Ok, so the initial lockdown has already been much harder for people who live in cramped accommodation, who don’t have a garden, whose children don’t have access to good WiFi with laptops, etc.
But it feels like the new rules will create even more inequality. For example:
- people will be allowed to have garden parties, but that’s a bit useless for people who usually socialise in cafes or pubs because they don’t have a garden. Also, not great in built up areas where some people will be partying while others will be trying to work from home.
- we are being discouraged from using public transport, so that means that if you have a car, you are fine, but a bit stuffed otherwise.
- it’s very hard to book a holiday even in the U.K. at the moment, as no one knows what the rules will be, but if you have a second home, then you are obviously fine!
- leisure centres, etc being closed means that children and teenagers from less well off families will have absolutely nothing to do in the summer holidays.
