I agree. What do you think?

Aside from virtue signalling from politicians, the clap also seems to have descended into competitive virtue signalling - egged on by both normal and social media.

Hear Hear

amusedbush · 22/05/2020 21:21

I don’t mind the clapping but the damn fireworks and banging on pots needs to stop. My poor dog is a wreck every Thursday, he hides under the bed and paces around the room for hours.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 22/05/2020 21:22

Only one of my neighbours does it. Everyone else just rolls their eyes.

StoneofDestiny · 22/05/2020 21:22

Pay your taxes, stay at home and stop voting fucking Tory. That'll do more for the NHS than a clap 🙄

Agree

Chicchicchicchiclana · 22/05/2020 21:24

I think so too. It was nice while it lasted but things move on.

Aridane · 22/05/2020 21:24

@maleficient53 - we don’t clap for you, we clap, for our key workers. We clap for our bus drivers, our refuse collection people and our delivery drivers. The billboards salute our unsung key workers. We also clap for the NHS

RedHelenB · 22/05/2020 21:26

When we're out of lockdown then it will come to a stop. I dont get why people are getting so uptight about it!

MayFayre · 22/05/2020 21:27

Thank goodness.

iamapixie · 22/05/2020 21:27

You're right. It was a nice gesture but was hijacked both by the government, and by people being really unpleasant to others.

shinyredbus · 22/05/2020 21:27

Should have stopped after the first week.

b0redb0redb0red · 22/05/2020 21:29

It doesn't affect me much either way. However, I know people who make a big deal of clapping for NHS workers while simultaneously claiming that NHS staff are lying about issues with PPE because they're all whinging lefties. Now that I find weird.

redcarbluecar · 22/05/2020 21:30

I think that for some people the pressure to clap (with neighbours noticing who doesn't, etc) has felt oppressive, hence some will be relieved when it goes. A shame for those who've enjoyed it as a neighbourly get together and genuine act of appreciation.

ICouldHaveBeenAContender · 22/05/2020 21:30

PrimroseHillAnnie : "The Guardian is tedious nihilistic diatribe."
Including this article by a consultant who asks for it to stop?

randomer · 22/05/2020 21:31

If some yoga teacher person tells you to jump in a fire would you?

Yes, is evidently the asnswer and slag off those who didn't jump with you.

Littlepond · 22/05/2020 21:33

I like it. I don’t think it’s about the NHS anymore though. I like seeing my neighbours.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 22/05/2020 21:37

Some people are irritated but for many they feel so isolated at the moment a few minutes a week being part of the community is really important to them is think that’s more important

If you don’t like it don’t join in (I don’t always)

I’m nhs never felt it was for me but for those truly on the front line (and those in care homes)

I think it’s over being politicalised now that happened from week two

LillianBland · 22/05/2020 21:41

When we're out of lockdown then it will come to a stop. I dont get why people are getting so uptight about it!

Have you actually read the reasons why, on this thread?

I can think of a few.
For a start, it was supposed to be clapping for the NHS. A nice civilised way to say “thank you and we support you”. It wasn’t supposed to be a way of keeping in touch with neighbours, each ting doors and asking why others aren’t out, making as much noise as you can, by screaming/yelling/cheering, banning pots and pans, blowing whistles, blasting car horns, singing fucking karaoke for an hour, letting off fireworks, and so on.

Young children trying to sleep.
Front line workers are trying to have a sleep after working 12-14 hour shifts.
Confused, elderly people are frightened by the noise.
Parents of those with SNs are having to try to calm their frightened children down.
Animals are petrified of the noise.
The noise can affect those with PTSD.
Many of those screaming and clapping for the NHS are also out breaking every fucking guild line the government has laid down, in order to stop the silly fuckers from catching it in the first place and putting pressure on those same NHS workers. I’m not talking about the odd slip up, I’m talking about out and out breaking of gulidlines. It’s just a pile of virtu signalling wank at this stage.

Of course. if it stops, my next door neighbour will be distraught that she and her family will not be able stand on their doorstep every Thursday, blowing whistles and banging pots. All the while looking at other peoples’ houses and saying how disgusting they are for not supporting the NHS. Mind you, she’ll not be alone, it will depend who’s visiting her that night. It could be any number of people, as her door never fucking stops.

Annnnndd breath.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 22/05/2020 21:42

Oh an anonymous doctor wrote an article about why the clapping should stop that isn’t political at all for The Guardian Hmm

Vargas · 22/05/2020 21:42

Completely agree with @houseplantlover.

maleficent53 · 22/05/2020 21:43

Ok but we have a majority tory government who are responsibly for the destruction of all essential services not just nhs.
People continue to flout the rules just because they can.
Instead of clapping maybe vote in a government committed to raising wages and life expectations of all.

Nanalisa60 · 22/05/2020 21:46

Maybe one more week!! Then as we are starting to come out of lock down we can all stop.

DioneTheDiabolist · 22/05/2020 21:49

Didn't the Italians start it?

Yep. Fucking Roman's with their plumbing and clapping and aqueducts.Grin

trellishead · 22/05/2020 21:52

If we really appreciated health and social care staff then we should stop voting for shitty parties that won't fund those services properly

Agree!

TeensArghhhh · 22/05/2020 21:53

When you see so many NHS nurses and “key workers” flouting the rules - blatantly meeting up with family and friends, yet posting FB statuses for everyone to “Stay Home and stop putting me at risk” the heroism stops. In fact nobody in my area have clapped for 4 weeks.

maleficent53 · 22/05/2020 21:56

True nhs workers are just normal people to be honest like everyone else. Just doing the best they can
