Painted Rocks

AIBU to hate the painted rocks people are leaving all around the place. Yes it might be a fun activity but if your kids want to paint rocks then do it at home and keep them there. When I walk through woods, or by fields then I want to enjoy the natural scenery not gaudily painted rocks very few yards. It is little better than littering the countryside.

Haven't RTFT but I hate painted rocks as well, at least when left about in wild places. Litter.

Pimadona - that doesn't sound like a very magic tree

SpillTheTeaa · 25/05/2020 10:54

Where are these stones coming from? If people are taking them from beaches, that is illegal under the Coastal Protection Act. The fine is up to £1,000.

Most children take stones from the beach literally a couple 😂

IncrediblySadToo · 25/05/2020 10:55

I'm with you

Painted rocks in front gardens, village greens, patches of urban wasteland etc, half-hidden to make them a challenge to spot are a fun idea

Putting them on beaches or in woods or fields does nothing to add to natural beauty; they spoil it.

^ this !!!

Thecruxxofitis · 25/05/2020 10:55

That’s sad

Why do you think it’s funny?

JaneJeffer · 25/05/2020 10:58

How are the fairies meant to get in and out? Fairies operate by otherworldly magic. They don't need doors.

Macncheeseballs · 25/05/2020 10:58

Oh yes the natural beauty of the rotting corpse of a bunny rabbit I saw t'other day, and I do hope no one let's their doggies shit everywhere. Musn't blight the country side

grumpyorange · 25/05/2020 10:59

And shells I should add

LadyGAgain · 25/05/2020 11:01

Fun sponge alert Biscuit

Think this started off as a mental health thing. Remember it last year from uni. You found a painted stone and moved it somewhere else for someone else to find. They had little messages of hope on them. I have one my tutor gave me.
Lots of these have been put in the grounds of the hospital I work. I've seen them as I walk to work . I like them.

Aesopfable · 25/05/2020 11:04

The lovely dry stone walls that stretch across the Lake District and other places would never get planning permission now

The ‘lovely’ stonewalls that stretch over the fells are a result of the Enclosure Acts that denied rural people access to common lands they had used for generations and effectively gave the land to wealthy land owners. I would sincerely hope that no such law could be passed today (unlikely given the ‘peasantry’ who were driven from the land asa result now have the vote)

The rocks don't bother me but one family have been going round safety pinning paper pictures to trees next to a water source. I was flamed when i suggested on a local site, where they proudly posted, that all the pins were a risk to local wildlife and dogs as it's a nice thing for people to see Confused

Destroyer · 25/05/2020 15:27

Why are people going on about farms? They are IN the countryside, but they are NOT 'the countryside'.

YinMnBlue · 25/05/2020 17:49

Aesop I agree!
But can you imagine the present day NT, for example, saying ‘yes, go ahead’ to any landowner, however wealthy, who wanted to construct walls all over pristine fellside? The word ‘eyesore’ would echo across the valleys!

CynthiaRothrock · 25/05/2020 17:56

It's far better than the "knitting bomb" or what every they want to call it. Round here people have been knitting blankets/scarf type thing (badly) and wrapping them around railings and lampposts etc. Don't get me wrong the first day they look pretty but after it's rained and the wind has blown it, it looks like some one has lost their rags off the line!

iswhois · 25/05/2020 18:04

They are gastly and some paints are toxic to wildlife. When it rains they can pollute rivers etc.

But the "rules" as to what is acceptable have been thrown out of the window in lockdown - because it's "nice", for example setting off fireworks once a week. Fireworks are only harmful to horses and wildlife on bonfire night

OverlyLeafy · 25/05/2020 18:17

I paint rocks that me and DS will hide on a walk in the woods.

Small ladybirds/bees etc.

We walk the dog daily and have never seen any of them again, I assume kids find them and take them home. Sometimes we hide one and sit on a nearby bench to watch a child find it. They always seem happy to be honest; not quite the same reaction as finding a bag of dog shit or an empty plastic bottle; both of which I consider 'litter'.

Macncheeseballs · 25/05/2020 18:23

Seems that dog shit is more acceptable to some curmudgeons

OverlyLeafy · 25/05/2020 18:23
