AIBU to say Friday Night Dinner just isn't funny?

Everyone else in my house thinks Friday Night Dinner is utterly hilarious and roll around on the floor laughing when it's on. I just find it so predictable and dull, Jim the neighbour is so ridiculously unbelievable and I have not found one thing to make me laugh yet. And I've sat on my laptop on the sofa while they've binged-watched practically every episode. Again and again. So AIBU or, as they tell me, do I just not have a sense of humour? :)

I’m not usually a huge fan of over-the-top comedy but I absolutely love Friday night dinner.

I’d agree that Jim and the boys ‘pranks’ can get repetitive/unrealistic but it’s just so bloody hilarious. Martin makes me laugh every time - clearing glass out of the chicken/dead bird in the bin/lord luck/caravan. Some episodes are better than other ones - lord luck and Wilson being buried in the front garden with a Jim carrying the cross like Jesus ‘aren’t we meant to be jewish’ 😂😂😂

I binge watched recently, not having watched much TV pre lockdown. The scene where grandma in a bikini, Jim and boys stood at the front door and one of the boys said "schmoigal?" (or similar!) had me in pain with laughter.

EinsteinaGogo · 24/05/2020 22:55

Its one of our favourite shows.

We use 'Elm' and 'Nippy nippy' as phrases all the time.

Obviously lots of people have different views on comedy. Shit on it.... 😂😂😂

Mischance · 24/05/2020 22:58

I agree OP - it is mega-dull.

Kitsandkids · 24/05/2020 23:01

Yes, YABU. One of the few programmes that my husband and I both enjoy.

We were also big fans of Miranda, but she ended up with the wrong bloke in our opinions!

EinsteinaGogo · 24/05/2020 23:02

Del Boy falling through the bar...

Oh my god - the EPITOME of genius. I defy anyone not to find that hilarious.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 24/05/2020 23:02

YABVU! I love FND!

Jim RUINS it?Yabvvvvvvu and also insane.Shit on it.

I don’t think it’s that popular compared to other similar things so you’re not alone.

I love it though. Hello bambinos Smile

Runmybathforme · 24/05/2020 23:04

I love it, especially the way Jim talks to his sons.

TinCanAlley2 · 24/05/2020 23:05

The last season certainly isn't

Copperblack · 24/05/2020 23:05

Love it! One of the few things our family sit and watch together ( older teens). My husband IS Martin Goldman - or at least aspires to be. Whenever we go out if we see a Mercedes we all chant ‘it’s a very fast car’. This series wasn’t the best but was very welcome during Lockdown.

Papatron · 24/05/2020 23:06

My son and my other half find it absolutely hilarious. They forced me to watch it and I found it mildly amusing. Mark Heap is excellent and quite disturbing as always. I rate it as 'tolerable' but I wouldn't choose to watch it of my own volition.

TheTruthAboutLove · 24/05/2020 23:10

I can’t stand it, and it’s one of those programmes I’ve tried and didn’t like. Then tried again when I felt I was in a different frame of mind and still didn’t like it. I do keep trying it but I just don’t get the humour.

It’s the Dad I can’t understand. I know humour is subjective but it’s just childish to me, you know when the punchline is coming and what it’ll be. The Dad is totally OTT going from the episodes I’ve seen, and the two boys both have the mental ages of a chicken nugget. Simon Bird was fantastic in The Inbetwneers but I think I’m expecting him to be Will in this and it’s a different type of character in FND.

The only thing I did like about it was Jim and Wilson, the family, couldn’t stand them.

I’ve resigned myself to the fact things like this and Miranda when it’s staged and you know when the next joke or punchline is coming just isn’t my thing and gave up.

Apirateslifeforme · 24/05/2020 23:11

DH is that you?

Me and DD love it, DH thinks its shite.

I love Jim.

MilsonandJim · 24/05/2020 23:11

Del Boy falling through the bar, surely?
Crikey no. Not funny.

I love it, especially the way Jim talks to his sons
Martin maybe? Did make me wonder for a moment if I had missed something about Jim Grin

FND isn't a rip roarer but it has the odd very funny moment and the characters are great. The acting is brilliant and some of the one liners are classics.

The end of the last episode is wonderful.

Oldestchild90s · 24/05/2020 23:12

Schmoigel!

leftovercoffeecake · 24/05/2020 23:14

I used to enjoy it. Then people milked the whole Jim shalom thing and completely killed it for me.

Stuckforthefourthtime · 24/05/2020 23:16

Love the dad.

Can't stand Jim, he's so creepy that watching him, especially with the mum, makes my skin crawl a bit, and I usually choose his bits to go and make a cup of tea. Looks like he really divides people!!

MayFayre · 24/05/2020 23:17

Love it, particularly Jim

swimlyn · 24/05/2020 23:19

The first couple of series were mildly funny. The rest were just not funny.

Hell yes. The same situations and jokes again and again ad nauseam.

Definitely had its day long ago.

EmmaC78 · 24/05/2020 23:20

I love the episodes with Mr Morris in, I laugh out loud to those ones.

Isitgiroday · 24/05/2020 23:20

YANBU predictable bollocks - yawn.

Macaroni46 · 24/05/2020 23:20

I'm with you OP. I can't bear it either.

savetti · 24/05/2020 23:23

This is so not my normal Type of show.
But it’s so stupid it’s funny

Florrieboo · 24/05/2020 23:23

We love it, the scene with Jim eating the rice pudding was both hilarious and stomach churning.

We use phrases like "Nippy Nippy" and "crimble crumble" all the time. The episode with the fox in the freezer was my favourite ever.
