How do we get rid of this government?

They've been pretty poor throughout the Covid crisis.

But the Cummings fiasco is the last straw.

Do we really have to put up with this lot for another five years?

I didn't vote for this government, however:

  1. They were democratically elected. How dare you suggest they should be got rid of because you personally dislike them!
  2. Dominic Cummings is not in the government.
  3. I assume you didn't vote for this government in December. Therefore, you undoubtedly felt they didn't think they were doing a good job before the election and your opinion hasn't changed - what makes you think other people have changed their minds?
  4. Who would you replace them with? Kier Starmer largely agrees with the government's Covid strategy.
  5. The government's Covid strategy is scientist led, Kier Starmer's Covid strategy would be scientist led - it's the same strategy. Anyone whose response isn't scientist led is a danger.
This isn't a political issue, this is a medical and scientific issue.

He's even more of a bumbling idiot than BoJo and can you even begin to imagine Abbott trying to tally up death rates and figures??!!

I didn't vote for this government no.

I don't know who I'd replace them with. Someone on another thread has said they think there'll be an Interim government by the end of next week ...

Is no one else scared for the future of this country under this current government? I've never felt so concerned - to put it mildly.

Dominic Cummings is not in the government.

He is a forceful influence on it.

He is a personal advisor to BoJo, sits in on SAGE meetings and helps create the policies which the government acts on.

But every member of government that has spoken about this so far has fully supported him.

The country not voting Tory would do the trick.

Unless the Conservatives table a motion for an early election (and win) or Labour tables a motion of no confidence (and wins), then the next election will be in 4 and a half years time.

I also have no idea why people are banging on about Corbyn when he hasn't been Leader of the Opposition for some months now...

So if Labour tabled a motion of no confidence - the whole of parliament and government would then have to vote on this.

And they'd need a majority to win.

There'd be no chance of them getting a majority would there?

But there's nothing we can do

What underpinned things in the past was that our leaders were supposed to be responsible and have a sense of duty etc

If they fucked up generally the direction r was they would resign and a lot of the time that happened

What trump showed was if you just lie and say fuck you, there's nothing anyone can actually do

The behaviour of this government has been appalling. But this rewriting of history, what the rules were etc to protect one man is a different level of appalling. I'm genuinely shocked. But, nothing anyone can do.

How did we get here?

Gosh people love to throw in the Corbyn gripe don't they! Yes I wish we could get rid of the government immediately! I can't believe they were only elected less than 6 months ago and have already cocked it up so massively! They are self-serving, patronising and only care about holding onto power and deflecting any negative press. I still can't get over Hancocks lie about reaching the 100k target by posting out tests! God help us!

Not quite, @pontypridd.

First the motion of no confidence has to pass. If the motion of no confidence passes successfully, then a 14 day window to form a govt which the house has confidence in begins. There are four possible outcomes.

If they cannot form a new govt, the incumbent govt can schedule a vote of confidence and try to pass that within the 14 day window. If they win, they carry on as before.

If within the 14 day window they cannot form a new govt that has the support of the house, and they can't win a vote of confidence, an election is triggered.

If a new govt is formed, they still have to pass a vote of confidence. If they win, then then govern. If they don't, then an election is triggered.

There could be a vote of no confidence.

I've just looked it up (I know very little about politics).

Might this happen? And there could be enough votes to make this happen.

@pontypridd votes of no confidence have successfully been brought before and an election triggered, but it's a difficult process and I'm not sure the house has the appetite for it in the current climate. I may be wrong, but I think if Labour tried for that now they'd be jumping the gun.

Yes, I think Rory Stewart put a finger on it in the leadership campaign - he said there's now a lack of shame in politics. Those Ministers coming out in support of Cummings today were corralled into and doing the bare minimum with the party line - obviously the party line as they all used the same formulation. Until they can't get away with the shamelessness, we will have this kind of awful politics. And that's partly down to us to hold their feet to the fire.

Is it likely that a vote of no confidence might be tabled over something like this?

I care about who replaces our current government - but am not sure we could do worse than this ... we need this lot to go, that's for certain.
