...aibu that she's an AWFUL public speaker -
"My message is clear"
"As I said in my statement"
"As I said very clearly in my statement"
And the god awful every other line -
"The fact of the matter is"

I had to turn it off. Her manner was appalling. She kept misunderstanding the question and then starting every sentence with "As I've said before..." .

I wish the dentist question had come up on another day. I hope it comes up again.

And the rudeness about the holiday questions!! Er I think people were asking about what happens to the holidays they've book already Priti... "Now is not the time to be thinking about booking holidays. No holidays. No." I kept thinking if she's this rude and condescending on camera I can only imagine how bad she must be in her own office. Hence the tribunal I guess. Smug, incompetent and mean.

Bi11abong · 22/05/2020 19:48

None of them are answering questions anymore. Pointless watching. So arrogant.

Fallsballs · 22/05/2020 19:51

I thought her speaking was like a ventriloquist dummy.
But main issue was she didn’t answer any questions and repeated herself.

PilatesPeach · 22/05/2020 19:52

Same as Sky's Beth Rigby who drops the g all the time

campion · 22/05/2020 19:53

I expect my ministers to be able to pronounce 'th' and 'g'. It's a pretty low starting point.
Sorry...startin' point.

tulippa · 22/05/2020 19:53

The dropped gs are part of her dialect so need to make fun of them.

She is however an awful public speaker who constantly trips over her words making it quite difficult to follow what she's saying. It's bad that she's so terrible at something that is a major part of her job.

And that's before you even start on the bullying allegations and the fact she gets so arsey when anyone dares to question anything. Everything about her seems to be a cover for incompetence and insecurity.

Also the fact that she is so anti immigration when she is the daughter of immigrants herself really confuses me. Confused

chomalungma · 22/05/2020 19:54

Like with Trump - the media need to ask a simple question - and then ask for a follow up. Otherwise things get sidetracked.

This applies to all of them.

e.g. How many people a day do you think need to be tested to ensure we have a good track and trace system?

MaggieAndHopey · 22/05/2020 19:54

I don't care about Patel dropping her gs, as I'm not a snob who thinks regional accents shouldn't be allowed, and I have no difficult in understanding her speech. I did however find her very snippy in her responses to what seemed like perfectly reasonable questions, for example the one from the Channel 4 journalist.

NoMoreDickheads · 22/05/2020 19:54

I've heard her speak at an antisemitism demo and she was really good.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/05/2020 19:56

I don't care about her 'gs' I do care about her utterly inhumane response to immigration. I also care about her lack of grasp of basic number skills.

chomalungma · 22/05/2020 19:56

She couldn't hide her contempt at that question.

Tellmetruth4 · 22/05/2020 19:56

Sky’s Beth Rigby is also from Essex. It’s extremely common where I’m from (London/Essex border) to drop the ‘n’. I don’t notice it.

PeppermintPasty · 22/05/2020 20:01

I can’t get past her awful, smug face and the dropping of the g all the time. Ignorant revolting Tory.

NaturalBornWoman · 22/05/2020 20:02

She comes from Essex where dropping ‘g’s is very normal. She actually sounds as though she’s putting on her best ‘telephone voice’ but the ‘g’ thing is too ingrained to be able to drop it

Is that what it is? It was so noticeable today and the dropped gs sound so odd with the otherwise affected accent. Surely if you were trying to upgrade to RP you’d sort that out? It really grates.

Lucywilde · 22/05/2020 20:02

I live in Essex and my husband cannot pronounce his th’s property so I’m used to a slight accent. Fair play to her that she was confident when speaking but she was very condescending and also seemed like she was covering herself.

hollieberrie · 22/05/2020 20:03

I'm from North London, lots of us speak like that. Its fine to drop 'g'. It's just a regional thing. I'm actually shocked that people are criticising it. Its fine not to like the woman but dont criticise her accent. Would you suggest that Jess Phillips and Angela Rayner need to change the way they speak too? Confused

Chienloup · 22/05/2020 20:04

She's unpleasant and not to be trusted. But we don't need to pick apart but her accent do we? It's the way she speaks, we are a country of diverse accents. It's neither here nor there.

PeppermintPasty · 22/05/2020 20:04

All my family are from London, all over. Some drop the g, some don’t. I think the difference is that this creep presents herself as some kind of superior being and it jars.

PicsInRed · 22/05/2020 20:07

Also the fact that she is so anti immigration when she is the daughter of immigrants herself really confuses me.

I would imagine that her parents were legal immigrants. Her job is to uphold immigration law, whilst facilitating legal immigration, which seems consistent with her parents' status.

However, I would point out that her parents' status is surely immaterial to her own status, as a completely British person from birth. Right? 🤔

gingganggooleywotsit · 22/05/2020 20:10

I agree there is something hard nosed and unlikable about her, but think it's a bit low to mock her accent. It's good to hear different accents in politics imho

NaturalBornWoman · 22/05/2020 20:13

No I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with regional accents but she doesn’t sound like she has one, quite the opposite in fact, except for missing gs. If she had an estuary accent you wouldn’t hear the missing gs so much.

Suze1621 · 22/05/2020 20:15

Uses a lot of words to say nothing and comes accross as dismissive. Why on earth does she drop the end of her words, so irritating to listen too.

NutellaOnButteryToast · 22/05/2020 20:15

Anyone who voted against equal marriage is an absolute tosser imo, but she has so many other unlikeable qualities too.

She completely lacks compassion, is ice cold and is incredibly smug and self satisfied.

Oh and she's a massive bully too apparently, so top woman! 👍

MrsExpo · 22/05/2020 20:21

Grim on every level. Can’t imagine having to work for her. She needs to go. Has anyone mentioned the “g” dropping ......... ?? ARGH!!!

PerkingFaintly · 22/05/2020 20:23

She doesn't come from Essex!

If WP is to be believed, she grew up in Hertfordshire, did her undergrad degree at Keele (Staffordshire) and a post-grad degree in Essex. Then worked in central London. She didn't get the job as an MP in Essex till 2010 (aged 38).
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Priti_Patel

So I'm not sure what her childhood accent would sounded like, but not Essex.

BTW I don't make a judgement on people's decision to alter their accents towards RP or not. I do it myself sometimes to be more widely comprehensible, but I don't think it's an upgrade as such.

I do judge Patel's choice, because I think it's artificial and intended to sound like "woman of the people".

I could be wrong, of course: maybe it's natural and she can't help it. But...
