Exam board confirmed no pay

I posted about this before... and have just had confirmation from AQA that as an examiner, despite having signed a contract to work this summer, as i have for maybe six or seven years, we are not going to be furloughed. It's not self employment so no help there either.

So that's it. Nothing. Aibu to think this is not fair when so many millions of others are being paid at 80%?

OP posts:

And even if OP did want to go fruit picking, a lot of people are applying and receiving 'thanks but no thanks' emails so clearly not crying out that much

Shadowboy · 24/05/2020 16:39

I work for Edexcel and have done for 14 years - I didn’t know we were getting 20%???
I earned over £7k with them last year and wasn’t expecting a penny this year.!!

@PowerStruggle @HakeFish

Do you honestly think a farm will hire a pregnant women with no fruit picking experience?

Even more so do you think doctors would in anyway advise a women with a history of MC and a still birth to fruit pick? Do you really think that is a safe or wise thing to do in any sense of the word?

Get your heads out your arses. As honestly that shows a complete disregard for the OP and her babies life.

HakeFish · 25/05/2020 00:33

@LittleFoxKit

I'm not saying that fruit picking is appropriate for pregnant women. What I would say is that (seemingly) farms are absolutely crying out for fruit pockets, so it is an option for people who (like examiners) find themselves not getting an income they had expected.

bearfood · 25/05/2020 00:57

OP, I completely understand your point. I'm a team leader for AQA and I was gutted to not mark this year...just a bit annoying that all the other boards seem to be considering their markers except ours. Also, it's nobody's business about your personal circumstances...if you expect that money and rely on it, that's your business. I have a full time teaching job but still rely on that money as I'm used to it.

caringcarer · 25/05/2020 01:48

I thought to be furloughed you had to be on payroll on either Feb 28th or March 12th.

There might be some marking in October if some GCSE and A Level students are not happy with their results and want to sit exams.

caringcarer · 25/05/2020 01:52

I do not examine any more as early retired but I seem to remember clause in contact staying contract only valid if examiner is successful in standardisation of marks excercise. Check your contact.

caringcarer · 25/05/2020 02:05

You could sign up to do supply work for September. I retired almost three years ago and I still get emails from teaching agencies asking if I want work. I don't even know how the agencies got my email in the first place. You might find it difficult though as you have to give two references. They would expect the Headteacher of last two schools you worked at.

caringcarer · 25/05/2020 02:10

Could you buy a cheap cot on eBay and just buy a new mattress?

caringcarer · 25/05/2020 02:15

AQA are often short of a few examiners in my subject at A level. I wonder if next year they will find it even harder to recruit experienced examiners with good examining grades.

caringcarer · 25/05/2020 02:21

@rainbowbaby dreams. If you take your own life then life insurance policy becomes invalidated so don't even think of this. If you are really struggling ATM ring the Samaritans. You can ring day or night. Your son's need you. Lock down can't last much longer. Just hold on.

THEDEACON · 25/05/2020 03:12

@caringcarer it wasn't @RainbowBabyDreams having thoughts of suicide it was @celan who Iwas about to advise the same @celan your insurance would not pay out if you took your life there are many answers to your problems suicide isn't one of them PLEASE seek help phone the Samaritans or speak to friends or family

ScreamingKid · 25/05/2020 03:23

That sucks OP. I'd vote with my feet and only mark for one of the other boards in future.

KittyMcKitty · 05/06/2020 16:11

OP I hope you have been offered something by the board.

I posted up thread about the fact that I invigilate and so had lost my income.

Well - happy story - I’ve been emailed by my school (not an academy) and they are offering To pay invigilators / supply teachers and other staff not eligible for furlough 80% of their projected pay.

This has made a huge difference to my family and has really confirmed my belief that they are a great school.

I hope others have also had lovely surprises Smile
