To think Be Kind does not seem to affect politicians?

I’m preparing myself to get flamed but hear me out please.
Yes Dominic Cummings broke the rules, he acted stupidly and dangerously etc etc BUT isn’t the scrutiny he’s going under on every forum, newspaper, social media etc going way too far and completely opposite the message we were sending out a few months ago of Be Kind.
Caroline Flack was going to trial for domestic violence, she was top of the headlines for weeks, people calling for her to get sacked from ITV, she committed suicide.

Just because he’s a politician doesn’t mean he doesn’t have feelings, isn’t a human and the stress of the whole country hating him could cause him to break down.

I prefer to remember Cummings’ response to an MP that had received death threats over Brexit.

“Vote for the WA then.”

This man has zero empathy. He doesn’t care what you think. He’s playing you.

Chillipeanuts · 26/05/2020 09:24

I don’t think it’s very kind telling people they can’t be with their 13 year old son while he dies - or any loved one, for that matter - then doing as you damn well please yourself.

Have to admit, I’ve never seen Love Island. Is it well known for its kindness?

Chillipeanuts · 26/05/2020 09:28

“Almost comical uncertainty”

Oh yes, how we all laughed (not).
Well, ain’t she a peach? An extremely empathetic, well-matched couple, clearly.

PickUpAPickUpAPenguin · 26/05/2020 09:28

I agree that the people who post shit like #bekind are never kind people and it really means "shut up"

Experimenopause · 26/05/2020 09:31

I feel gutted every time I think of all the people who are suffering it without help or have died alone. Just so they could ensure no one else gets the virus and that they don’t spread it elsewhere.
Since last evening though, my bigger concern is what else are these morons getting away with? They can blatantly lie about things we found out because of some other responsible citizens. What about things we may never find in time? These are the kind of people designing the future of this country?

He has bagged himself almost £1 billion for his pet project ARPA

I've never heard of this. My ten seconds investigating confirmed that as it sounded, this is investment in a UK equivalent of DARPA, the research organisation that apparently invented the internet, among many other things.

I'm not sure investing in research and developing technology is on a par with killing kittens. I was going to say not even if the focus is on defense projects, but I don't know yet that it is. Even in the US case, the "D" was a later add-on to their "ARPA."

Of course 10 seconds may not be enought to uncover the sinister nature of this project, I'm sure someone will enlighten me.

  1. Dominic Cummings is not a politician. Nobody elected him. He was the person who used methods which either were or should have been illegal to use people's personal data to work out how to convince them to vote for Brexit, and since then he has managed to get himself into a position where he can wield an enormous amount of power and influence over our prime minister and government, all of whom (despite their many flaws) have been democratically elected, when not one member of the electorate has ever had the opportunity to vote for or against him, and none of us have any means of holding him to account.
  1. Dominic Cummings deliberately exploited human psychology to make Brexit happen. He was behind the mass manipulation of an entire electorate via the harvesting of personal data shared on social media and sophisticated computer algorithms. An important part of this was sowing seeds of division and hatred, pitting different sides against each other, and convincing Brexit voters that they alone were patriotic and loved their country and that everyone else was a traitor. This created a nasty, febrile environment in which certain people felt emboldened to attack politicians and other public figures, over social media and in "real life". Dominic Cummings bears a large part of the responsibility for Anna Soubry being advised not to return to her home by the police, and Gina Miller being terrified of acid attacks when out on the street.

So no. "Be Kind" does not apply to Dominic Fucking Cummings, who can burn in hell as far as I am concerned.

TheFaerieQueene · 26/05/2020 09:54

If you need to be reminded to be kind, rather than it be a default setting, I doubt that kindness is something you will display when the chips are down.

thisenglishlife · 26/05/2020 10:43

Do you think a secret research agency with no stated research focus run by an unelected man that aims to improve 'government performance' isn't at all worrying? We've seen how he and CA have manipulated the British public with algorithms and false information. No worries though, nothing to see here.

ChristmasFluff · 26/05/2020 11:05

This situation is one entirely of his own making.

If he'd accepted he had flouted the rules, apologised and resigned, no-one would be talking about him now at all.

z0fl0ra · 26/05/2020 14:08

I agree what he’s done is wrong and yes he probably should lose his job but what Caroline Flack did was also wrong by physically assaulting her partner and she also should have lost her job. But if we let these things happen in private and play out that’s one thing and both of these cases were being looked at, but the headlines, 50% of threads on Mumsnet and every other social media site, personal attacks on Twitter by numerous celebrities are the sort of thing that caused Caroline Flack to take her own life.
Just because Cummings is a male and a politician doesn’t mean he won’t be affected the same way as this is exactly how Flacks mistakes were the talk of England.

Notmyrealname855 · 26/05/2020 14:10

Accountability isn’t being unkind. Breaking the rules you made is unkind to those who followed them and suffered under them. Cummings is a hypocrite and a liar, his wife too. That’s the truth.

peperethecat · 26/05/2020 14:19

OP, there is literally no sensible comparison to be made between Dominic Cummings and Caroline Flack.

Caroline Flack was a mentally ill TV presenter who made some poor choices and was hounded on social media by people who thought that she was fair game just because she was in the public eye.

Dominic Cummings is the unelected, unaccountable special adviser to the prime minister, who holds a huge amount of power and influence over our elected government, who was involved in making these rules that apply to everyone else in the country, and then deliberately flouted them despite actually having the virus.

Of course people are fucking furious.

Dominic Cummings is telling people to stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives (even if that means your business goes under or you never see your dying mother again) and meanwhile he's contracting the virus and then knowingly driving 300 miles and spreading ithe virus every bloody where, to every shop and petrol station and motorway services and picturesque beauty spot and person he came into contact with.

What if the next person who filled up their car from the same petrol pump as Dominic Cummings was a nurse on their way to work who then contracted the virus and spread it to their patients and colleagues?

Hueandcry · 26/05/2020 14:53

Once again DC is not a politician

SansaSnark · 26/05/2020 14:54

Dominic Cummings is a eugenicist.

I'll be kind when he is.

KaTetof19 · 26/05/2020 15:02

@z0fl0ra Cummings is NOT A POLITICIAN

He is an advisor to a politician yet has more power than most of our elected representatives. This is why he must be under scrutiny. The more the better!

PickUpAPickUpAPenguin · 26/05/2020 15:27

I'll save my sympathy for people like this
