I agree. What do you think?

Aside from virtue signalling from politicians, the clap also seems to have descended into competitive virtue signalling - egged on by both normal and social media.

It's just a bit silly more than anything. The first week it was a great gesture but prolonging it is pretty meaningless. Especially when so many are making no effort at all to follow guidelines (even before the recent lifting of some restrictions).

How can people clap for NHS after pissing and shitting all over beaches and tourists towns all week?

MidsummerMurder · 22/05/2020 21:03

Maybe it could become an anniversary review, where we all look at how the NHS and staff are being treated once a year and check promises are being kept.
Pay rises for front-line workers. Equipment stored to be available when needed rather than months later. That sort of thing.

GabsAlot · 22/05/2020 21:04

should have been a one off in the first place-its meaningless now so boris can come out like hes so grateful and then take from them

madcatladyforever · 22/05/2020 21:06

Us NHS staff will soon be back to having chairs thrown at us again and clearing up drunken vomit. It was nice while it lasted Grin

Wendigogo · 22/05/2020 21:07

You're lucky, its every fucking day in Canada.

greengauges · 22/05/2020 21:07

It's become more of a community support thing round here, particularly for the elderly neighbours who rarely go out. It's a chance for us all to smile and wave to one another. I was a complete cynic when it started, but I like it now.

HeadSpin5 · 22/05/2020 21:08

Every day?! 😱

Clapping is one thing (though agree about the time being shit) but the ridiculous singing, banging, fireworks car horns, bagpipes bollocks is - well, bollocks.

Divoc2020 · 22/05/2020 21:09

Yes, time to stop it. Air horns and fireworks around here - it's lost its meaning.

PrimeroseHillAnnie · 22/05/2020 21:09

The Guardian is tedious nihilistic diatribe.

HappyPunky · 22/05/2020 21:10

@jesusinthecabbagevan actually yeah I'd probably join in with that, it's good to get it all out Grin

TheLashKingOfScotland · 22/05/2020 21:10

I don't understand why people think it's anything to do with Boris. I don't know anyone clapping for him.
We'll probably continue it because it's turned into a time to wave at our neighbours and check everyone is ok.

blancheduboiss · 22/05/2020 21:11

Should have stopped weeks ago when it lost its central meaning. Where the in-laws live, it’s 100% become a virtue-signalling event where they compete to appear to give the most shit. Awful.

FamilyOfAliens · 22/05/2020 21:12

It will gradually die out I think especially when things are a bit more normal and the schools are back etc

I wouldn’t hold your breath for the schools bit.

Aridane · 22/05/2020 21:13

I thought it started with the Italians too, not sure why she’s claiming “credit” for it.

Indeed!

olivehater · 22/05/2020 21:14

I am NHS and wasn’t into it at first but now love coming out as it’s an opportunity to touch base with our lovely neighbours, many of whom are elderly. To me it’s more about community spirit now in these difficult times. My kids stay up late to that night and Love banging their pots and pans. It’s not like they have school to get up for in the morning. My baby sleeps right through the banging!

Cam77 · 22/05/2020 21:14

Time for a 2 minute boo for this disgraceful government. FT today "cautiously" estimates 63,600 British deaths from Covid (not the official 36,000)

3,300 new cases today. Oh, but we have airport quarantine now, just TEN WEEKS after start of the outbreak on this island.

Aridane · 22/05/2020 21:16

I agree

Cam77 · 22/05/2020 21:16

@PrimeroseHillAnnie
Please point me to three "nihilistic" Guardian articles. There is some waffle in there, but no more waffle or diatribe than any other paper. Certainly less than the Telegraph.

BackforGood · 22/05/2020 21:16

Same here @Charlieiscool

But it does make sense for a final date, rather than it just petering out I suppose.

crustycrab · 22/05/2020 21:17

Is it every day in Canada? Wow

BlackSwan · 22/05/2020 21:17

I think you just have to stop waiting for permission and stay inside.

It felt spontaneous and genuine for the first couple of weeks. Now it's just forced virtue signalling. I'm sitting out the next one.

roking · 22/05/2020 21:17

I'm so ready for it to stop too.

My dog is absolutely terrified of it 😔 he shakes so much and his heart races. I've never seen him like this before and the fact he's having to go through it weekly with no where to escape from it is horrible and each week is getting worse not that there are pots and spoons involved

He didn't properly calm down till after 11pm last night

houseplantlover · 22/05/2020 21:18

Pay your taxes, stay at home and stop voting fucking Tory. That'll do more for the NHS than a clap 🙄

redcarbluecar · 22/05/2020 21:19

I think that as a weekly occurrence it has to end at some point. There are other ways to support your community and the NHS.

maleficent53 · 22/05/2020 21:20

As an nhs worker please stop
