Have you never heard of Motown?

WildCherryBlossom · 26/05/2020 06:25

@HeretoThereandBackAgain Exes and Ohs was great, in fact that whole album 'Love Stuff' was excellent.

MinnieMountain · 26/05/2020 06:43

@AndNoneForGretchenWienersy has nailed it. I was a teenager in the 90's.

I also love Motown and non-complicated jazz.

Sorry OP but you have no taste Grin

StirlingWork · 26/05/2020 12:33

PatricksRum

Oh - Kelis' Acapella is brilliant!!
I associate Amy's songs with just before 2008 - saw one of her videos recently - it's hard to believe she's gone - she was so young.

Did anyone 'Leave their Heart in Tokyo circa Autumn 2009?

You can't deny that's a great high energy track!!

So basically anything that the awful radio stations pump out. Expand your music taste... there is a world of haute cuisine out there and currently you’re eating dog shit off the pavement.

StirlingWork · 26/05/2020 12:39

Also - just remembered I for got

La Roux - 'In For the Kill' and 'Bulletproof' - they seemed to be 2 hit wonders.

Pelleas · 26/05/2020 12:39

Ha ha, you mentioned this on your punk thread! Much as I agreed with you about the punk era, I have to disagree on this one. There was no more decent music made after 1997. Grin

StirlingWork · 26/05/2020 12:40

Pelleas - we all have our own era I supposed - agreed that in 1998/1999 - it was garbage - I mean Vengaboys/B*witched!!!

What the hell is going on here

StirlingWork · 26/05/2020 12:41

JohnFinlaysNewTeeth - I am embarrassingly mainstream

'Dance Wiv Me' by Dizzee Rascal is still fantastic 12 years after it reached no. 1

Also Sam Sparro - 'Black and Gold'. Brilliant track but seemed to be a one hit wonder in UK anyway.

YABVU, OP. It all peaked in 1997 and has been going steadily downhill since.

moveandmove · 26/05/2020 12:53

90s were definitely the best. Don't most people think the music from the decade they were a teen is the best?

StirlingWork · 26/05/2020 12:59

Very often, yes. This is, back circa 2010 - I had a lot of money saved, I looked good and had some great relationships, and freedom!!!

Sorry should have said 'thing is'

Early to mid 90's. Don't get me wrong the 70s and 80s had some great music but that era of the 90s was mine. Rave, trip hop, hip hop (pre gangster). Awesome.

tangochutney · 26/05/2020 13:56

I’ve been re-watching Gavin and Stacey and the music brings back fond memories of all the ‘indie pop’ that was popular in the late noughties- Arctic Monkeys, Razorlight, The Kooks and so on

GivenchyDahhling · 26/05/2020 14:29

OP I think you are my spirit animal. I listen to Kisstory every day which definitely indulges the more R&B side of this (although they wouldn't play stuff like Katy Perry).

I think the reason I love this crap music so much (sorry, I love it, but it's crap) is because the era was my sixth form and start of university, so it reminds me of the sixth form common room, sneaking into pubs/bars/clubs, house parties, then being at university and not having to sneak into the clubs anymore!

Also, I don't think you've mentioned (sorry if you have) - AKON! Absolute banger after banger!

EdinburghFirstTimer · 26/05/2020 14:38

Put the Pritt Stick down!

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 26/05/2020 14:40

I'm tempted to say it started slightly earlier maybe 2006 with Gnarls Barkley -Crazy and that Shakira album.

Slightly younger than the op

StirlingWork · 26/05/2020 14:57

GivenchyDahhling - haha glad you like it almost as much as I do!

Akon - no I didn't mention him - I associate him with 2005

OP posts:
StirlingWork · 26/05/2020 21:27

AdoreTheBeach - Minnie Mountain yes I also love Motown.

In fact I love listening to ''Pick of the Pops' when they choose e.g.1968 or something to hear The Temptations, etc etc..
However, I just looked at the charts in the autumn of 2008 and one of the songs of the time was 'Beggin' by Madcon. That's got such a Motown feel to it that at the time I thought it was a retro song from circa 1969!!

OP posts:
StirlingWork · 26/05/2020 22:38

Also - James Morrison - "You can't play on broken strings...."

Eric Prydz - Pjanoo
Geraldine - Winner's song Grin
