Unfortunately it seems that Boris et la are winning and Dominic Cummings continues to be (the unelected) Prime Minster.

Alsohuman · 28/05/2020 19:22

@CendrillonSings

I’m sure it’ll really hurt him in next week’s general election... Wink
That’s rich from someone who constantly posts positive polls while being told they’re irrelevant unless an election is imminent. Seems we’ve taught you well.
LexMitior · 28/05/2020 19:34

Well what you’ve got to do is just take a lead from Cummings.

Ignore the detail. Just ignore it.

But stick with the “PM Is weak” line. That hurts. And it will hurt after a week. It’s a very useful trope to hang on the PM.

Previously he was a jolly sort of entertaining man. Now he’s brusque, irritable, short on detail and looks weak. Not his own man.

This will be a successful message even if Cummings resigns. The PM cannot sack him now without looking even weaker than he already does.

An unresolved problem is an opportunity for your opponent. You can twist it any time you like. The PM is very badly advised.

Next time the PM has a credibility issue (and that’s coming), what do you remember? Is it the detail or is it the rose garden and the evasiveness? Of course. Won’t convert a Tory but will your floating voter.

Clavinova · 28/05/2020 19:36

Or Clavinova did you just not read the original Tweet thread and just C&P from somewhere?

From the original thread - the words I quoted are still there - they haven't been deleted from the section I am looking at - not sure why you are doubting me. I obviously didn't read everything - I don't usually follow DAG.

Clavinova · 28/05/2020 19:46

From the original thread
Obviously not the same tweet/section of tweet you are looking at!

Leicester5 · 28/05/2020 19:52

@CendrillonSings that this whole episode has eroded trust and obfuscated people's interpretation of the rules.

SabrinaThwaite · 28/05/2020 19:56

Clavinova Nope, your quote has gone.

Your: Durham Police...include word "might" in a confusingly worded sentence

Has been replaced with: The Durham police statement is confusingly worded

SabrinaThwaite · 28/05/2020 20:05

Actually, apologies to Clavinova

Your Durham Police...include word "might" in a confusingly worded sentence is still there.

But, then again, fuck me dead, you edited the shit out of it, didn’t you?

Durham Police: issue statement that they consider offence was committed but minor, and that enforcement action would have been taken had advice not been accepted - but also include word "might" in a confusingly worded sentence

Commentators:
Look! Might! Might! Might!

Your carefully edited quote is barely recognisable from the actual Tweet.

SabrinaThwaite · 28/05/2020 20:06

This Tweet.

@MarshaBradyo

If he survives and comes up bounding fair play to him. I don’t actually want him to be rubbish. And he looks like the public feel.

But Starmer is formidable and better at him at PMQ. I welcome better, credible opposition.

Yes he is better opposition, mind anything would have been an improvement on his predecessor.

Too many pauses for my liking, as if he thinks he's in a courtroom drama on telly. I want someone to shout 'get on with it fgs! at him.

LexMitior · 28/05/2020 21:01

Well maybe but he’s a lot better than the PM. And it shows

Ha Get I like a good pause. I thought the Queen did a good one in her speech, rare.

I loved the bit where Starmer did his bit, very precise and then ended on. Why?

He’s good. Johnson will need his team to bolster him up.

Ulver · 28/05/2020 21:12

Eh?

MarshaBradyo · 28/05/2020 21:12

Get you sound like you’re searching for bad stuff. As is your want. People try with the land thing, for donkeys etc. But he’s pretty exemplary.

Ulver · 28/05/2020 21:17

Tory party presided over Jimmy Saville scandal where children in Care homes, secure units and hospitals And dying patients were raped.
Nice try in distraction with completely irrelevant propaganda.
Thatcher wanted him Knighted and was a close friend.

Starmer is better than Johnson because he can think on his feet and he plans his attack.

Johnson comes across poorly against this. He blusters because he doesn’t know where this question is going. Starmer is building his argument, bit by bit, to say that Johnson is incompetent and also weak.

He’s not stupid. He doesn’t even need to ask a question as Johnson is digging himself a hole at every press conference he gives.

Starmer just has to rely on Johnson carrying on; and of course I look forward to his effort in telling the opposition to “move on”. The response is obvious to everyone except those who advise the PM.

Clavinova · 28/05/2020 21:26

SabrinaThwaite
Yes - that tweet.

Your carefully edited quote is barely recognisable from the actual Tweet.

Perhaps I should apply for a job with Led By Donkeys? Grin

Seriously though, the only point I was making was that the statement from Durham Police was confusingly worded - I did include an ellipsis after Durham Police and the relevant words (to my point) were separated by a dash in the original tweet to indicate a separate point - not that difficult to spot. Most posters complain that my C&Ps are too long.

"Durham Police...include word "might" in a confusingly worded sentence."

Has been replaced with:The Durham police statement is confusingly worded

There you go! I wasn't intending to make any other point - you can make other points if you wish. Why didn't you mention that the statement was confusingly worded? Seems to be an important point to me - there are half a dozen quotes from DAG (now) to say that it is.

SabrinaThwaite · 28/05/2020 21:38

"Durham Police...include word "might" in a confusingly worded sentence."

You conveniently left out the entire point of DAG’s tweet, which was that Cummings’ offence was enforceable under the regulations.

But you crack on.

Clavinova · 28/05/2020 21:51

You conveniently left out the entire point of DAG’s tweet, which was that Cummings’ offence was enforceable under the regulations.

That wasn't my intention. Why did you leave out that the statement was confusingly worded? Top of his list here;

So in summary:

  • confused police statement wording.
  • police consider the Castle Barnard trip as an offence under the regulations.
  • but on known facts it was so minor that words of advice would have been given.
  • only if words of advice rejected, more formal police powers invoked.
SabrinaThwaite · 28/05/2020 22:10

Why did you leave out that the statement was confusingly worded?

Because it was a minor point in DAG’s original thread, a footnote, as the point of the main thread was that the Durham Police considered the Barney trip enforceable under the regulations.

Perhaps DAG decided to put more emphasis on the wording after he realised that people were misunderstanding the “might” - in particular he pointed out that Laura Kuenssberg had misunderstood the police statement.

It seems DAG considers that the wording of the statement has enabled Cummings to slide.

If you were annoyed at Dominic Cummings before
Clavinova · 28/05/2020 22:30

Because it was a minor point in DAG’s original thread

I'm not sure that I've seen the original thread - you have already posted;

"DAG deleted the original one and reworded it with more reasoning."

It seems DAG considers that the wording of the statement has enabled Cummings to slide.

He also states - "but on known facts it was so minor that words of advice would have been given."

in particular he pointed out that Laura Kuenssberg had misunderstood the police statement.

The Guardian have been kind with their headline as well;

"Dominic Cummings potentially broke lockdown rules, say Durham police."

"Force says trip to Barnard Castle was possible breach but does not warrant further action."

"Dominic Cummings’ family trip to Barnard Castle potentially broke lockdown rules and would have led to police telling him to turn around had he been stopped, Durham police have concluded."

www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/may/28/dominic-cummings-potentially-broke-lockdown-rules-say-durham-police

Will have to look again tomorrow.

Isaidnomorecrisps · 28/05/2020 22:34

They all lied. The people who accept that - good for you.
The rest of us can’t understand how this can happen with no checks and balances.
Seriously, we live in the UK not China. I don’t trust him not to put us in camps by the end of his term. I’m not joking.

SabrinaThwaite · 28/05/2020 22:37

Clavinova latest DAG tweet.

Cummings should consider himself lucky.
