To ask what’s reasonable re neighbour evening noise

Obviously it’s no one’s problem that I have a sleeping child/it’s so hot windows are open in child’s room etc, but I would have thought that whooping and cheering and playing football in the garden would maybe die down around 8/9pm, just because of neighbourly consideration. Is that not a thing? What time would people expect loud playing to stop in the garden? By all means DS wakes up at 5.30am and would love a run and a play in the garden but we hold off until after 10 because neighbours...

I don’t think 8 or 9pm is particularly unreasonable in summer. Likewise, no reason to wait until 10am for your child to be out playing in the morning.

But when would you expect the noise to stop, reasonably? 10?11pm?

Noise should stop by 10pm and start at 8am IMO. I realise how frustrating it can be though.

Ok thank you - didn’t realise those were the “official” times! They seem a little late/early still. I mean I wouldn’t complain or feel comfortable complaining about 21.30 noise, but I also wouldn’t feel comfortable letting DS out to play At 7am either right now when everyone will be asleep with windows open!

My neighbours are still blaring out their stereo into their garden. Got all the windows shut and can still hear every word...

Went out and told my neighbours to keep it down at 10 the other night shouting at each other from their doorsteps while socially distance drinking bottles and bottles of wine 😡... it's easier for those who aren't working at the minute to forget that some people still are, and they won't sit in their private back gardens as then they can't chat.

In their defence tho they did straight away turn their volumes down.

I've just had to ask neighbours to sort the kids out at 9.30 now I feel I'm BU. But they were right outside my house shouting and screaming, not just playing and not outside their own houses.

Have you tried a white noise machine to help block out noise?

Partially deaf neighbour who watches every one in the street from her windows and likes to makes pointed comments in person, all quiet until 11pm when she puts her bedroom tv on at full volume. My bedroom doesn't back onto hers, I'm a room away to the back. I can hear every word.
Other neighbours don't give a shit. Thumping music, radios, shouting and swearing in the garden, parties on a regular basis. Fuck the lot of them. Community my arse.

I have my fan on the highest level and could hear them clearly. To be fair to parents they came straight out to sort it but no reply to my message which makes me feel a bit awkward.

I think 8pm is a reasonable time to stop regular noise. I agree with you OP.

I think we should have firm laws as they do in many German towns and cities . I'd quite happily live in a gated community so that i didnt have to suffer the excesses of some neighbours. If mine caused me problems then id cause them back.

Can you use a fan in your child's room for white noise? Point it at the wall so they don't get too cold.

For anyone else losing their mind over constant neighbour noise, I just bought a portable air conditioner and it's glorious. Can't hear a thing. I'm actually freezing at this point, but I'm enjoying the quiet so much I've put a sweater on.

@CourtneyLurve where did you get it from? We had one in our old house but stupidly threw it away as we were worried about it leaking on the carpet in the new house. Massively regret it now as our bedroom has the sun all day

I have the 9000 unit. It's good. It drops the temp from 25C to 20C in about 30 minutes. It was much cheaper when I bought it a month ago - I paid £270 delivered. It is noisy (most are) but as I said, I'm happy with it. It's like white noise EXTREME. And I turn it down to fan at night/when I need something quieter.

You've got to laugh at times like this I guess Next door has her tv on now... (BLANCHE TURN IT THE FUCK DOWN OR I'LL MOW MY NEGLECTED GARDEN AND THROW THE TRIMMINGS THE FUCK OVER THE FENCE WHILE WEARING MY PIKACHU ONESIE AND DOING THE MACARENA, ENJOY THE SHOW).
My hearing is just fine, yet I'm the one pairing my Bluetooth headphones and prepping my earplugs for sleep.

7 to 8pm sounds more than reasonable.

It doesn't matter if neighbours have children or not, everyone is entitled to peace and quiet and enjoyment of their own garden without being disturbed.

If I had noisy neighbours, I would not stop my child from enjoying his own garden at 6am, why would you? With respectful neighbours, kids are not allowed to make noise until 10am.

The 11 pm and 7 am thing is a bit of an urban myth. There is no law prescribing what time you can or cannot make noise. I think it’s come about because the lease terms for some leasehold properties, etc use 11 pm and 7 am as a guide.

But at general law, it’s about what is reasonable. Also, I think most people try to behave decently and be considerate of their neighbours - and being really loud in the garden on a regular basis until late in the evening is not very considerate...
