To want a refund?

I bought my son an Xbox one s for his birthday 17 days ago. There is a fault with it which means it keeps powering down. I know enough about this to know that there is a fault with the internal power supply. My question is I can't get through to Argos the WeChat keeps cutting off and there is no answer to my calls, I've checked and there is no stock in the whole of the NW so I know I won't be able to exchange it for another, I've been told they will probably want to send it away for repair but I really don't think it's fair to my son to have to wait weeks maybe months for his birthday gift! Can I get a refund ? Is it possible or do I have to go with the repair?

The Consumer Rights Act gives you a clear early right to reject goods that are unsatisfactory quality, unfit for purpose or not as described, and get a full refund. Write to Argos and tell it about the problem and that you want to reject the Xbox and get your money back.

Your right to a quick refund is limited to 30 days from the date you took ownership of the product (this could be the date of purchase or the date it was delivered to you - whichever is later).

Fantastic @TriangularRatbag can I send an email or does it actually have to be a letter? I apologise if that's a stupid question don't think I've ever returned anything before.

Is there an argos collection point near you? Ours in sainsbury is open, I would take it in and get a refund as its faulty

BreconBeBuggered · 25/05/2020 19:19

You might have to check with their current refund policy as it's affected by Covid, but it shouldn't affect your statutory rights. Before lockdown I took back a phone I'd bought for a teenage DC nine months earlier that had suddenly stopped working, and while they initially tried to fob me off I had a replacement within 24 hours. They issued me with a gift voucher that I used to pay for the new one.

DaffodilSunshine · 25/05/2020 19:23

Did you buy it online or in store? My experience was that in store staff were much more accommodating and flexible with refunds than call centre/web staff (baby item that broke 1 day past 12 month warranty)

Lincslady53 · 25/05/2020 19:26

Argos are usually very good at refunding for returns. It won't cost them anything cos they will just give it back to the supplier.

rabbitheadlights · 25/05/2020 19:27

I bought it online just 17 days ago

If you bought it online and had a home delivery call the home delivery number, they can collect from you and refund your card.

TriangularRatbag · 25/05/2020 19:34

I would email them right now, so that there's a clear record that you've rejected the thing. How Argos deals with emails I don't know, but it doesn't really matter. The email just stops the thirty-day clock running. You can then try hotlines, Sainsbury's, webchats, helpdesks and whatever else they have. If one of those routes succeeds then fantastic, and that will certainly be quicker. But if they give you the runaround you can fall back on your email

chipsandpeas · 25/05/2020 19:35

id double check the sainsubrys will take it

Bibijayne · 25/05/2020 20:36

Within 30 days.of purchase, you can have a full refund. You do not have to accept a repair.

I'd send an email for your own records to prove you tried to contact them.

Stripeytopgirl · 25/05/2020 20:40

Not the same item but I bought a double buggy & on the second usage the wheel started squeaking so loudly, it was just bloody irritating. I drop it back that day & they offered an exchange but I said no thanks & they just refunded me.

rabbitheadlights · 25/05/2020 22:04

As far as I know they are not accepting returns at the moment due to the virus. It did say on argos online, I need to take something back too so hopefully I'm wrong.

Aardvarkitsabloodyaardvark · 25/05/2020 22:11

Ooh ignore me, things have changed since I last looked!

rabbitheadlights · 25/05/2020 22:12

Hope so as otherwise it won't be within 30 days

Until recently it was saying no returns at all at the moment but anything bought from March would have 30 days from when they reopened.
However that doesn't apply anyway for non working items.

unicornsandrainbows11 · 25/05/2020 22:58

You can take it back to any argos store or argos store inside a sainsburys just not a collection only point inside a sainsburys store as they can not do anything but hand your parcels out.
If there isn't any in stock to switch it they won't quarrel a refund as it's inside your 30 day money back guarantee.

Franticbutterfly · 26/05/2020 07:30

Argos are brilliant when dealing with returns. You won't have any problems if you take it down there I'm sure. They customer service is always excellent.
