How do we get rid of this government?

They've been pretty poor throughout the Covid crisis.

But the Cummings fiasco is the last straw.

Do we really have to put up with this lot for another five years?

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 24/05/2020 00:19

The Conservative government have a big majority and in order to force an election a huge number of them would have to vote to no confidence themselves.
We are stuck with this lot until 2024 unless they choose otherwise.

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 24/05/2020 00:21

The biggest recession in history will have massive political consequences. If you can find an historical precedent that leads to anything other than a lurch to the right I'd be interested to see it!

Opendraw · 24/05/2020 00:21

Ha @BoingBoingyBoing that would not be hard at the moment lol I think my 5 year old could make them look like fannies

pontypridd · 24/05/2020 00:21

Oh dear BestBeforeDate ...

I was worried that would be the case.

Chickens - how do we hold the fire to their feet (apart from in a GE)?

OP posts:
Lockheart · 24/05/2020 00:22

@pontypridd I don't know if it's likely but I would guess not.

Even if a motion were brought, I wouldn't rate its chances of ultimate success highly.

Like I said, I think Labour would be jumping the gun if they tried to dissolve parliament via a vote of no confidence at the moment.

Bluewavescrashing · 24/05/2020 00:24

They are not following the science re: schools opening.

They should have imposed lockdown 2 weeks earlier.

Ppe fiasco.

Closing borders to the masses in February, imposing 14 day quarantine THEN and keeping cases low would have spared thousands of lives.

Cancelling big events eg Cheltenham races would also have helped.

Nightingale hospitals looked great but had no facilities for treating heart and kidney complications and were also lacked the staff. Poor planning that could be seen early on.

How anyone can say they are doing a good job in this crisis is laughable.

wherearemychickens · 24/05/2020 00:24

Well I've emailed my MP this evening; then I was still grumpy, so I forwarded on my email - copying in my MP again - to Boris Johnson and a Co-Chair of the Conservative Party. What they get in their inboxes does matter.

LesleysChestnutBob · 24/05/2020 00:26

Labour couldn't provide a credible opposition, and they were made out to be more popular than they were on social media by crowing lefties who assumed everyone felt the same way they did. The landslide begged to differ.

And given the huge number of Tory MPs they're not exactly likely to lose a vote of no confidence

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 24/05/2020 00:26

It is the case :( and it is going to get worse. They have (actual) Brexit coming down the road rapidly and that will be another 'thing' to handle. If it was just watching them squirm it would be funny but the likely effects on real people, especially vulnerable people, makes it very unfunny.

ShinyFootball · 24/05/2020 00:30

Brexit will happen and we will crash out.

Which is what they always wanted.

Now it will happen in the middle of s massive global recession.

Things are looking bad tbh

Reversiblesequinsforadults · 24/05/2020 00:37

Goaty, after ww2 there was a surge to the left and we built the NHS and the welfare system. The people voted against Churchill and voted for radical left policies that looked after the people. This was despite massive national debt that we only paid off in the 2000s. We'll see.

However, there won't be a vote of no confidence in the government. Cummings will probably resign in the next day or two but weasel his way back in before the end of the summer to a slightly different job. Johnson's popularity will dip a bit, but he'll bluster and ruffle his hair and show off his new baby and people will fall for it again. They will freeze public sector pay and stop clapping, shit on immigrants and refugees and continue to fund the climate crisis.

I'm not surprised at the shitshow. It's totally expected. I knew they were a bunch of lying incompetents. I was more depressed on the 14th December. However, I continue to fight without any expectation.

Duck90 · 24/05/2020 00:39

She's a woman in a position of power who is making the UK government look like a bunch of fannies.

That annoys a significant % of this site.

This

Disquieted1 · 24/05/2020 00:40

People talking seriously about a no confidence vote when the government has a majority of about 80!
Complete cloud cuckoo land.

I think that Keir Starmer is credible and could pose a threat in 2024, but till then you can do the square root of fuck all.

SudokuBook · 24/05/2020 00:43

They are appalling, but, people kept telling us they knew what they voted for, so we have to all just suck it up.

ssd · 24/05/2020 00:44

The only thing keeping me going is the hope for independence.

We need to get away from England. Sorry.

AuntyRigsby · 24/05/2020 00:46

Anyone who supported Corbyn as leader of Labour should hang their head in shame as much as anyone who voted for Johnson. An unelectable opposition leads inevitably to the sort of shit show we about to embark upon.

Mulhollandmagoo · 24/05/2020 00:47

As you say, a vote of no confidence would be the best way, but there's pretty much no hope of one getting anywhere, there was a vote of no confidence in Theresa May and it was just a massive waste of time, which isn't something parliament should be entertaining right now and any credible opposition will know that

Don't be too sure (in the unlikely event of a NC) they wouldn't get a majority of though, I do think Keir Starmer has the best shot out of anyone at rallying a majority, I really like him and would love to see him as our next PM

pontypridd · 24/05/2020 00:48

This is another question altogether -

But why is the government wanting a no deal Brexit when we are already heading for a recession or more likely a depression?

Surely the government is worried about this.

I don't know much about politics, but know enough to have felt extremely worried when Boris/the Tories got in again in December. I knew what to expect. None of this is a surprise, unfortunately.

My understanding then was that a no deal Brexit was good for many of the Tories because it would make them richer in some way. They didn't care about the impact it would have on the UK as they'd come out more than fine.

But now ... is this still the same? Everything has changed hasn't it?

Are they really wanting to make a dreadful situation even worse? Why won't they think of waiting a bit before going ahead with Brexit?

OP posts:
Mulhollandmagoo · 24/05/2020 00:49

Also, could someone fill me in on why people aren't keen on Nicola Sturgeon? I don't really pay much attention to Scottish politics, but from what I've seen of her during the pandemic nice been really impressed, am I missing something?

I'm not being obtuse either I'm genuinely interested in other people's views on her?

AuntyRigsby · 24/05/2020 00:49

a vote of no confidence would be the best way

What are you talking about? This is about as plausible as the Queen dismissing Johnson and appointing her butler to run the country!

ssd · 24/05/2020 00:50

What will posters here do when they've finally stopped blaming Corbyn for everything the tories have done over the last few years??

Mulhollandmagoo · 24/05/2020 00:51

I'm probably being optimistic, but I don't think we'll end up with a no deal Brexit, because I think the EU will fight to stop it as a no deal will impact on them too so it's not something they want. I'm not sure though I could be very wrong

Lockheart · 24/05/2020 00:52

@Disquieted1 I have only answered the OPs question about how a government can be removed. If you read my posts you'll see I don't think it's a feasible option at the moment and would be unlikely to succeed.

ssd · 24/05/2020 00:55

There's a lot of resentment on mn of Scottish people, a lot of people think we have too much money and get free uni places and free prescriptions as we are just spoiled, not understanding we get that as our government spend the money given to us on free uni and prescriptions and Westminster don't spend their money on these things.

Scotland is a much more socialist country. We voted overwhelmingly against brexit and this Conservative government, but we are still lumbered with both. Until we get independence, which will come, we just have to be patient.

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 24/05/2020 00:56

Are they really wanting to make a dreadful situation even worse? Why won't they think of waiting a bit before going ahead with Brexit?

To be fair it really won't make a lot of difference. Have you seen the projections? We've just propelled ourselves over the precipice of the worst economic disaster in modern history. In the well-worn metaphor brexit has been relegated from the Titanic itself to the deckchairs.
