to think Dominic Cummings has to go?

RoosterPie · 22/05/2020 20:39

Dominic Cummings apparently travelled to his parents house while meant to be self isolating due to covid symptoms.

Given what happened with Neil Ferguson and Catherine Calderwood, AIBU to think his position ought to be untenable?

People do seem to have lost the capacity to be sensible

Because we have repeatedly been told we’re not allowed to be sensible.

If I had my 2 friends over and we sat in my garden, more than 2m apart the sensible part of me says there is no more risk in that than sitting in a park with hundreds of strangers which is allowed.

However my friends aren’t allowed over. So they don’t come.

derxa · 24/05/2020 12:16

No, it’s not just sat in a car. They drove 4-5 hours with coronavirus with a 4 year old. They would have stopped off for toilet breaks, food, petrol etc. Were you there? It's perfectly possible to drive from London to Durham without getting diesel. I drive 7 hours without needing to buy diesel. The child could have worn a pull up. They could have had a pee behind a bush. They could have brought food and drink with them. They could have driven overnight. DC should go but I find all this snitching and nit picking very wearing. Off course he should be sacked but I'm weary.

FliesandPies · 24/05/2020 12:17

I just think the way some people have gone about this has not made sense and has been cruel..

Yes, exactly - Dominic Cummings. Cruel and contemptuous of all the sacrifices made by others and lacking any common sense or sense of decency. Bastard.

Shortsally · 24/05/2020 12:17

Flies

The whole point of breaking transmission and not buying ice creams is that covid can either lie dormant for 2 weeks or can present with no symptoms.

So the person serving could have covid and not know. The person before you buying, hands over change, the sever takes that money, possibly covered in covid, the same gloved hand then gives and prepares your ice cream.. But no one looks ill.. It would take one sick person and one ice cream van with no proper ppe and methods in place to spread covid to loads of other people.

SharonasCorona · 24/05/2020 12:17

@Shortsally but DC was also out and about on 19 April in Durham with his wife on her birthday (sorry I saw a pic of Durham Castle and thought it had a castle!).

Helmetbymidnight · 24/05/2020 12:18

People are replying with that level of detail because others are arguing that DC kept to regulations.

He didn't.

YeOldeTrout · 24/05/2020 12:19

As long as you stay in the car then it's fine to go to your 2nd home during Lockdown Or another type of separated accommodation(?). Like self-catering cottage? Or is it only allowed if someone in your family is symptomatic? Gee, why didn't they tell us this before?

MIL lost a few £££ due to a holiday cottage she couldn't go to in April -- she deserves compensation, don't you think?

SharonasCorona · 24/05/2020 12:19

@derxa then he would have said that they didn’t get out of the car. He didn’t say this. Instead Downing St attacked Guardian and Mirror and said they would not respond to allegations from ‘campaign newspapers’. Hardly inspires confidence.

Livingtothefull · 24/05/2020 12:20

Please write to your MP and sign petition; make sure your anger is registered, It isn't enough just to post on here. Here is my message to my MP (not a Tory) - feel free to adapt to your own circs and use:

I am appalled by the actions of Dominic Cummings in travelling during lockdown, putting untold numbers of people at risk.

I am even more disgusted by the way the Cabinet are rallying round him. It is shocking to me that the Prime Minister and our elected politicians are defending this aide, who despite being at the heart of Government has quite clearly broken the rules of the lockdown; the Government's own rules, set up to protect everyone.

This is something I take personally. I have been working from home since March whilst caring for my severely disabled DS at the same time. This has put me under severe strain, but it has never occurred to me to break the lockdown rules by getting carers. My DH is a key worker, and goes into work every day thereby putting himself at risk to help secure the safety of others.

And we are not alone; there are so many other people who are coping heroically with real hardship as a result of obeying the lockdown, and have done so willingly in order to ensure that nobody is exposed to unnecessary risk.

Some Cabinet members have attempted to defend Mr Cummings by stating that his actions were somehow justified by the fact that he was merely caring for his family; for example, Matt Hancock (the Health Secretary no less) claimed that 'it was entirely right for Dom Cummings to find childcare for his toddler'. This insults us all, especially those of us who have struggled with caring for dependents whilst obeying the rules; it implies that we care about our family members less.

This fundamentally and fatally undermines the integrity of the Government. It makes nonsense of the message that we are all in this together and all making sacrifices to keep each other safe. Although I did not vote for them, I was prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they would act in good faith. However I am now truly ashamed of the way our country is being governed.

FliesandPies · 24/05/2020 12:21

@Shortsally you've got a nerve to lecture me about CV in that patronising way while defending what Cummings did Angry

SharonasCorona · 24/05/2020 12:21

DC should go but I find all this snitching and nit picking very wearing. Off course he should be sacked but I'm weary.

Maybe there is ‘nit-picking’ because they’re refuting what the police said and also Downing St attacked Guardian and Mirror and said they would not respond to allegations from ‘campaign newspapers’?

Shortsally · 24/05/2020 12:21

Jas

If he broke the law that needs to be tested and appropriate fines issued.

I don't think that should include job loss.

It's different from chief medical officer going to a second home for fun.
Or the science guy breaking household rules and having intimate relations with his married lover...

Dc uncle died with covid... They wanted a safe base hopefully without stopping the car at a services!

BovvyDazz · 24/05/2020 12:24

Derxa - do you really think DC is the kind of man to make his 4 yo wear pull ups to protect a random member of the British public? I don’t.

itsgettingweird · 24/05/2020 12:24

But clav he didn't just on with working online. He was really sick for 10 days. He lay sweating whilst his wife watched his breathing as she was scared. His child was called upon to feed him Ribena from a spoon.
Oh yes, that's the child they took 260 miles with covid to be cared for if they became really ill but then stayed in their house with them when apparently he was really ill. His wife said so. She published this off her own back. But the again she also said they were in London at the time. Confused
I get you are Dominic Cummings scrambling to find a supporter somewhere an avid supporter of the Tory party. And fair play to you for standing up against 100's to fight for what you believe in.
But the facts remain. They don't change to suit an argument.

Someone up thread that we need more stories of people who struggled in lockdown because it wasn't made clear the rules only applied if we felt we could and should adhere to them

I think whet we need is people who have been fined for breaking it to come forward. What where they doing? They they think they were putting their family first doing it? Do they believe it was a matter of safeguarding (remembering we can make out definition of what this means under lockdown).

Then we need to ask Cruella - the attorney general - who has defended Cummings if she will rescind all these fines and have them refunded immediately because there actually wasn't, at any point, a law that said you must absolutely follow the guidance as written and it was personal judgement.

Helmetbymidnight · 24/05/2020 12:26

fancy his wife, a jounalist writing an article and going on the radio to talk about how much dom suffered- at home- with hos son.

or is that too nit- picky

Shortsally · 24/05/2020 12:27

Flies,

You said '' except the person serving or buying the ice cream didn't have covid ''

This is the whole point and what people miss.
I'm not trying to lecture you at all. I'm sorry if it's come out like that. It's just I'm flummoxed.

We simply don't know who does or doesn't have covid unless they are obviously ill with symptoms because it incubates or someone doesn't show any symptoms and it's for this reason, I wouldn't be buying take away drinks or ice creams.

I'd say that would cause far more risk to people than dc in a car... Caveat.. That didn't stop at services...

Anyway I'm probably projecting my own frustrations at the lack of common sense shown about breaking transmission.

Helmetbymidnight · 24/05/2020 12:28

but if its found he broke deadlock other than one very long drive with no stops Hmm you think he should lose his job- like the others?

Shortsally · 24/05/2020 12:28

It's getting weird

Oh dear was the child really feeding him ribena with a spoon Shock

derxa · 24/05/2020 12:29

and also Downing St attacked Guardian and Mirror and said they would not respond to allegations from ‘campaign newspapers’? They are campaign newspapers just like every newspaper. The guardian is currently wetting its pants with glee. So DC is sacked and BJ steps down. What happens next? Keir Starmer takes over? Is that what MN wants? We're in a mess. What will reduce the mess and save lives? That's what's really important.

Ohmymg · 24/05/2020 12:29

@derxawhat you described has very much been frowned upon in Durham. A couple drove from their town to the coast(8 miles ish down the A19) with a flask of tea to sit and watch the waves. They didn’t leave their car. Durham police turned them around. Told them it wasn’t essential and a needless strain should they have had a car accident and required NHS care.

They did not leave the car, they weren’t showing symptoms. I wasn’t allowed to drive to the beach 4 miles away to walk my dog. I did not have symptoms.

Why the fuck is it ok for him? His wife’s account describes her crafting with their son while they took care of Daddy with Ribena. They weren’t on deaths door. Unlike many who have died, alone and without comfort. Children who, had their parents taken ill would have needed to be cared for by the local authority.

They should have stayed at home. Had either one of them needed hospital care then family could have gone to them.

SharonasCorona · 24/05/2020 12:29

Or the science guy breaking household rules and having intimate relations with his married lover...

So DC says he, wife and son stayed in separate building and family dropped off food. Why did they need to travel 270 miles for food? They could have ordered online or his wife’s brother in London could have been on standby.

SharonasCorona · 24/05/2020 12:31

@derxa

and also Downing St attacked Guardian and Mirror and said they would not respond to allegations from ‘campaign newspapers’? They are campaign newspapers just like every newspaper. The guardian is currently wetting its pants with glee. So DC is sacked and BJ steps down. What happens next? Keir Starmer takes over? Is that what MN wants? We're in a mess. What will reduce the mess and save lives? That's what's really important.

So our leaders get to not respond to press investigators because they disagree with their politics?

DC resigns, BJ gets a new aide. Simple.

derxa · 24/05/2020 12:31

Derxa - do you really think DC is the kind of man to make his 4 yo wear pull ups to protect a random member of the British public? I don’t. Fuck knows

SharonasCorona · 24/05/2020 12:32

*investigations

Shortsally · 24/05/2020 12:34

Well if the child was actually taken to be their carer hands up.

I can't defend that. Confused
