To think it really doesn't matter what the rules are now?

No-one's going to follow them.

I am a real rule follower. I've done everything by the book since day one and despite all the hysteria about people breaking rules, so has almost everyone I know.

But when the man who effectively runs the country and wrote the rules makes it clear they don't matter I feel like something of a mug for having been so "good".

I haven't seen my parents or been anywhere outside my town in weeks but he was fine with travelling all that distance with symptoms to see his.

AIBU to think whatever the next/current phase rules are it will be very difficult to get the public to comply?

@EdwinaMay - are you suggesting what he did was ok to prevent his child possibly being taken into care? Millions of people will be in the same position - who will care for their DC if they go into hospital. It doesn’t make what he did ok.

And even so what if he was living in a separate building? His reason for going doesn’t make sense given his elderly parents would have needed contact with his DS If he and DW has been hospitalised.

The guy is an arrogant self seeking maniac who will stop at nothing to promote his agenda. Look up the definition of a sociopath - we’ve got one working our PM from the back.

If there is one positive to come out of this, it will be that BJ has been completely exposed as out of his depth and totally unable to lead the country. Even if you put ethics and party politics aside, I am shocked at just how shit BJ has shown himself to be in a time of crisis. The covid fiasco makes it look like Brexit was handled well!!

I really don't care what Dominic Cummings does.

I'm being sensible and sticking to the rules because it's safer for me and my family. I'm not going to suddenly abandon that because Boris's psychopath mate decided to do something stupid.

HandsOffMyRights · 23/05/2020 10:33

I can only find a Mirror link, but the Govt confirmed on 30 April that Cummings was "self isolating"

They would not confirm where he was working.

They knew.

@Ultrasoft completely agree with your post...Its one rule for the masses and none for those in charge-do what you want, when you like and hope to hell you dont get caught as has been evidenced by the many inept entitled pollies en-route to second homes/visiting family 100s of miles away/booty calls. The fat oaf Boris& his lackeys need to practice what they preach.

HandsOffMyRights · 23/05/2020 10:35

30 March...

Aridane · 23/05/2020 10:44

It's up to the individual if they want to risk their families health or not.

No, it really isn’t it

CoronaMoaner · 23/05/2020 10:49

He needs to resign

merrymouse · 23/05/2020 10:50

I'm being sensible and sticking to the rules because it's safer for me and my family.

It's not always that straightforward though. For many the rules have been very difficult to follow because they or family members need additional help. As littlecorner points out above, some people have been really struggling, but they have been following the rules because they have been told that it is necessary.

Now we learn that there was another set of secret rules that you could follow if you are a Dominic Cummings.

lazylinguist · 23/05/2020 10:51

Like many 'important people', he thinks the rules are for the masses, not for him.

Aridane · 23/05/2020 10:52

He needs to go and I expect he will

bobbiester · 23/05/2020 10:54

It's up to the individual if they want to risk their families health or not.

Not when laws have been passed to make what he did an offence.

Roussette · 23/05/2020 10:55

But in risking their families health, they are risking others too. That's the problem.

No one can tell me that Cummings did not stop for petrol or a loo break for his 4 year old. A 4 year old can't go into a service station loo on his own so Cummings was endangering others.

For instance, one of my DDs may/may not have had Covid. She lives on her own. She was desperate to come home to Mum and Dad, but given her borough in London was one of the worst for cases, she knew she couldn't come back to us, a place with low rates and her Dad being 70. She got better, luckily didn't need hospital and she following the regulations.

Cummings seems to care not a jot about his parents if he is willing to drive hundreds of miles with his wife both having Covid symptoms. And his child could've been asymptomatic and if they were looking after him, all this would've been passed on let alone the birthday party for his Mum

Peregrina · 23/05/2020 10:56

I am not sure that he will go. Scottish Health Minister breaks the rules and resigns. Govt.'s Scientific adviser's mistress breaks the rules by visiting him and he resigns. Govt. Minister Jenrick breaks the rules, and makes excuses. Dominic Cummings - I very much doubt that he will resign. It's just possible that Johnson will throw him under the bus since his behaviour could damage Johnson himself.

SabrinaThwaite · 23/05/2020 11:02

Cummings actions and No 10’s denials give the British public the perfect excuse to say fuck lockdown, the R number picks up, Cummings gets his herd immunity plan reactivated, and the Government gets to blame the public for ignoring lockdown ...

Roussette · 23/05/2020 11:07

Statement by No.10 supporting him.

We're fucked.

If that can happen, anything can happen.

Roussette · 23/05/2020 11:08

Anyone suffering from COVID symptoms was told NOT TO TRAVEL.

How the hell BoJo can justify this, I do not know.

Peregrina · 23/05/2020 11:15

I presume if the pressure is kept up then Johnson will have to throw him under the bus. Remember that Johnson's main aim is staying as Prime Minister.

fascinated · 23/05/2020 11:16

Remember Prince Charles travelled with symptoms too.

fascinated · 23/05/2020 11:19

I’m surprised that people are surprised.

This country is run by an elite and to hell with anyone who isn’t part of it.

Roussette · 23/05/2020 11:19

I presume if the pressure is kept up then Johnson will have to throw him under the bus. Remember that Johnson's main aim is staying as Prime Minister

Nope. As I said... No.10 have issued a statement supporting him

Prince Charles went to one of his many houses to isolate if I remember correctly. He didn't travel up through the country with a wife who had symptoms, and a 4 year old son to two 70 something individuals, probably stopping on the way for toilet breaks

user1487194234 · 23/05/2020 11:20

TBF Nicola Sturgeon tried to protect the CMO for a day

dogsdinnerlady · 23/05/2020 11:23

Surely the people who make the rules have to be like Caesar's wife and beyond reproach? It is not just 'his business'.

SabrinaThwaite · 23/05/2020 11:25

The irony of “smash the elite” Cummings behaving like ... the elite.

Alsohuman · 23/05/2020 11:26

Remember Prince Charles travelled with symptoms too

Remember Prince Charles isn’t a government policy maker and didn’t travel to endanger his elderly parents.

fascinated · 23/05/2020 11:29

If the rules were don’t travel with symptoms, and don’t go to second homes, then Prince Charles broke both rules. No consequences for him though.

The elite look after their own.
