But just let me rant at the anonymous hobby. The hobby that cannot be named.

NAME THE FUCKING HOBBY AMIRITE

The only hobby that should be anonymous is one that'll end up with prison time. Not cycling or golf. Unless your DH is actually Chris Froome, no one will recognise you from a named hobby.

“I won’t say what the hobby is because it’s outing” automatically makes me think the OP or their OH are pony play fetishists.

It almost always turns out to be badminton or chess or something.

If your hobby is sooo "anonymous" it's cycling. Or dogging. End of.

Cycling or fishing. Ideal hobbies when you want to be out of the house days at a time.
It's always cycling though.
Whenever I see one of those road racing events in action i think of the mumsnetter wrangling 2 small children and searching the house, copying important documents.

I wouldn't name mine, because although it's not that unusual theres only 1 place that does it in my city so it would be outing if someone could be arsed to look into it

My husband has what some would call a niche hobby, it's Kendo. There aren't many clubs in the UK and most don't have that many members but I wouldn't go online and be a tit about it 😁😁😁 he also cycles plays golf and skis and anything else that gets him out of the house 😂

God I agree!!! I don’t feel why people think ANY hobby is outing!! Unless you are super specific about “DH is in the UK tiddlywinks team in the 40-45 age category and we live in Lincoln” might do it... but even tiddlywinks gives you thousands and thousands of people in the UK who do it...!

And when it’s cycling or fishing or golf it’s just bonkers. I reckon at least 1/4 men aged 25-65 are into one of the above so let’s stop pretending our DHs are sooooo younique.

Hobbies are outing, I recognised someone on here because of their hobby . I recognised the group mentioned, and name search and it was obvious who it was.

If you are talking about going for a ride or a job, it's anonymous, but if you start mentioning anything a bit specific, it's not. By definition, YOU who doesn't know the OP won't have a clue, but people in their bubbles will...

If you lie and change the hobby, it makes the whole thread full of inconsistencies and it's not worth it - with endless stupid questions or posts: "well he could cycle at 8am instead of 9 am" - but no, because it's not actually cycling he couldn't...

you are missing the point. Start talking about a fishing lake, or a golfing tournament, or a work afternoon golf trip, and the people involved in the same thing will pick up details.

It's not about not being recognised by people you don't know, it's about the people in the same circle.

Haha this makes me laugh. My main "hobby" is paganism and witchcraft and it is not something I want anybody at work to know about because their first thought is you're mental lol.
Other than that it's knitting, cross stitch, building dollshouses in miniature 1:44 scale and cats.
Oh yes and collecting geodes and large crystals and rocks.
But really who needs to know unless it's my sister or my mum, they make me happy.
I usually just tell people I like cross country walking.

The daft thing is, it's usually the exact circumstances of the AIBU that are the unique thing.

Couple in their thirties with kids in primary school, he likes cycling, she has a gym class = not outing.

Couple currently rowing about the precise storage location of bikes whilst his sister visits, who she hasn't liked since the wedding four years ago when she insulted the violet creme anglaise = outing.

@MitziK no & no. Plenty of opportunity for evening wear though- but it's not ballroom.

I don't name it because it seems to be relatively unheard of - people know it as my particular unusual hobby- and the demographic isn't really MN so I'd be traceable if anyone joined the dots. Also the one time I did mention it under a one-off NC, I found someone in another country in the UK with whom I had a common contact through the wider hobby. It's a small circle (although that can be true for anything, I guess)!

It’s always cycling or golf. Both take hours, cost mighty mula if you take them seriously and so are perfect for caring arguments between parents with young children.
