To think the next few months, as the lockdown is slightly relaxed, will create an even greater division in U.K. society?

Ok, so the initial lockdown has already been much harder for people who live in cramped accommodation, who don’t have a garden, whose children don’t have access to good WiFi with laptops, etc.

But it feels like the new rules will create even more inequality. For example:

  • people will be allowed to have garden parties, but that’s a bit useless for people who usually socialise in cafes or pubs because they don’t have a garden. Also, not great in built up areas where some people will be partying while others will be trying to work from home.
  • we are being discouraged from using public transport, so that means that if you have a car, you are fine, but a bit stuffed otherwise.
  • it’s very hard to book a holiday even in the U.K. at the moment, as no one knows what the rules will be, but if you have a second home, then you are obviously fine!
  • leisure centres, etc being closed means that children and teenagers from less well off families will have absolutely nothing to do in the summer holidays.

I agree, this virus will really hit the poor. You should try not to use public transport, without a car, how is that going to work? Gardens have been a godsend in this situation. My heart goes out to all mums with young children in a flat 🙁
