Painted Rocks

AIBU to hate the painted rocks people are leaving all around the place. Yes it might be a fun activity but if your kids want to paint rocks then do it at home and keep them there. When I walk through woods, or by fields then I want to enjoy the natural scenery not gaudily painted rocks very few yards. It is little better than littering the countryside.

YABVVU
They're lovely.
It has really brightened up our walks during lockdown.
I can't believe people have an issue with them.

We have a wonderful anonymous artist in our village who had painted some absolute masterpieces. They're now doing commissions to raise money for charity.

Notapheasantplucker · 24/05/2020 20:56

YABU, lighten up OP

PimaDona · 24/05/2020 20:58

It’s quarantine parenting for the middle classes

  • can you post on Facebook (tick)
  • chance to show off DCs —your— art skills
  • dads get involved building fairy castles/gruffalo trails, pure one up manship
Davros · 24/05/2020 20:59

Painted rocks you say? Never seen it, never heard of it

Dreamersandwishers · 24/05/2020 20:59

Given that there’s very little natural wilderness left in the UK , and that every inch is in some way altered by us being here, I think you are being ridiculous.
It gave someone, probably a child, pleasure to paint it, then leave it for another person to connect with.
Cardboard scenes, well that’s something else, but really, get a grip.

PimaDona · 24/05/2020 21:00

Our woods are literally littered with them

Someone’s just posted on our village Facebook page with another FORTY they are putting out tomorrow.

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 24/05/2020 21:01

I was about to say YABVU until I read PimaDona's post.

That's just ridiculous.

I have only ever come across a few where I live so I find them quite sweet. But if it got to that point I would probably hate them too.

Surely the whole point is the pleasure in finding them somewhere unexpected? That's kinda ruined if they are everywhere.

1066vegan · 24/05/2020 21:02

I'm with you.

Painted rocks in front gardens, village greens, patches of urban wasteland etc, half-hidden to make them a challenge to spot are a fun idea.

Putting them on beaches or in woods or fields does nothing to add to natural beauty; they spoil it.

HoppyHop · 24/05/2020 21:02

YABU. and the painted rocks thing was around way before lockdown

Stripeytopgirl · 24/05/2020 21:02

We rarely find them, but when we do my 3yo absolutely loves it. We can’t do much at the moment, when we go on walks she looks for rainbows in the windows & painted rocks on the ground.

Thank GOD for those people! YAB so bloody U. Do you have children?

PimaDona · 24/05/2020 21:02

I’d possibly change my mind if they were fabulous works of art

They’re mostly just scrawled on with some artwork every now and then

Destroyedpeople · 24/05/2020 21:04

Not necessarily @PimaDona...that just sounds really sour.
My daughter and her partner and I got to into it one weekend. Mainly I painted instructions like 'stop' or 'wait' and placed them along the pavement.
It was a laugh cos we were bored.
Daughter did pics for ornaments and her partner did aphorisms and also placed them.outside.
None of us put it on fb.

PimaDona · 24/05/2020 21:04

Don’t get me started on the dickhead who nailed a fairy door into an ancient oak tree and painted windows on the knots of the tree “to cheer up the kiddies”

Tree was nice enough before mate!

terrelontane · 24/05/2020 21:05

I don't mind the rocks, but round here people have been leaving random items and goodie bags to 'cheer up the local kids', which is not a great idea. You never quite know whether it's something to leave or take home or just random rubbish. People have got quite irate over kids taking stuff that should have been left, or sad that they left stuff and no one has taken it...it's become a bit of a minefield.

Figgygal · 24/05/2020 21:05

Please tell me you’re joking!!

ProseccoBubbleFantasies · 24/05/2020 21:06

@DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult I hope not. It might cause screaming

PinkBuffalo · 24/05/2020 21:06

I like them they are pretty Smile
This the first time I ever voted and I had to vote Yabu, sorry!

rosiejaune · 24/05/2020 21:07

Well it depends what the paint is made of, considering ecological issues. When it flakes off, it will get into the soil and water and animals will consume it. Most paint contains oil derivatives, so it is essentially a source of microplastics, which we've produced more than enough of already.

YeahWhatevver · 24/05/2020 21:07

Bet you hate it when passers by smile at you too.

daisypond · 24/05/2020 21:07

I agree. For the time being, they are OK, but fundamentally they’re not - they are spoiling the countryside, garish and graffiti. I’d hope they get removed when lockdown ends. In your own garden, fine.

Honeyroar · 24/05/2020 21:08

I don’t like them either. Especially when all and sundry are pictured all over Facebook gleefully holding them up bare handed. I also live in a village with a stone painting artist that is selling them for charity😏

Destroyedpeople · 24/05/2020 21:10

Well why shouldn't 'all and sundry' be 'gleeful ' about their artwork?

nitgel · 24/05/2020 21:11

I'm with you too op. I'm a monster Grin

PimaDona · 24/05/2020 21:11

“Made this in honour of the NHS”

“LOTS of people have asked if they can buy one” have they tho Hmm

Covers a lot of sins Wink

greasyspooncafe · 24/05/2020 21:11

Anything else you'd like to moan about?
