking. (I'm definitely binge drinker. Never been one to just have a couple Evey now and then, if I'm drinking, I'm drinking all night). Now I get anxiety while I drink. I get to a certain point of tipsyness and I start panicking about how I will feel the next day and the terrible feelings I'll have for days after. Sometimes I carry on regardless, sometimes I just stop and go to bed. I also can't drink alcohol while out for dinner, it makes me so bloated and I eventually throw up, even although I'm nowhere near drunk.
My mum thinks I'm allergic to alcohol because I react so badly to it while drinking and for quite some time after 😂. She wanted to take us on an all inclusive holiday and include drinks package. I told her I wouldn't need that as I won't use it. She wouldn't accept that. Kept saying 'ah but you could just have a couple of drinks at night', no because I will just feel ill. So yes I think it's over rated.

@Wewearpinkonwednesdays Gosh that sounds awful.

She wanted to take us on an all inclusive holiday and include drinks package. I told her I wouldn't need that as I won't use it.

This part of what I'm saying, don't/shouldn't the "drinks" package include non-alcoholic?
