AIBU to say Friday Night Dinner just isn't funny?

Everyone else in my house thinks Friday Night Dinner is utterly hilarious and roll around on the floor laughing when it's on. I just find it so predictable and dull, Jim the neighbour is so ridiculously unbelievable and I have not found one thing to make me laugh yet. And I've sat on my laptop on the sofa while they've binged-watched practically every episode. Again and again. So AIBU or, as they tell me, do I just not have a sense of humour? :)

We were watching Maigret the other night, and my sons & I said in unison ‘shit on it! It’s Jim’ when Mark Heap appeared. It’s similarly odd to see Paul Ritter when he’s not being Martin.
My elder son can do a very good Jim voice, but sometimes I think that he’s no longer aware when he’s doing it.
The earlier ones were better, but right through to the end it was one of the few programs that we’d all sit down & watch (in real time too) together.

I found it funny once but I just find the dad sooo repulsive and uncomfortable to watch (not the actor, if dressed, the dad character).

NoCureForLove · 25/05/2020 00:14

YAVVVVVVVVVU.
Shit on it.

PhoenixIsFlying · 25/05/2020 00:28

Mark Heap who plays Jim is a comic genius. I am in awe of Jim.

NightScentedStocks · 25/05/2020 00:41

I think it took me an episode or two to get into Jim but then found him funny after that. Loved the Jason Watkins episode.

JasHarts · 25/05/2020 00:42

It’s absolutely rubbish. It’s about as unfunny as Mrs Brown

NightScentedStocks · 25/05/2020 00:43

There was a series with Mark Heap and Dawn French on at the beginning of lockdown and they managed to shoehorn Mark Heap saying "Shalom" into it Grin

Jasharps · 25/05/2020 00:45

I love it. All series. Love Jim. It's hilarious.

Hate miranda and mrs browns boys though

rosiejaune · 25/05/2020 01:01

pigsDOfly it is puerile and repetitive, and I almost didn't continue watching either, but I have finished it now and I did enjoy it despite the low-brow-ness. And not just because I am a secular Jew, but that did add to it somewhat.

The art in it is inventing more and more ridiculous situations to happen in what should be a banal environment. So the background in-jokes etc aren't really the point.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 25/05/2020 01:19

First two series (I refuse to say seasons) are great IMO. Then it quickly runs out of steam - particularly the latest ones.

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 25/05/2020 02:02

Love it!

Also loved Mark Heap in green wing and spaced.

Loved also Man down, and Cuckoo?

Suspect some people find these utterly tedious too?

Chiochan · 25/05/2020 02:11

I love Friday Night Dinner! I cant get series five or six though, my TV askes me to sign up or something.

THEDEACON · 25/05/2020 02:33

YANBU I watched someof the first series and did find it quite funny but saw the beginning of this series and thought it was just AWFUL

Drysnitchinsbitchin · 25/05/2020 02:35

I'm with you OP. It's crud. Someone at work recommended it and I was excited to see Will from the Inbetweeners in it so I thought it must be good. How wrong I was. I watched 4 episodes waiting for it to get better, ugh. Didn't laugh once.

lottiegarbanzo · 25/05/2020 10:22

I do like Mark Heap, he has a special sort of magnetic anti-charisma. I remember him form Spaced and Green Wing - enjoyed both.

I just cannot get past the repulsive half-naked, faecal-mouthed dad. I feel so, so sorry for the mum.

pigsDOfly · 25/05/2020 12:16

@rosiejaune I actually started watching it as also, being a secular jew, I thought there might be some in jokes and things that would touch a cord.

Didn't stay around long enough to find out though as it was just too awful.

I don't might a bit of low brow stuff. I'm currently recording all the episodes of Hi di hi and love those. Can't stand things like Mrs Brown's boys though.
