To feel I've wasted my money on Tassimo?

So we got a Tassimo yesterday...the my way one on offer in Costco. Have read some really good reviews about them but so far we've had the Costa Latte and the Kenco Americano and it tastes like it's come from a vending machine! Not sure what I expected to be honest. I have a 'proper' espresso machine but not using it that much as it's a bit of a faff. We've looked at v expensive ones but decided we wouldn't use it enough to justify the expense and the ones that do their own milk seemed as much faff as the traditional machine.

Did you run it with just water first?

I got one for when I have guests because I only drink black coffee, then I found out it actually makes half decent coffee.

On ebay and amazon you can find packs of various drinks, get one of those and see if you like them.

I can recomend soucharde hot chocolate.

EinsteinaGogo · 24/05/2020 13:10

We felt the same as you, OP.

We got rid of our tassimo after feeling that the coffee results didn't taste special enough.

I found the Kenco Americano really bland.

Gallacia · 24/05/2020 13:10

Mine was "okay" I found the hog chocolates much nicer than the coffee.

We bought an espresso vertuo machine and the quality of coffee is so much better imo

Gallacia · 24/05/2020 13:10

Supposed to say nespresso but my phone autocorrected sorry!

DirtyTicket · 24/05/2020 13:12

I've got one and when it dies I won't be replacing it. The coffee is nothing special and once milk is added it's barely warm. I preferred my old percolator.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 24/05/2020 13:12

I always found that the ones with milk pods tasted weird (its UHT milk, so not surprising I guess). The black coffees vary a lot, but as PP says, you can buy a mixed lot and try some different ones.

In the end I swapped mine out for regular coffee machine, as I couldn't bear the amount of plastic waste I was generating with my one cup a day. I had a huge carrier bag of them ready to take to a recycling place, and then I though, each one of those cost 25-50p - with that money I could justify a really decent bean to cup machine!!

Murinae · 24/05/2020 13:14

Yes the ones with milk in pods don’t taste so good. I prefer the nespresso and make my own hot milk to add

Hairydogmummy · 24/05/2020 13:30

Thanks...not just me then! The milk part of the latte tastes okay mixed with hot choc powder and I could try the espresso with my own milk. Costco only sells massive packs of pods so we've a lot to get through. DH in favour of trying to return it and sell the pods on. Plastic waste is also a worry. I naively thought you could just pop them in your own recycling box at home.

A proper coffee machine with freshly ground beans will always be better.

zscaler · 24/05/2020 13:34

I’m with you OP - I don’t think you get the quality of coffee you really want from those machines, especially given the price. We had a nespresso for ages and it didn’t do it for me at all.

We now have a Delonghi bean to cup machine and it is amazing - the best coffee I’ve ever had, including coffee shop coffee. It was expensive (about £360) but I bought it on a 0% finance deal where I spread payments over a year, so it felt pretty manageable. It is my favourite kitchen appliance, I wouldn’t be without it now! We have perfect lattes every morning and it also does lovely velvety espresso.

EinsteinaGogo · 24/05/2020 13:34

I also found it didn't get hot enough - i would take it back for that reason alone.

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/05/2020 13:35

Costco will refund you for it.

Imo the coffees rubbish anyway.

Worriedaboutthefuture1 · 24/05/2020 13:36

We didn’t like the Tassimo either. I think it was the sterilised milk pods you have to use.
We bought a Nespresso Latissima a couple of years ago and the coffee is very very good. It also has a separate milk foamer

Bagelsandbrie · 24/05/2020 13:39

They’re all shit to be honest - the only coffee machines that make decent coffee are the proper Costa / barista type pressure machine ones that cost a fuck ton of money and take ages to clean. The cheaper ones like Tassimo ones just taste vile.

The best home made coffee I’ve had is literally warming a cup of milk in the microwave for 2 mins, adding 2 spoonfuls of good instant coffee, stirring almost to a whisk and then topping up with hot water and microwaving for another 1.5 mins. Tastes nice and no cleaning hassle afterwards.

And yep I’m generally a total coffee snob.

fuckinghellthisshit · 24/05/2020 13:48

I love coffee and have never had a decent cup out of a machine. Fresh beans ground and made in a proper plumbed in machine is the only way. I have a bean to cup which is almost as good. Honestly, a French Press and hand frothed milk in a pan or the bodum microwavable jug is MUCH nicer than those machines.

Judiwench · 24/05/2020 13:48

Basically it is a vending machine. I don't mind them for black coffee but much prefer nespresso. Bit more faff but worth it.

LellyMcKelly · 24/05/2020 13:56

I prefer a simple cafetière with a couple of spoons of finest Colombian (coffee not cocaine).

VioletCharlotte · 24/05/2020 13:58

I used to have a Tassimo and felt the same as you, it's something to do with the milk I think. I've got a Nespresso now and much prefer it. I heat the milk in a jug in the microwave.

Hairydogmummy · 24/05/2020 14:05

Thanks all. I think it'll have to go back. DH wants to get the Nespresso one that a couple of you mentioned which is about £200 in John Lewis atm. He could just get a basic nespresso for his espressos and anericanos though I reckon? I think we may as well just keep the dualit pressure machine for lattes. I just wanted a quicker and easier alternative. The Tassimo lattes are a waste of calories.

Murinae · 24/05/2020 14:10

I like a latte by doing an expresso in the nespresso machine and then binging some milk in the microwave for two minutes. Tastes good, no faff and the basic nespresso machine is fine for it. I do have the milk frothing thing for the nespresso but can never be bothered to clean it.

Judiwench · 24/05/2020 14:12

I paid £115 for one with milk as a gift. It isnt automatic though. Worth the money, honestly. I've had mine for 6 years and when it breaks I will happily shell out for another.

adagio · 24/05/2020 14:12

Look on nespresso own website they have some good deals sometimes, such as free or cheap machines with ‘subscription’ (buy x amount of coffee per month)
I have nespresso ‘citiz plus milk’ (aerocinno thing to the side) and I love it. Had it about 10 years now. I will immediately replace if it breaks (particularly now I wfh all the time!)

RandomLondoner · 24/05/2020 14:12

Try an Aeropress before trying another machine.

I can make a single mug of filtered coffee in about two minutes. I do have a kettle with markers that enable me to boil just enough water for a cup, making that quick. I dollop as much cold milk as I like on top of the coffee shot, before topping off with hot water, because part my method involves 30 seconds in the microwave to reheat back to the required temperature. During that 30 seconds I can clean the aeropress and put it away.

My sister has a Tassimo, or similar, I find the coffee cold and weak.

RandomLondoner · 24/05/2020 14:16

Aeropress is about £30. Paper filters cost £6 for 350.

From an environmental point of view, in a lifetime, the amount of paper filters you will use is less than the amount of paper in one newspaper. (Or something like that, I read somewhere. It's also possible to buy a third party reusable metal filter, but I don't like that idea, as it's extra cleaning. And I reckon it would make disposing of grounds less convenient.)

MrsAmaro · 24/05/2020 14:17

I make my lattes using my hotel chocolat velvetiser and espresso from a Moka pot. The velevetiser is £99 but if you also like hot chocolates might be worth a go!
